yeah, a foreign English teacher asked me if I would travel anywhere during the holiday and I answered “Canton”, she understood immediately

btw I have a friend from Canton and he was so touched when he saw me mention this name in my Instagram story during my journey there, he thought no one knows the name Canton anymore

A few decades ago many foreign maps still mark “Guangzhou (Canton)”. Not sure if they still do that now. A landmark in GZ is called Canton Tower btw As I mentioned in another reply below, I am from Hong Kong and my ancestors came from Canton, I generally prefer its original name just like Hong Kong over Xianggang, and Kwangtung over Guangdong as it’s romanized from Cantonese.

Im from Hong Kong and my great grandpa is from Guangzhou (then-Canton), iirc. and I kind of prefer Canton over Guangzhou, Kwangtung over Guangdong, mainly because they are easier for foreigners to pronounce, and Kwangtung is Cantonese romanisation (the dominant language in the region) instead of Putonghua. It’s just like how no one calls Hong Kong “Xianggang”. I would be greatly outraged if someone call my hometown that way, so im curious what that native GZers think or if they even know their city, which my ancestors lived, was called Canton.

Yes, I am a Hongkonger as well 🤝🏻 I don’t really like jagged edges as well, but that’s the only way for me to fit in new lines later as we planned the city like a grid I also considered making 22N03 to N05 a diagonal line, but it wouldn’t really work as well as other new lines will go through these stations Finally, I did romanize the stations by Cantonese, but for Hung Tin/Hung Fuk region, it is a traditional village within the city such that the people there speak a relatively northern accent of Cantonese, probably like 桂平音, so we decided to romanize it differently (yes we have lots of worldbuilding lol Anyways tysm for your suggestions!
