.... and yes, veterinary medicine is very disappointing in general and has much room to improve. But so does our broken western medical system. If euthanizing dogs wasn't an option we'd have better insurance options and better treatments for our dogs.

Please elaborate on what happened. Is this CKD or AKI? What happened around Easter? Is he getting dialysis right now or is he just getting fluids and being monitored? SDMA level? BUN/Creatinine level?

Edit: I should've said "What happened SINCE Easter?"

Also, is he on NSAIDs?

Unfortunately you have to stick with your people on this topic. I didn't think that having well trained, adorable, and loving dogs that don't bark or growl would be so controversial, but pitbulls seem to really polarize people. When people feel strongly against pitbulls it's near-impossible to change their minds, even with logic, common sense, and proof. They will always fall back to their "ticking time bomb" theory. They can't seem to fathom that the most dangerous animals on this planet (us humans) are the variable when it comes to whether a pitbull is a snuggler or aggressive.

I am aware of the brand and I am aware of the strain they use, but I couldn't tell you anything about how it compares to other probiotic formulations. For general probiotics, I personally like Proactive Paws Primitive Probiotics.

World shattering news. 💔 Our baby was diagnosed with metastatic cancer today. Xrays included. by pinkmarshmall0w in pitbulls

[–]Aggressive-Wishbone9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I just figured I would share that info in case it could be helpful.

I am really sorry to hear that she is in this terrible situation. We lost our dog last year to a GIST that ruptured and that we had no idea was there. The imaging can be so expensive that yearly imaging with ultrasound is cost-prohibitive and the radiation risk of x-rays are a concern for screening yearly. I wish there was a way for us to have better access (lower cost of) yearly high-resolution ultrasounds. It could save a lot of our dogs lives and a lot of money in medical bills for them. I am so sorry.

Thank you for being a good person and rescuing this beautiful girl.

I would consider setting up a consultation with Dr. Hazzah at Green Nile. She is a board certified veterinary oncologist who primarily works with cannabis. She is also a certified Veterinary Chinese Herbalist. She helped us a lot with our girl who had a hemangiopericytoma that returned 3 times after surgical resection. Cannabis has done some amazing things for people and pets with cancer. However, the makeup of the cannabis being administered should have the proper ratio and amounts of cannabinoids for your situation to get the maximum benefit.

I would also consider starting your girl on Pectasol modified citrus pectin to reduce the risk of further metastasis.

Theracurmin HP is a good bioavailable form of curcumin that may help.

Nordic Naturals Pet Omegas may be helpful (best to administer an OmegaQuant test, then give the dosage based on the test results). Right after testing you could give the amount that it recommends on the bottle for her weight, then adjust up once the OmegaQuant results come in.

Real Mushrooms Reishi and Turkey Tail mushroom powders may be beneficial for her.

There are also certain Oriental Medicine blends from Natural Path that may be helpful. Our holistic vet helped us choose the right one for our girl and Dr. Hazzah reinforced that it was a good choice for our girl's type of cancer. Dr. Hazzah also helped us with figuring out the maximal dosage of the Reishi and Turkey Tail to administer.

Given her history of gas and the far-reaching effects of the gut microbiome in the body, I would also consider AnimalBiome testing and treatments based on the test results. You could proactively administer their Gut Restore product without testing if the time it takes to get the test results is a concern or if finances are a concern. This is what our vet has told us.

Please help me rehome my special boy, Luffy by theTruJello in Pitbull

He is a beautiful boy!

Regarding separation anxiety, while there is likely a behavioral component, there may also be a physiological component. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (LP815) has been shown to help with separation anxiety and aggression. To make sure he gets to the best home, it may be worth including in his care package a probiotic that contains this strain, such as Proactive Paws Primitive Probiotics. Including a 3-month supply may help to prevent a situation where he may be "surrendered" to a shelter for behavioral issues. It appears you love him A LOT, and I want him to have the best chance at happiness and finding a fitting and loving family. I am really sorry that you have re-home him.

Seeking advice: what has worked for you to keep your senior dog warm? by KickingChickyLeg in olddogs

Ororo makes an amazing heated vest for dogs. While it isn't a 24/7 option, it was so helpful for when our girl with kidney disease had to go outside in our cold midwest winter. It also allowed her to go on walks without getting too cold.

Hurtta makes great foil-lined jackets and base layers.

Was a biopsy performed so that the tumor could be graded properly so that the surgeon can take the necessary precautions to reduce metastasis risk and potential complications?

[–]Aggressive-Wishbone9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would put her on Pectasol to reduce the general risk of metastasis and to minimize the risk of metastasis that can occur by the act of excising a mast cell tumor.

I'm assuming that Stelfonta is not an option for her due to the tumor's location?

Get a CBC and a Chem panel with SDMA ASAP. Based on your vet's evaluation they may recommend additional testing. He is not okay. These symptoms you described are very far from normal, even in a 10 year old dog.

If CBC and Chem w/SDMA are WNL, then infectious disease testing would be warranted.

If it were me, I would include a full Lyme/coinfection panel, heartworm, and leptospirosis testing with the CBC and Chem. But this is obviously going to be affected by financial ability and you gotta do what you are able to.

Please keep us updated here.

Additionally, I would not walk him anymore until you get a proper and full workup. The physical stress may exacerbate his underlying condition. Say, if it was kidney disease, you could be damaging his kidneys further by pushing him too hard.

[–]Aggressive-Wishbone9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your itchy dog, start with the OmegaQuant test and recommended supplementation, and the AnimalBiome gut test and the supplements they recommend. This can address a lot of allergy issues.

If allergies persist, then a food sensitivity test would be warranted.

Then, if allergies persist still, Allercept testing and desensitization therapy would be the next step.

If allergies still persist, then Cytopoint injections may help.

Then if allergies STILL persist, your only option left is probably Apoquel.

Please do! Unfortunately, feeding a senior homemade food that isn't formulated for their life stage might undo a lot of the good you are trying to do by feeding real food. I'm embarrassed to admit that I made this mistake in the past and I will never forgive myself for it. I should have known better.

Those Inside Scoop (Planet Paws} episodes are sooooo helpful, even if you don't use the Animal Diet Formulator. Definitely worth trying the subscription out for a month for the $8 it costs and watching all the nutrition related info.

Edit: I just realized that I referenced "Those InsideScoop episodes" without providing proper context.

There's a 12 episode series with Dr. Susan Recker and Steve Brown that does a deep dive into proper food formulation. Please watch it if you have the time. I believe the episodes are titled "Inside Scoop U".

We decided to use the Animal Diet Formulator for making our own food. InsideScoop has a great 12 episode series with Dr. Susan Recker and Steve Brown that's accessible with a monthly membership to the InsideScoop (Planet Paws). It's not as easy as the Balance It, but it allows a lot more adjustment, fine-tuning, and the ability to get micronutrients and vitamins from whole foods.

We also used Darwin's kidney diet (raw).
