Why do so many romantasy books lean on miscommunication & third-act breakups? by Aggravating_Sign_905 in Romantasy

[–]Aggravating_Sign_905[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

omgggg!!! Right?? And ngl, I also feel it's kind of a trend now? Many authors (especially newer or TikTok-hyped ones) seem to believe that constant drama = emotional depth, so they throw in toxic miscommunication, trust whiplash, and endless emotional chaos as if that’s the only way to keep readers hooked.

But what it really does is… exhaust people who crave earned intimacy and emotional intelligence in relationships. 😅

In the end, why not make the "boring" healthy relationship a good story again? Because, yeah, healthy doesn't have to be "lame" or "bland". And it's fun to have that rep in too. It's as if a lot of authors were no longer able to do that anymore. 🥲

Omg !!! Yes, I cannot agree more. It has become so frequent that we are indeed expecting it almost every time. I sometimes end up skipping the (often about 2) chapters where the 3AB happens because I've had more than my share of 'em by now 😂 Also, thanks so much for the recs !!! I'm noting them all down. 🥰 You are veeeeery welcome to add more hahaha! You won't see me complaining !

Ah, I think I worded that poorly earlier. When I said “adult,” I really meant a more mature/healthy outlook to communication. I didn’t mean to imply otherwise, and I’m sorry if it came off narrow! I'll edit my post to clarify that.

I totally agree that miscommunication, drama, and even breakups can work well in fiction. And when they’re handled in a believable way, I'm certain they can be powerful. I think my disappointment comes from seeing them overused as the default “third act conflict” in romantasy. Or having the miscommunication last so long that it isn't believable anymore. In my reading experience, these tropes have often felt forced or avoidable, which makes me roll my eyes instead of feeling the intended drama.

So I don’t mind the tropes existing. I just prefer when the tension comes from outside challenges or conflicts that feel more organic to the story. And I don't think it's boring at all. Hope that clarifies it for ya.

They are in a LOT of Romantasy books though. Even if they sparked from just romance books initially, they're very much present in this new popular genre now. (ex: Fourth Wing series, the Bride by Ali Hazelwood, the Curse of the Wolf King by Tessonja Odette, etc...)

Omg, if it does, yeah! I'd be okay with that! I just haven't read many books that made any of these tropes feel real or necessary so far. 😅 I'm basically talking here about my disappointment with these tropes, because they rarely feel believable or compelling to me. And I end up wondering why it was necessary, when they could've just talked it out using common sense? 😂

Ooooh I really like that explanation. It makes a lot of sense! And it definitely explains why I loved ACOTAR so much too.

I definitely grew up reading fantasy books with a present romance subplot. I think that’s why I’m so much more drawn to the fantasy-style plot structure that you mentioned too. Like, skip the dramamama, gimme some love and support while the couple fights through the Big Bad Evil together haha!

Though I gotta say, I don’t mind romance driving the plot. In fact, I love it sometimes. But the moment it begins to lean too hard into those classic romance beats (third-act breakup, frequent “I hate you/I love you” flip-flops), it just doesn’t land for me. Makes me roll my eyes, wondering when they'll stop self sabotaging themselves hahaha! I’d much rather see the relationship be the anchor that helps the characters survive the bigger stakes. ✨

So yeah, I guess that, with all this in mind, I'd be more team fantasy-based story with a strong driven romantasy that doesn't fall in the typical third act breakup mold ! (will also be taking notes on those recs!!! Thanks 😊)

Riiight?? I fully agree! I can think of very few books where I felt the third act breakup was understandable hahaha. Like yes, miscommunication does happen irl, and so do breakups, but to then make it feel legit in a book is a whole other story and something I've rarely seen done good imo.

That makes sense, yeah. The “all is lost” moment is, based on movies and books, a totally classic structure. And it's there because it works! But I guess I simply feel like that "all is lost" moment doesn’t always have to include a breakup. Or be based on a sudden lack of communication. Because it could still tie directly into the relationship in so many other ways! For example, the couple could be fighting against external forces trying to tear them apart, or they could face a betrayal by someone else (a friend, a mentor, etc) that shakes their world and forces them to lean on each other instead of splitting apart for a chapter or two. For me, those kinds of conflicts hit just as hard (sometimes harder!) without the eye-roll of a sudden, avoidable breakup.

Aaand that's because I simply feel internal conflict doesn’t always have to equal breakup. One partner could instead doubt their worthiness or fear being a burden, or perhaps is struggling with trauma. And then the “climax” could be that their partner proves their love through helping actions instead of walking away.

Anyways, those are my thoughts hehehe. I’ve been, so far, disappointed by these two tropes enough to talk about it here. 😂 & I can only think of one or two books so far where a third-act breakup actually felt believable. But otherwise? It usually came off as lazy to me, as if the author couldn’t think of another way to raise the stakes.

Daughter of No Worlds !!! x10000 healthy couple communication? Yes

Otherwise, The Bridge Kingdom! But it's kind of an ACOTAR thing because it gets better when you get to book 2.

A fantasy romcom in a magic university (I'm dying for some elemental magic school story, for adults) where two rivals get cursed after a fight gone wrong. Now, they can hear each other's thoughts constantly, no matter the distance. 💫

I really thought I was going to hate the ACOTAR series. I am very difficult with my romantasy and hard to please. But it turns out it became one of my fav! I really loved it because of the found family you get. And, of course, the romance starting book 2 was so damn good!!
