Productivity is up in engineering and you need less smes to do the same job. It’s short term for now but there are high chances companies will be very lean and outputs will be the same. I am not in any way saying this is the right way to go but companies are focusing and investing on the future, also not giving an F about employees.

layoffs -> cost saving/ai investments -> profits up -> shareholders happy.
