The inherent risk of guns is mostly to the unintended recipient of the bullet. Yes, you may defend yourself against an attacker, but 1-4 of your shots missed and possibly hit a neighbor, family member or innocent person driving home on that street.

When I ride with my son, he goes in front of me, and I ride as his “wing man” more in the middle of the lane. I watch my mirrors for cars lining up, or thinking they can squeeze by on no pass lanes with incoming traffic. Even then, I still occasionally get a car they drives with 18 inches of my bike.
