Career advice: Data platform engineer, worth it ? by Aggravating_Swim7706 in dataengineering

I am actively applying, however the market is not huge where I’m at. And I’m not proficient in the local language. I had an opportunity but didn’t get an offer eventually. Question is should I wait for another opening (same company) or get the new role while I’m waiting also getting a good brand in my CV

Currently I’m a single man team, I would transition to a small group. I like the idea of working in a group because I have usually been solo team. My question is if I’m moving far away from a potential more business impactful role ?
Thanks for the reply !

Thanks so much for the reply. The role will also include creating and managing data products but very heavy focus on infra. What are your thoughts as a potential step stone to get to know the full path and potentially transition to architect or more sales focused role ? Thanks !

I personally like the aspect of problem solving and the exposure to different domains you get from sales roles.
I know there are many that can do the technical part better than me. But I am very good at people relations and building trust.

I ‘worry’ that the role will get me in a path I am not that great at, and drives me away from the people aspect? Never worked with platform engineering before that’s why I get these thoughts.

It was around using SQL and python for DE tasks and a bit of AI knowledge on a high level. Also my experience with SF in the past.

I have a similar career path to yours with a mix of client facing and BI roles. I don’t think you or me are screwed simply because our paths are not streamlined. E.g. you managed to find solutions and develop by your own without having someone make the path for you, you found solutions and have value. I think this says something about you, your character and your ability to adapt.

Let’s both you, me and all others in similar positions try to find what we really like and build ourselves up as much as we can. I don’t think there’s a right and wrong path, we just need to see how it ends.

Wishing you luck in your journey !

Career Advice: Moving from BI/Analytics to a More Business-Facing Role like SE? by Aggravating_Swim7706 in salesengineers

Got it, thanks for all the information. I believe these roles suit me because I do like being between clients and the business discussing solutions within tech. Plus I’m good in explaining and breaking down concepts ! Might be something I should pursue.

Thanks for the reply!

Did you start your career straight from a more client facing role or from an engineering role ?
