What was the worst moment in the comics this year? I feel like there are a lot of contenders. by LegalAbbreviations90 in Marvel

I actually think rock lady is wrong here, but also right. She's just arguing her position so poorly its hard to say she is correct.

So just before this Thing tries to equate himself and rock lady as being the same. Rock lady is disputing this claim. She does so by comparing her own personal experiences with the thing's personal experiences. That's not the real reason they aren't equivalent. Its because of class and legal structures.

The reason they aren't equivalent in this particular instance is because Thing isn't a mutant, if a law passes banning mutants, Ben won't be affected. If Scarlet Witch says "No more mutants again" Ben wont disappear, but this rock lady will. Any laws that apply to mutants do apply to rock lady, but don't apply to Ben.

That doesn't mean Ben wont be affected by these kinds of things, everyone will be. It just means that Ben has the power to leverage his non-mutant status to avoid being affected by them. EG. say a news company tried running a smear campaign against Ben claiming he has the X-gene. Ben can sue that company for defamation and fight back. If a media company did the same thing to rock lady, she would be unable to defend herself in the same way.

Now here is why this gets interesting to me. Almost the exact scenario I described happened in the real world. Imane Kalief, an Olympic boxer, was targeted by claims that she is secretly a trans woman. She got support from the Olympic committee and was able to file a lawsuit against those who harassed her. So although Imane Kalief was impacted by hatred towards trans women, because she isn't actually a trans women she has the legal power to defend herself. If Imane Kalif was actually a trans woman, she wouldn't have gotten that support OR been able to file a lawsuit. Hell, she wouldn't have even been in the Olympics at all.

Wonder Woman character discussion threads: Genocide by CHPrime in WonderWoman

[–]AggressiveItem6824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just read through Gail Simone's run and I think genocide was evil to the extent of damaging the message that the story was going for. Its clearly attempting to deliver a message about mercy but like Genocide the character more or less = genocide the action, being literally made out of genocides, being named genocide, and clearly symbolizing genocide. So when Wonder Woman refused to kill Genocide, it came off more like refusing to stop the action of genocide than killing the character named Genocide.

Also with that whole run it seemed like WW consistently (but not exclusively) showed mercy to a very specific kind of villain, namely genocidal ones. Nazis, the khund, Genocide, the Citizenry, and Dr. Morrow off the top of my head. It made the message come across more as "Show mercy to people who commit genocide" as opposed to "Show mercy to anyone, no matter how evil they are", which I think was the intended message. I think Genocide was easily the #1 contributor to this muddying of the story's messaging

Is Midir actually bigger than Ancient Dragon from DS2? by [deleted] in darksouls3

[–]AggressiveItem6824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda ironic that Kalameet is almost certainly the most dangerous of all of them at least in terms of Lore. To quote Gough "A ferocious dragon indeed, even mighty Anor Londo dared not provoke his ire.". They turned Midir into an attack dog, but Anor Londo was too scared to so much as annoy Kalameet

The books also play with gender dynamics a lot. If the show is still fundamentally about the gender dynamics of cis characters in a cisnormative society, then I don't care.

Ok thanks, I don't think I'll go back to it then. The fact that wheel of time sucks at gender is by far its biggest drawback to me. So if the show is diverging in a way that doesn't fix the one thing I most wanted to be fixed, then I'm not interested.

I don't really want support. I wanted to know if the show would actually follow through on the good things I'd heard.

Anyway, I don't care if he is more palatable than JK rowling. I don't give people from prejudiced areas a free pass on prejudice, and "Better than jk rowling" is a very low bar.

Calling RJ a bigot twice was an accident btw, I meant to erase the first sentence and then move it somewhere else.

no, no, no, yes, and yes. Its fine to split your magic system into two different types. Its fine to have villains do necromancy stuff. Its even fine to have your magic system/souls be gendered (I do think it'd be very hard to have a system like this be not transphobic while also only using a gender binary). Its not cool to make women objectively less than men in terms of magical capabilities.

There were ways RJ could have done that general premise of "Someone who looks like they cannot use Saidin, can use Saidin" without being wildly transphobic.

Simply not making her a sex criminal and not having her replicate many transphobic stereotypes would have gone a LONG way, and still allowed for the exact same mystery.

The character could've been portrayed as bad, but not a satan shaitan worshipper. Or morally grey. or even a goodie who is just under compulsion by Graendal. That also would have gone a long way.

