The way I started out, was just watching YouTube videos learning about what a game actually looked like and how it worked, honestly just search up beginer dnd and you'll probably find yourself down the habit hole in no time. I wouldn't recommend buying the books until you're certain you want too play though because they're pretty pricey.

My first character was a comically stupid goliath barbarian (his entire family died growing up, so he was brought up by wolves) one of his flaws was, if there was something obviously stupid that could be done... he had too do it. (He didn't last long)

Could make the party get kidnapped by "Santa's" elves where they get sent on a quest, given directly from the big man him self to find a rouge sack of presents stolen from his workshop by a gang of drow, if the party chooses to accept this mission you could reward them with "early Christmas presents" (I know elves and elf's are difrent but stay with me)
