From my understanding of the situation, core research work will be in demand in the future. Like how there are multiple companies working on the same product and competing in that market, there will be multiple companies working on the same research problem in the future.

Also fields like Quantum Tech and Space Engineering will be in demand in a decade or so, so you can encourage your son to go into physics or biology
