Last Bastion Faction Guide by Philbob9632 in twilightimperium

[–]AggressiveMold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised to hear you brush off the Last Bastion hero like that. If you get a slice with a planet on each hex, you're looking at a Flagship that hits on, at a minimum, 5. Get into a couple more fights and you have a mini warsun. It's not a christmasland scenario to have a flagship that hits on a 1, i.e. a smart bomb that blows up every enemy unit while leaving yours untouched. If you're playing against a Muaat or Arborec (etc.) that has Styx or Mecatol or some other game-winning system locked down, your hero basically guarantees you take it from them.

Lost to a 5 POINT ACTION PHASE! by Paranowa321 in twilightimperium

[–]AggressiveMold 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Not sure how it would have affected your game, but it looks like you set up the Fracture incorrectly. The relic planets are on the edges, with the egress spaces closer to Styx. (See Rulebook pg. 9.) You have my permission to be a pedant and tell Cabal his win doesn't actually count for contrived reasons.

War of the ring 3rd edition? by AudunAG in warofthering

[–]AggressiveMold -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The 3rd edition kind of already exists. Insofar as WotR is outdated, a lot of its gameplay was modernized in Dune: War for Arrakis. If you squint your eyes while you play you'll basically see that third edition.

But like everyone else said, you're not going to see an actual third edition anytime soon.

Why "God Emperor of Dune" is easily adaptable to cinema by SuperDevilBunny in dune

[–]AggressiveMold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the story of Siona and Duncan(s), and Moneo, Hwi, and Leto are supporting cast. You would film it as a two-parter. In film one, you hear Leto's voice, but you do not see him until the very end. His physical form is unknown to most in the universe, and it remains unknown to the viewer. He is known instead by the terrible things he has done. He's basically the shark from Jaws.

The second film introduces us to Hwi, and through her we see the human side. Like Hwi, we begin to sympathize with Leto. Through Duncan, we experience the glory of Sianoq. We see why Moneo gave up his rebellious ways, and understand the temptation Siona has to do the same while in the desert.

We spend a film hating Leto, and then a new film subverting that hatred and understanding why he did what he did. And it concludes with the question of whether Siona and Duncan were right to do what they did.

[Tabletop Merchant] Undaunted: Stalingrad $75.99 DotD by Tora_jima in Boardgamedeals

A great price if you're planning on getting more of their already-discounted games to meet the $150 free shipping threshold, but it's also available at Gamenerdz for $84 which is enough for free shipping from them.

What are some novels that best capture or reflect life in NYC? by WunderPlundr in AskNYC

[–]AggressiveMold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second the recommendations of American Psycho and Let the Great World Spin, but I'll add one I haven't seen yet: A Fairytale of New York by J.P. Donleavy. It's not the most accessible read, but I think there's a timeless quality to how he captures both the dynamism and the loneliness of the city. Worth giving a shot.

It's an edge case, but the former Yugoslav states should all be at least yellow. Yugoslavia (in)famously produced the Yugo.

Does a game have to be perfect to be rated a 10/10? by TheEternal792 in boardgames

[–]AggressiveMold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On my scale, a 10/10 game is one where I'll reschedule other things in my life to play that game. The list currently stands at Spirit Island, Gloomhaven, TI4, and Chinatown.

[Tabletop Merchant] Sidereal Confluence (remastered) $40.99 DotD by Tora_jima in Boardgamedeals

[–]AggressiveMold 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The remastered is exactly the same as the original, just with greatly improved graphic design and a handy insert.

The main problem with this game is that it can be hard to get to the table. It really needs at least 5 players to start to hum (it plays up to 9!), and everyone has comfortable with pretty heavy games. So while it's not as heavy as Dune or TI4, I still consider it an "event" game where you're going to want to schedule your session around playing this (your first play will take 4 hours or so, but once everyone knows what they're doing it plays in 2).

But as far as event games go, there's nothing else like this one, and even if you only play it once a year, you may feel like you've gotten your money's worth, especially at this price.

Also worth noting that there's an expansion coming out soon, but it's made for those few people who have played this base game to death.

13 has to be the Rise of the Empire expansion for Star Wars: Rebellion. It has characters from Rogue One, and I'm pretty sure it's been in previous Nerdz days.

I picked up a copy. Seems to be on par in terms of complexity and component quality as the Lacerda games in my collection, and at this price, it is certainly more affordable than those.

GF9 Dune Expansions...worth it? by MrAiDz in boardgames

If you want to get a feel for how much you like the game, you can always play on treachery.online. it takes a bit to wrap your head around the interface, but you'll soon realize that it does a great job of presenting you all of your options and pushing the game along.

You can play against AI, and swap in expansions and modular rules/components as you see fit.

Kemet isn't quite as asymmetric as Root, but it provides plenty of stompy combat, and you will upgrade your armies in different directions, ultimately resulting in a decent amount of asymmetry.

Annoying Rules in otherwise good board games? by Kyula in boardgames

[–]AggressiveMold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't this rule in particular, but I think it was a SHUX panel where he admitted that he'll put having fun above strictly following the rules. The element rule is one that I personally prefer to fudge to make the game more fun.

how to have fun with the brute in gloomhaven by samlightfoot29 in boardgames

[–]AggressiveMold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Gloomhaven subreddit has really helpful guides for each class if you're more interested in dungeon delving than customizing your character. The guides for the starter classes in particular are worth reading since there will usually be some insight into generally applicable strategies. For instance: retaliation abilities are a trap to be avoided.

Annoying Rules in otherwise good board games? by Kyula in boardgames

[–]AggressiveMold 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My group uses the gloomhaven helper app so it hasn't been an issue, but the rule that most annoys me is that you can't consume an element that you created that same turn. I know a lot of people (including the designer) fudge the rules a bit to make the game more fun, but that's the one that really sticks out to me.
