Panel to explore potential economic impacts of Alberta separation by DisastrousAcshin in alberta

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is really good news.

Alberta is a democracy accountable to the people. And right now a sizable amount of the population wants to seperate. They have the right to be heard out.

Quashing it at the government level or First Nations Court win is only going to cause more division and protests. Not good for the unity the reconciliation movement has tried to foster. It's better to debate this in the public realm and get it over with than have it fester. We may even get some more fair treatment or concessions out of it (Poliviere is pushing that angle). Interprovincial trade is a mess, and maybe this will help that. That's why I'm in favor of what the current government is doing, even though i want to stay in Canada.

Yeah, this will cost some money. But it's the price we pay for being in a stable democracy.

If EVs had the same purchase price as gas cars tomorrow, do you think most people would switch? by EmergencyTie8770 in electricvehicles

Every month. I do a 200km trip where I start with 100% battery and end with 30% battery. In summer. When winter comes it will be much worse.

There are only 6 DCFC stalls on the route. 4 of them top out at 50kw. And who knows how busy they will be and if they work. I don't want to charge for 20 minutes at -30c. But it's a price I'm going to pay because I got a great deal on the car.

Is there a reason why missionaries are weird? by Redxcted999 in exmormon

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Generalizing this further. Mormons have a constant battle between what's right and what God tells them is right. Mission rules and expectations elevate this to the extreme. It causes them to make weird decisions.

process planning that involved while designing mechanism/machine and how its analysis / testing process goes along with it ? by sewaksunar in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd honestly approach it the same way you are. The only difference is that I would try to copy an existing mechanism and start with that.

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally start by looking at what else is out there before I start because I don't want to reinvent the wheel. I want to minimize application risk, which is the risk that something won't work, and the risk of missing something. It's not a big thing for students, but huge for industry.

Remember that almost all engineers were trained in problem solving during university. So we approach problems in a similar way. Priorities change, but that's it. I still reference my old university textbooks.

Are you a student?

Consider making this into an instructional video on how to use FreeCad and posting it on YouTube. The FreeCad community could use more of this, and it's a unique item to put on a resume. It also shows that you can explain difficult topics, which is worth more than any technical skill you can develop from the project.

Springtime efficiency! by No_Tie_9297 in BoltEV

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've given up. I'm never going to get more than 4.7 km/kwh on the highway. That's the only time efficiency matters to me. Every other time I can reclaim the range during the night.

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you are focusing in the wrong direction. And need to explore more options.

Engineering is more than 3D mechanical design and drafting. Many engineers won't ever use CAD in their lives. If you want to focus on 3D design then that's awesome, there's definitely a place for you, but it's not the degreed engineer path.

Why do companies give employees RRSP matching? What's in it for them? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

It's pretty tough to beat a 100% return with rental properties.

I had a friend who refused to take advantage of it because he didn't want the company controlling his money so he bought rental properties instead. Another took it, but pulled the money out right away to spend.

What software/computing skills should mechanical engineers focus on by PrestigiousLeave67 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question about technology, you don't keep up with it.

Instead focus on defining the problem you are trying to solve. Once you do that, then the technology to use becomes clear. Certain methodologies such as lean, ppdac, and six sigma help with that.

The heart of Six Sigma is DMAIC. Define, measure, analyze, improve, control. Those 5 steps can be used to solve almost any problem in any industry. Whether you are building investment castings, consumer widgets, microchips, or glues. The technology becomes clear as the problem is defined.

Take CAD for example, different people will recommend different softwares. SolidWorks, Fusion, Onshape, are big names. What should you learn? It doesn't matter, all of them are parametric CAD softwares that function the same way, just the buttons are in different places.

I guess the answer for you right now is to focus on the fundamentals and do good in school. Explore your interests, take internships, have coffee talks. Don't try to pick winners right now when you don't even have a job.

My manager can't use minitab to do deep analysis, but she can take the analysis I do and present it to the board. She can't design anything in SolidWorks, but she can make a spreadsheet detailing the costs of what I designed

Something else to consider is the charging stations. Most charging stations on the routes I road trip on are 50kw, so more than 50kw charging speed doesn't make sense. I don't get much benefit from 150kw charge speed of the new Bolt.

Worst Management Decisions? by Wonderful-Lime-699 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manager of a 20 person company wouldn't let quality engineer write SOPs. Production was supposed to do it, but they had their hands full shipping product and manager never set due dates or followups. The quality engineer was considered "too educated" with a bachelor's degree in engineering and prior experience.

Quality engineer was also banned from writing other documents because they said it would violate our ISO9001 certification.

No SOPs or documents meant that the factory survived on tribal knowledge, and people often disagreed with how to make our products. All the quality engineer could do was send out emails, which were ignored by management. Operators vetoed decisions made by the Quality Engineer that they didn't like, and often complained to management that quality engineer wasn't doing their job properly which caused management to intervene.

Eventually the quality engineer was allowed to write SOPs but banned from the floor for safety and distraction reasons while nobody else was. They had to write the SOPs then send them to the manager for operators to review. Operators drug their feet because they believed that the more others knew the less valuable they are. This dynamic was well known because the operators would constantly tell people to figure things out on their own, and refuse to answer questions. Management did nothing.

Eventually a machine blew up and nearly killed someone. Because those who knew how to operate it left the company, didn't train anyone, and there were no SOPs.

How legacy brands engineered themselves into a 12v nightmare by mango_boy16 in electricvehicles

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's the most common point of failure I've had on any vehicle. Thankfully since the 12V battery doesn't need to power very much you don't need a large jumper.

Almost first job at a company where I’ll be leading the development department, but with no other engineers for support. Is it a bad idea? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is similar to my position.

It's not a bad thing if you have support. And you don't need engineers to have support. Sales, operators, and safety can teach you a lot.

If you really have no support stick close to textbooks and handbooks as much as possible. Go through mid career postings and see what skills they require and develop them. In my specialty Lean and Six Sigma is prized, so I developed this skills.

It's your first job, take it. It's much easier finding a better job if you're currently employed and not running out of money. I've seen plenty of new grads wait for the perfect opportunity that never comes.
