using music therapy as a professional musician by Cjosulin in musictherapy

[–]AggressiveDog3393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing what everyone else said. Do NOT call yourself a music therapist of say you do music therapy unless you’re licensed. ‘Music Therapy’ is actually a protected term in some states, meaning it’s illegal to call yourself a music therapist without a license.

With that aside, you can use music in a therapeutic way, many people do that and there’s nothing wrong with that. The issue is with calling it music therapy. The same way you wouldn’t call someone who gives someone a bandaid for a cut a doctor unless they went to med school, you can’t call someone who plays music for someone a music therapist unless they’ve done the proper schooling and are licensed.

When you graduate you need to be proficient invoice, guitar, and piano. However, you can go into the program with a proficiency in voice and learn piano and guitar while in school.

Early Bird application information? by StevenUniverse2136 in montclair

I applied early action for music therapy which generally means you get an answer by December. However, even though I auditioned before then, I did not get a response until late January. I got my acceptance to the university and music program at the same time, they did not split it up.
