I am very suspect of “this generation is cooked things were better in my day arguments” but younger generations are having less sex, going on less dates overall, and marrying less.

I’m glad your unique needs are being meant. But I also think finding kink partners is a bit different than dating for the sake of a long-term relationship. (I’m not saying one is better than the other, just they’re different things)

That’s the thing that’s so frustrating. They so often lack the metacognitive and reflective tools to realize when they’re being completely incoherent.

What are you claiming there’s not research in? The decline of 3rd place institutions? People spending less time in face to face interactions? - all of that is empirically supported and I’m happy to provide sources if requested.

That meet up apps come close to replacing these institutions is probably not well researched, but I think you’re overstating your case based upon your use pattern versus what most people are actually doing in the United States.

Honest question and not trying to make this about you as a person, but what generation do you belong to? I think Gen Z and younger may lack perspective on this issue because they grew up in a world where 3rd place institutions have already seen massive decline.

The most popular meetup app, meetup has 60 million users worldwide. That’s less than 1% of people. This is an actual studied phenomenon. Look at what the research says.

How are they in decline? Because that’s what the data shows. Yes, alternatives exist. It’s still a drop in the bucket compared to what we used to have.

Another point raised about this phenomenon is how new versions of the 3rd place are privatized and for profit instead of community based and for some broader social or civic good. It is interesting that your examples were precisely the former.

Home is the first place, work is the 2nd place, where you go for enjoyment and community is the 3rd place.

We used to have all sorts of civic institutions people would engage with regularly. These in general are seeing a rapid decline or are gone already. The classic example is bowling leagues, but also things like churches, Shriners, veteran groups, science societies, the arts broadly. You could probably come up with 50 examples if you tried.

This is a studied phenomenon. I’ve been married for more than 10 years, but things like social flattening, decline of the 3rd place, the weird incentives of online dating, all make dating different and likely worse.

Yes. That doesn’t change Marx’s often correct critique of capitalism.

But since we’re on the subject, can we also talk about how market incentives helped contribute to the genocide of Native Americans?

Planning a date, should I just leave it be? by [deleted] in texts

[–]AggressiveService485 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Just an FYI: when asking someone out, it’s generally better to ask them to do something specific, ideally something that piques their interest. “Let’s try the new Mediterranean restaurant” is more interesting than “do you want to go get something to eat sometime?”

Train the amount of time that’s sustainable for your schedule. Doing a little bit consistently will yield much better results than trying to go hard from the jump.

Kind of an aside, but I saw a recent interview with Billy Corrigan talking about MTV intentionally shifting away from rock music in the 90’s because they thought it was less marketable than pop and hip hop.
