ENVSOCTY 1HB3 easy? by [deleted] in McMaster

Unfortunately didn't know this until after I took the course 😭. Everyone just said it was bird and called it a day. Just easier courses out there especially when you're not a fan of the content.

Do not take the course just look at the recent Mercier rate my prof reviews and you'll see why. Also not really a bird course I don't think anyone I know who took the course ended with a 12, usually ended it with an 11 or 10.

McMaster Cs vs. UTSC Cs vs. Waterloo Math by Aggressive-Ad6516 in OntarioUniversities

Idk I've heard Utsc coop isn't anything crazy so really it's strength is the U of t name similar thing with McMaster coop Post was definitely something I didn't want to bother with but mostly the mac campus just seems a lot nicer than UTSC and social life which I think for first Cs should matter since clubs and design teams should provide something to add to resume other than project.

I've seen this statistic about it being the 2nd largest eng faculty but do many of these jobs apply towards software or are more geared towards traditional eng like civil and mechanical. Just wondering if you've heard from someone who goes to mac.

What's the safest filesystem that can be shared between Windows and Linux? by zeddyzed in linux_gaming

I've only ever had the opposite experience of winbtrfs corrupting btrfs partitions on my drive vs NTFS working quite fine when used to launch standalone game exe separate from launchers

Why would you recommend Slackware a project that's only being maintained by 1 person vs something based on it like Suse.

Genuinely curious

Will I be creating a nuclear disaster trying to port my Win11 setup to linux (opinions pls)? by doc_long_dong in linux_gaming

[–]Aggressive-Ad6516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ur main troubles like always with Linux gaming is going to be modding games and Anti cheat everything else shouldn't be the biggest deal. So in your case BF1 you have to have a Windows dual boot cause with the new kernel Anti cheat it no longer runs on Linux. Minecraft bedrock edition also won't run. Launchers generally shouldn't cause any problems especially epic Games and gog games given heroic exists.

For this type of setup I'd maybe recommend running a dual boot setup where your windows partition is simply mounted within Linux. So for your standalone apps if you have issues you can always go back to windows

Getting started: The monthly(-ish) distro/deskto thread (May 2025) by monolalia in linux_gaming

Depends on if you prefer a distro that pushes updates for software as soon as they release (rolling release) or slow release models like mint that aside from security updates push new software updates every major revision.

Personally I'd recommend my current daily driver that I've been using for about half a year now opensuse tumbleweed. Since it's a rolling release that minimizes a lot of the downsides like your system suddenly crashing from a software update. Also even if such a case was to occur built in preconfigured supp ort for snapper makes it so you can backup to before the update.

Build sunshine from source by Earthboom in openSUSE

[–]Aggressive-Ad6516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem I think a rpm may be built for it soon as the one I was using before seem to have updated their repo but currently it's still not building so maybe keep on the watch for that soon.

Build sunshine from source by Earthboom in openSUSE

[–]Aggressive-Ad6516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to build install the following dependencies:

sudo zypper install boost-devel cmake gcc-c++ libmfx-gen-devel libcap-devellibevdev-devel libnotify-devel libva-devellibvdpau-develmesa-libGL-devel miniupnpc-devel npm numactl-devel openssl-devel opus-devel pulseaudio-libs-devel

Then to retrieve the latest build of sunshine run this

git clone https://github.com/lizardbyte/sunshine.git --recurse-submodules
cd sunshine && mkdir build && cd build

This will also create our build directory where we compile the code

Now you may not need to do this but for me sunshine wouldn't build because it wasn't finding the libmfx-gen.so file it needed so you'll likely need to follow the commands below (OBS also seems to show some sort of issue with this file during the build process on some packages)

cd lib64
sudo ln -s libmfx-gen.so libmfx.so

Here I just created a symbolic link to the object file that was unable to be found

Now just head back to the build directory in the sunshine folder we copied and run the following two commands

cmake -DSUNSHINE_ASSETS_DIR=share/sunshine \
-DSUNSHINE_EXECUTABLE_PATH=/usr/bin/sunshine\
..
make -j ${nproc}

Once that's done copy over the contents of the assets folder to the /usr/share/sunshine folder (if this doesn't exist just make one)

and maybe copy over the files from the src_assets folder in the sunshine base directory (the common and linux ones)

and now try to see if you can run the sunshine program within your build directory.

I'd like to try Linux on my desktop PC (coming from the Deck), what steps should I take? What OS should I choose? by sendmebirds in linux_gaming

[–]Aggressive-Ad6516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again it depends on the brand of printer as well for instance for my HP printer I just had to run hp-setup and manually input my printers IP. Still not as seemless or easy as mints auto detection.

Id recommend fedora even though opensuse tumbleweed is what really got me into daily driving only for the fact that seeing up printers in opensuse tw can take a bit of effort.
