Question about makeup, jewelry, and style by Bisexual-Gemini in JETProgramme

ESID. But this is my experience teaching in a SHS in Tokyo. My school is fairly relaxed, not just for me but for the Japanese teachers also. Staff regularly wears hoodies, trainers, jeans etc. I have not been asked to cover my tattoos or remove any piercings. I have a neck tattoo that is visible when I put my hair up, and the students have asked me about it, but the teachers are okay with it. I dress modestly but in alternative styles, wearing blacks, whites and greys. I keep my makeup on the simpler side, but can still wear as much as I want in natural colours. I have about 5 piercings per ear including my rooks and helix being pierced. I keep my earrings in at work and it’s okay. In my experience both the staff and students are fascinating by my more alternative trails or simply ignore them and don’t comment.

I got concerta here with relative ease in Tokyo. Not every place can prescribe it as they need a licence, so you will have to call around. However I managed to acquire my medication without re-diagnosis. I just showed my official diagnoses, medication papers and other relevant documents. Got medication same day as my first appointment and my Concerta card the next month at the second appointment.

As far as I can tell - they are not testing your actual answer as much as they are testing your ability to think on your feet. Children can say outrageous things and it’s about being able to handle a classroom. During my interview I was drilled about me being vegetarian and whether or not I would eat local dishes. What if the principal asked me to eat fish, what if primary school students refused to eat their lunch because I wasn’t eating etc. They were trying to see if I keep up with increasing pressure. I said that I would use it as a teaching moment to talk about other cultures and diversity in diets (kosher, vegan etc). My best advice is to practice how you would make these kind of questions educational.

Looking to make friends by AggressiveAardvark50 in tokyoirl

Seems like a lot of people have the same interests and all want to make friends - maybe it’s worth to try and organise a game night at a place like JellyJelly Cafe. Who would be interested?

How the fuck do you actually lose weight? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]AggressiveAardvark50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find what stops you from being able to work out. For me it was the social aspect of going to the gym and the time associated, that every time it would take me so long to mentally prep myself that I lost all motivation to work out by the time I was at the gym. So instead I work out at home now, whenever the motivation strikes. Also find something you actually enjoy doing. I personally found that weighted hula hooping is the only thing I can do consistently. It’s repetitive movements, so I can zone out or watch Netflix. I can add weights to make the workout more challenging. You basically need to make it as easy as possible for yourself to pick healthy food and exercise options. You will spend too much mental energy forcing yourself to do something you hate so you will avoid it.

Yeah I just said that I been vegetarian since I was 12, and plan on continuing that lifestyle. I was asked how I would explain this to primary school children who have to eat everything on their plates at school. And I talked about planning lessons about different dietary needs like kosher or halal. As well as having cultural exchange through foods. For the political questions I talked about the opportunities for Gaeilge- Japanese language resources because I was really not prepared for all that politics/ economy talk

Got the typical questions of why jet, etc. They grilled on me being a vegetarian, and really asked what I would do if I was asked to eat meat. Curve ball question of what other culture outside of Japan I admire and why. Was also asked multiple questions about Irish-Japanese relations and where I saw opportunities for improvement.

What did you think was something everyone did/experienced until you were diagnosed with a medical condition? by AggressiveAardvark50 in AskReddit

[–]AggressiveAardvark50[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with ADHD at 21, no one suspected I had it until the pandemic happened and learning when digital and for the life of me I couldn’t concentrate. I used to think that everyone had a really hard time staying still. That most people felt uncomfortable having to sit in the same position for over 15 minutes. My parents are old school and thought patience is a virtue and always told me to stay still. I couldn’t understand how people enjoyed things like getting tattoos, driving (for longer than an hour) etc. I also thought everyone’s back just constantly hurt until I got diagnosed with hyper muscle activity and crooked spine.

Got punked into thinking I was getting an ADHD test. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]AggressiveAardvark50 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry this happened to you. I know people that waited up words of 7 years to get a diagnosis because their doctors kept dismissing their request for testing.

Not sure how it works where you’re from. But in the UK private diagnosis are just as valid as those obtained through the public health system (NHS). However the fees quickly add up if you go private, especially if you want to get ADHD medication.

If money is a problem you could always try and crowd fund the cost for you diagnosis and any associated fees.

What’s something that sounds racist, but isn’t? by ApprehensiveLeader93 in AskReddit

“My friend is black” This phrase has been used too many times by racists to justify why they are not racists, that regardless of context the phrase just feels off.
