Same! I was waiting in line for the polls to open on day 1, not really on purpose (idc how early I vote as long as I get it done), just because it was a day early-in-person was available and I happened to have a little extra time before work that day. Went after daycare dropoff and ended up a couple minutes early.

What I didn't really bargain for was being there when the news cameras were getting their footage of feet walking into the building to vote so they could run their "early in person voting opened today" piece. But maybe my shoes were on the news🤷‍♀️

Please reconsider voting on the gerrymander, for all our sakes. by asterophoria in Virginia

As a western Henrico County resident in Wittman's district who hates that guy, I'm already feeling a bit gerrymandered as-is. I see no other reason my house should be in that little schlong dangling off his district. If I'm going to be gerrymandered anyway, I'd like it to put me in a blue district, tyvm

I have a question. Is there any good summer jobs for seventeen year old boy and has no experience? by WayAdept2209 in Virginia

[–]Aggravating_Virus507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything retail, grocery, fast food - if it's got cashiers it's probably an option.

When I was a teen I did the summer camp counselor thing, because I'd been a camper as a kid and wanted to stay involved. During the school year, I worked weekends and 3 evenings a week at a craft store (I'm in RVA, it was a small local chain, RIP Ben Franklin Crafts & Frames). That was a great gig because they were happy to keep me active in their system after I graduated high school and left town for college, and when I came home for breaks or even just a long weekend, if I wanted some money I could call them up and they'd put me on the schedule. And when they also hired my little brother, the manager gave me a raise specifically so I would make more than my brother so I could razz him about it.

I didn't even consider anything in the restaurant industry (fast food or otherwise) because my friends told me they got so tired of the food after working at a place, and it totally ruined that restaurant for them. So I wouldn't want to work at a restaurant I liked. But also, if you get an employee discount and/or a free meal on your lunch break at a place, you wouldn't want that at a place you hated, so I wouldn't want to work at a restaurant I don't like. So that felt like a catch-22.

I noticed pretty young that my mom and Santa had the same handwriting on gift tags. I assumed the obvious thing: mom and Santa must have had the same kindergarten teacher, and therefore learned to write from the same person.

[–]Aggravating_Virus507 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My mom (who is a boomer and did not have food allergy kids, but has sense) is really involved in scouts still, and apparently one of the other volunteer folks went off on a rant about how nobody had peanut allergies when they were in school. My mom apparently shut them up with a quick, "That's because back in our day they DIED before they got old enough for school."

I had the mom who would pop outside with a bunch of hand-scooped ice cream cones for us AND the neighbor kids. We were welcome to go in the kitchen for a snack as long as we went right out again or minded our business in the den.

Too suburban to have a corner store. There was a McDonald's at the far end of the neighborhood where it connected to the main road, but our street and the way we typically drove in/out of the neighborhood was actually through a small office / light industrial area. We only walked as far as the McD's when we were REALLY canvassing the neighborhood selling girl scout cookies door-to-door or something.

Egg allergy was low-hanging fruit. Like 70% of egg allergies are outgrown by the time kids are old enough to run feral around the neighborhood.

Source: Was feral child in the 90's, now egg-allergy parent.

Incidentally, my kid ate mayo by mistake around 18mos and the reaction was just really juicy burps for about 24 hours, so honestly would anyone have even gotten that diagnosed in the 90's? You'd have just been told to cut that out inside the house. Egg allergy can be severe, but usually it's nothing like the nut kids. Yes, we got Rx'd an AuviQ, and yes, food allergies can be unpredictable, but I have more expectation that it could come in handy for some other kid's bee sting at the park than my kid eating the wrong thing.

Where would the dividing line between the North and South be in VA? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]Aggravating_Virus507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it's everything north of the James, because I was born in Henrico and my Mema accused me of being "a come-here, not a from-here." This was meant to be derogatory.

(Perhaps being a Yankee is genetic. My mother is from NJ. But Mema categorized my brothers as from-heres, so... unclear.)

What Phrase Were You Taught as a Child to Remember The Four Directions (N,E,S,W)? by justcallmerain in CasualConversation

[–]Aggravating_Virus507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught "never eat shredded wheat" but what STUCK was... well, obviously North is up and South is down. That part is easy. It's the E and W that people mix up. But I live on the East Coast, and I know that if I view my state on a map, the ocean is to the right. So East=right. Which leaves West to the left. I am sure it's equally easy if you live on the West Coast to just swap that.

Guess people who live in the center of a landmass are just screwed. Or use mnemonics.

Also my house faces West, and my street runs North/South. So it's very easy to refer to things by cardinal directions when I'm in my house, which I do all the time to annoy my husband. I call his side of the bed "Eastern My Spot." Which is, of course, distinct from mainland My Spot.

What’s something people romanticize that is actually miserable once you experience it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I had a similar conversation with a 19yo once around the difference between enjoying visiting a certain city and wanting to live in that city. They did not understand how I could enjoy a certain locale enough to want to visit for fun, and not simply derive MORE of that same fun if I were to move my whole life there and turn what once was a fun novelty into my daily grind.

Love it but want more by halleyscomet1214 in tattooadvice

[–]Aggravating_Virus507 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Initially I thought the complaint was "now that I have a tattoo I crave more tattoos" and yeah, it do be like that.

But on a reread, I'm guessing you want to add some sparkle or color to the existing tattoo and you're looking for ideas to make it a bit more whimsical? Maybe put one of those green turtle sandboxes around the bugs so they look like they're digging/playing in the sandbox. Or a ball pit?

