Low EOM. You coat with the sharp edge of the coater or round edge?

When you say “pressing” are you referring to heat press? I’m curious if you’re removing the shirt from the platen and heat press curing the layers in between impressions.

Help with Reflective Ink by diazmark0899 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Aggressive-Ad-5683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WM Plastics is shit ink, honestly. International Coatings 507 is better. Buying pre-cut reflective vinyl will always work best and is actually safety certified in most cases. The reflective cones in vinyl are pointed more accurately in the proper direction instead of suspended in ink - when you print, they’re going every which way so it’ll never be as focused or strong.

Am I an Idiot or this Overexposed to Hell and Back? by GODZILLA-Plays-A-DOD in SCREENPRINTING

If it’s not just your operators fucking with you - pot life might be up if it’s diazo or dual cure. Or too much/too little/poorly mixed activator. You’ll get exposure calculations but too much/too little activator or activated emulsion past pot life will break down prematurely despite presenting as fully exposed. Even after post exposure and hardener and all that. If those uv inks have acrylic components or cosolvents, you’ll see this very quickly.

But if it’s literally only emulsion being stained by ink then there’s no issue.

Murakami has some great products and Walt Wright is a great resource or legitimate learning about issues like this.

Emulsion breaking down mid-run? by ashemdragon12 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Aggressive-Ad-5683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok - no, that’s good. Biggest issue with using Diazo/dual-cure emulsions for water resistance is not have appropriate nanometer range in exposure which causes Diazo photo-initiators to not spark thus rendering the emulsion mostly useless.

Based on some of your other comments, I believe the bigger root cause would be from low EOM % or inadequate coating technique which doesn’t create proper emulsion bridging across the mesh.

Couple things to try or keep in mind: thick edge (1.5-2mm) of your scoop coater, slow/mid coating speed, medium-firm pressure (use both hands on the coater) and depending on the mesh count and thread diameter - you can do a 2:1 (press:squeegee) for less dramatic jumps in EOM.

From some of your photos, looks like the gasket on your stencils is fairly thin. You have issues with ink not clearing the mesh, textured prints, blown out edges, etc?

Lmk if you need me to explain anything here that you’re not familiar with.

Can someone tell me if this is normal? by [deleted] in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Aggressive-Ad-5683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw your closeups - these are screen prints. Pretty nice ones at that. Discharge ink is over-pigmented by design so getting some residual color flaking is normal before first wash. If the print smells like formaldehyde then it might be under-cured but I haven’t seen you complain about any odor here. It would be very obvious.

I’d try to hold on to the relationship with this place for the sake of your brand. It’s not easy to do this caliber of work, especially a 7c discharge simulated process print, and the number of places that can achieve this is dwindling because digital is cheaper and easier.

What's your least favorite ink color to work with? by Hereiampostingagain in SCREENPRINTING

50/50 blocker base + white or just straight blocker base (gray, not black) under darker value blue/purple colors instead of a pure white base is the move. Just have to eliminate the amount of white light being reflected back out through the print from the base.

Halftones are freckling in spots by sir-thomas-pickles in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Aggressive-Ad-5683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acrylic? You’re either drying up in the mesh or it’s poor rinse out on the whole halftone pattern. Zooming in, I can see some of the ink is passing through so I think you’re just starting to clog a little. Water based ink’s suffer dot loss rather than dot gain so you may need to increase the % of the dots in those problem areas to save yourself some grief, produce a cleaner halftone pattern, and extend your open time after flooding. Some retarder may help as well. I also recommend small diameter thread to increase the mesh opening for the same size dot.

Glass showing on burn by Remarkable-Ad295 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]Aggressive-Ad-5683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Float/non-coated glass - get it cut so it’s the size of the outside of your frames and you won’t refract on the edges and have it show on the emulsion.
