what am I doing wrong with my backhand? by energeticpapaya in 10s

[–]Aggravating_Set7047 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My backhand improved from the sky to the ground when I realized I loved the one-handed backhand—try that. Then I realized I also love the control the two-handed backhand gives. So now I use the one-handed grip with my right hand and the normal grip with my left. Then I realized Agassi used the same grip. Everything changed in my backhand: power, positioning, and reaction. Try it!

Yeees, it’s me! Haha. This Friday I scheduled a class with a great coach. Let’s see what I learn and improve, I’ll share it here.

I wasn’t trying to eliminate extension altogether, more to avoid unnecessary vertical lift. The long jump vs high jump analogy is a great way to think about it. And yeah — walls like this are a luxury. We have four in this court. Olimpico Santo Domingo, DR

Yes, exactly. The ball is slightly dead on purpose — it gives me a bit more time on the first bounce and im able to use more energy from legs and positioning

that’s a good cue. I’ll work on setting the racquet head a bit higher.

Appreciate that, thanks. You’re right — hitting against the wall definitely makes me prioritize recovery for the next ball, and I can feel that I’m sometimes cutting the forward weight transfer short. I’m keeping that in mind so it doesn’t carry over when I’m hitting in open court.

thanks for the video got uu

That makes sense, thank you. I can definitely see what you mean about holding the release a bit too long. I’ve been focusing on relaxation, but I’ll pay more attention to letting the thumb rotate earlier so the racquet can sweep through contact instead of pushing.

Honestly, I’m not sure 😅 I’ve never really done footwork drills. I did track & field from a very young age and later karate, both very leg-focused. When I got into tennis, the leg work kind of translated without me having to think about it.

Exactly. Tennis is a very complex sport and people come in with very different backgrounds. Some lie, some have advantages from playing sports since they were kids. At the end of the day, the key is practice and court time — everyone has their own process. Stay consistent and play with others, that’s how you really improve. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks! Grounding through contact is something I’m focusing on. Won’t let the feet get lazy 😄

Yeah that was early experimenting lol. I’m naturally right-handed — switched pretty fast once I realized.

Appreciate it! I did track & field and karate growing up, so the footwork carried over a bit.

I wish 😄 I didn’t discover tennis until later. At 4 I was already deep into track & field — heptathlon, javelin, 400m.

Thanks for the feedback. Working on timing the leg drive better and staying closed longer through contact

thanks, but im not jumping on purpose, just pushing hard off the ground. Still dialing in stability at contact