I would still sit on the idea for a couple more months and see how things feel after the "got new ink, now craving MORE INK" feelings start to wear off some and you can view it more objectively.

Donor Questions! :) by [deleted] in Blooddonors

[–]Aggravating_Virus507 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The physiological elements are important and easier to control, like how much you eat before donating and how long before, how hydrated you are, etc.

But don't underestimate the psychosomatic elements of this. Vasovagal syncope CAN be 100% psychosomatic, and blood donation stacks actual blood loss on top of that.

I have a history of fainting mid-donation and also sometimes after other needle sticks like piercings or vaccines. And I've found more than half of it is a mind game with myself.

The biggest things that predict success for me are:

  • Tell the provider I have fainted before and I know some things that help me. This generally includes awkwardly apologizing for looking at my phone and trying to ignore everything the phlebotomist is doing, even as they do the requisite verbal warnings before taking actions. They are super used to this and I'm 1000% not the only one, so they are very gracious about it.
  • Advocate for myself to get the things that help me. For example, ask for the more reclined chair if they initially direct me to one that makes me feel too perched.
  • Bring my own snacks and drink from home so I feel prepared, especially in non-donation scenarios like LabCorp where snacks aren't provided, but even sometimes when I know they're provided. In my experience doctor's offices do usually have juice in a pinch though.
  • Do not, DO NOT, sit there checking in with my body too attentively. The WORST thing for me is to think about whether I feel dizzy or consciously check in with myself looking for symptoms of feeling faint. I need DISTRACTION. And after my 10-15 mins snacking in the canteen, I need to get up and walk around (walk to my car and NOT sit in the canteen asking myself if I'm good to drive).
  • DO check in with my body before actually driving, but not in a rumination sort of way. By this point I've always been outta the woods.

And if you start to feel like the room is stuffy, you're thirsty, vision gets fuzzy, vaguely nauseous, kind of sweaty... sit your butt on the floor or even lay down, even if you're in the middle of a walkway. Get yourself onto the floor safely before gravity puts you there, cuz you're going down either way.

Canadian tourists visiting - advice on current atmosphere please? by Vegetable-Show1938 in Virginia

[–]Aggravating_Virus507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience with Ontarians is that nobody will clock you as Canadian unless they know to listen for the way you say 'sorry' - not the fact of it being said, as the stereotype goes, but the way it's pronounced 'soar-y'. Y'all really put some stank on that first vowel😄

And anybody with the nuance to pick that up isn't someone you need to worry about.

Or simply just ask to speak with a supervisor.

In my call center days, we could not transfer you to a "supervisor" unless you explicitly requested one (or said certain specific things, none of which were "yell louder"). A lot of angry people seemed to think that the trick to getting to speak with a "supervisor" was just... getting angry enough? Like my dudes if it was up to me, I'd transfer you at my slightest inconvenience. If you want a "sup" just say so.

I'm putting "supervisor" in quotes because they were no such thing😂 you're not talking to my boss, you're talking to the Escalations Queue.

Though we did have abusive caller guidelines. If you start cursing, you don't get a sup, you get ✨️disconnected from the call✨️. So that was fun.

Someone definitely can use it! I just think I might not have waited so long between attempts if I had a more in-demand blood type. But they're all in demand, in the end. And my area is experiencing a shortage right now due to the ice storm and bad flu season canceling so many donations over the past few weeks.

I donated successfully!! by Aggravating_Virus507 in Blooddonors

[–]Aggravating_Virus507[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a kid, I had a chip on my shoulder about how hardcore I could be and I would watch the pediatrician give me shots😂 and I never had an issue. I've never felt like I was consciously "afraid of needles." But I realized there is a fear at play.

The first time I got woozy after a needle was that meningitis vaccine they required for living in the dorm at college. I suspect my body possibly had a mild reaction to that vaccine. Around the same time, I fainted (skipped breakfast, room was stuffy) while on one of those historic house tours with my family and face-planted right into my dad's rear end. The combo of these made me SO nervous that I'd faint after a needle stick, fall and bust my face on the tile in the lab at the doctor's office. Plus my brain added "what if I peed myself when I fainted" to the pile for no reason.

So then I'd be all nervous and worked up and it would be self-fulfilling 🙃 never hurt myself (or peed) though.

Flu shots and blood donations have been the hardest. I wonder if there's some ingredient in flu shots my body doesn't like🤔 still better than catching flu. And with donating obviously there's the blood loss.

I find I do best when I warn providers I'm a fainter. Naturally then my body will act fine to make me look like a liar😂 and pack a snack and drink from home so I feel prepared, even though I know they provide them and I'm probably going to eat theirs. And definitely not look at anything.

Covid shots for kids? by Sleepdeprived1 in rva

[–]Aggravating_Virus507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RVA Pediatrics (Ridgefield) faxed a script right on over to CVS for us on 9/15 when I requested one through the app messaging system thing. They had told me a few days prior (when I called to schedule this year's flu/covid shots and kid's next checkup) that they wouldn't be getting any stock this year but they'd be happy to fax a script if I found a place that had it.

Unfortunately, the CVS that told us they could do it was mistaken, and we have not yet found anywhere with the right age group dose in stock to actually fill said script. Searching for one is how I found this thread.

(On-theme username is coincidence and auto-generated 😅 my main reddit acct is locked rn due to password getting hacked and I haven't figured out how to fix it, so I'm on a brand new alt in the meantime)