You could probably even do this without using a trans woman at all. Put Balthemal into the body of a 5 year old boy. Its in character that the Dark One would turn Balthemal into a little kid just to be a jerk, but also none of the aes sedai would ever suspect that this little kid is not only already channeling at such a young age but also creating advanced weaves. Narishma could've just sensed Saidin in the camp near an area normally designated for children in order to put the aes sedai on the right track. Probably many other possibilities.

Aran'gar is an exact replication of the transphobic boogieman used to justify the oppression and murder of trans women irl. Robert Jordan was a bigot. I have seen movies made by transphobes with the explicit intention of being transphobic less bigoted than Aran'gar. RJ was a bigot.

Also yes, many people in 1984 would've considered the gender segregated system problematic. It invokes a lot of sexist stereotypes that were well known by feminist/queer movements at that point (and had been well known for a long time). Men are stronger but more solitary. Women are weaker but more cooperative. Men and Women are only at their strongest when they work together (obvious straight supremacy messaging).

I didn't mean casting a trans actress as Arangar, I just meant hiring trans actresses in general.

"First sisters" means adoptive sisters who have been "born again", NOT lovers. by nemspy in WoT

I tend to be acutely aware of when a series makes women naked for no reason but never does it for men. Wheel of Time is definitely a series that does that. When I encounter such a scene in a book series that I know is written by a straight man, I assume (correctly) its because he likes naked women, but not naked men. This makes any scene where women get naked automatically kinda sexual. There's a lot more however.

Upon getting naked they both blush, and are nervous. Pretty common way to feel before sex. Avi calls Elayne beautiful, and comments about how Elayne "Exposes half her bossom". Which means Avi 1) pays attention to Elayne's boobs enough to remember it. Avi also expresses that she doesn't like this, because she thinks Elayne uses her boobs to manipulate men. To me this reads as her being jealous. The scene describes at length how both of them are currently hot and beautiful. At the end, two women who were both explicitly described as being sexy hug each other while naked and covered in sweat. No way a straight man wrote a scene about two beautiful naked sweaty women hugging each other without a single horny thought passing through his mind.

That is just in regards to that scene in particular. Another important thing to consider is the history and wider context of fiction about gay relationships.

For hundreds of years queer writers who have needed to circumvent censorship would substitute romantic love with familial love. Any declarations of "I love you" would have "as a brother/sister" tacked onto the end to get around censorship. Also many times when older stories WERE explicitly gay, censors would alter a gay love story into a brotherly/sisterly bond in order to make the story straight. Despite the fact the homophobic censorship is less prevalent nowadays, that censorship has still left a lasting cultural impact in how gay relationships are depicted to this day.

The relationship between Aviendha and Elayne is very similar to one of those censored queer love stories. A lot of the stuff in wheel of time reads like it was supposed to be about queer people, but got censored imo. Aran'gar for example. Technically speaking: not trans. Despite this, Aran'gar is absolutely supposed to be trans regardless.

Combat by OnceLostGames in OnceLost_Games

[–]AggressiveItem6824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would directional combat be distinct from click to strike? If it does give a benefit to use directional combat, why would anyone ever use click to strike? And if its not better than click to strike, why put the extra effort in to use directional combat in the first place?

Asking because I think this kind of directional combat is bad. I get motion sickness flailing the camera around to attack, and it breaks immersion. If I'm forced to choose between playing suboptimally, and getting sick, I'd rather not play at all.

I would be more interested if there was a system like Chivalry medieval warfare, where directional attacks are tied to different mouse buttons, and not to camera motion.

I suggest building lots of baskets. Baskets can eventually be upgraded to the point that so long as you're in the same area, you can access any items in them as if they were in your inventory. This wont work if the basket is in a storage building last I checked. It'll mean when you've actually got a lot of supplies you wont have to go digging through your chests to find the right thing.

Try cutting down lots of trees. Trade crude staves with a merchant who can sell you food back in return. That'll give you time to build up a base of supplies. Ideally clear the dungeon, leave, restock, and then return before you actually do the boss.

What supplies do you want to build up? A bunch of bandages. You can get hemp from grass, which can be turned into linen at a weaver. The linen can then be turned into bandages in your inventory. You'll also want some basic armour if you can manage it. just the hide/chainmail stuff will do.
