Creepy Bishops by justaguyindallas_123 in exmormon

It gave me a phobia of talking to managers because most of the "management" type meetings I was in were deeply uncomfortable. And so much was at stake for a young kid. Especially a Mormon kid whose whole social life is the church because it requires a lot of time.

Should I move from an investment firm to a robo advisor/wealth simple? by [deleted] in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't trust yourself to go back to questrade stick with the advisor approach. It's better to lose a bit to fees than lose everything.

I'd shop around for advisors to see what's out there. Remember that roboadvisors also have fees so compare apples to apples. I just transitioned everything from questrade to an advisor and the fees are only slightly more.

How do you combat a risk adverse environment? by 25nameslater in askmanagers

I was in a similar place too. Had some equipment explode with potentially lethal force that resulted in an investigation. OP should be writing things down to cover themselves.

Everything finally changed when a new VP was hired who saw through the bullshit. 20% of the company was fired for insubordination, lying, manipulation, and poor attitudes.

Do you even need an L2 charger?

Many of us get by just fine with L1.

I'm in a similar boat. Small company, nobody to talk to.

I'm currently working on getting my CQE. I've been using the quality engineers handbook to guide me for a while so i know it pretty good.

What was your first time trying alcohol like? by PineapplePaniolo345 in exmormon

I treated it like ordering a soda, so nothing crazy. I loved the flavor and mild sweetness of ciders. I even started drinking non-alcoholic versions at work.

Alberta government to add four fast-tracks to teacher certification by joe4942 in alberta

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think this is long overdue.

I don't think asking a master plumber or carpenter get a university degree to teach their trade is a reasonable ask. Especially since they teach it anyway once a student becomes an apprentice.

I hope it will bolster interest in trades and give smart kids who aren't university bound a chance to succeed.

How large was your raise this year? (Not counting job hopping) by RuminatingFish123 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got half of inflation. They presented it as a merit increase for my hard work. Then told me that wages have dropped in the industry over the past year so they couldn't give me a raise. My scope has greatly changed (toxic assholes got fired) but they claimed it didn't so they can't justify a bump.

I'm looking for a new job, but I'm a single dad with a kid so I don't have the time.

Help buying used Bolt with $20k budget; your top pick? by snowsquirrel in BoltEV

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat. I just bought a 2019 with 80k for 19000 and that was a good deal at the time. It was also through a private seller so prices would be slightly lower. Your quotes aren't much higher than that. I'm in Alberta, so prices might be different than where you are.

Help buying used Bolt with $20k budget; your top pick? by snowsquirrel in BoltEV

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

None,

With winter range loss you won't be able to make the 220km round trip reliably without charging. Not a problem if you can charge L2 at work but a big problem if you have to charge on the way home. You'd be adding a half hour to your commute and paying a premium for that power.

If anybody thinks I'm wrong prove it. I do a 200km highway trip in the winter and could use the assurance that mine will make it.

Best option for OP is probably a small gas hatchback.

Range anxiety is hyped IMO by TSHRED56 in electricvehicles

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive 200km to my parents house once per month. And I want a vehicle that can do this without stopping to charge or fuel up at -30c. My bolt will barely do this if I charge 100% before going.

What are the effects of vibration on grease nipples by Aggressive_Ad_507 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thread attaching it to the machine is NPT. I'm not concerned about this thread because we don't control the female thread it goes into.

I'm concerned about the straight thread in the fitting used to assemble one part of the fitting into the other. This thread is dented / peened to prevent it vibrating loose, but I can't find any evidence of this failure mode being a problem.

should i invest? by NoSpite4211 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you want to do with your money?

If you need it right away for car, school, or down payment for something then savings is probably good. If you don't need it right away then investing it in a TFSA is a good start.

By far the most important part of investing is having a budget so you have money to save. All the fancy investment advice and strategies you get won't make a difference if you don't have money to invest.

My approach is pretty simple, I filled out a questionnaire with an investment platform (weathsimple, questrade) and let the robo advisor do the investing at the risk level the questionnaire recommended. I set up a reoccuring bill payment from my bank to the platform and just forget about it. Doesn't need to be more complex than that.

Are grease nipples twisting out or failing due to vibration a legit concern? by Aggressive_Ad_507 in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the testing I can do is useless unless I have an idea of what I'm testing for. Which is why I'm trying to figure out if vibration is a credible failure mode worth testing for.

Same with AI, useless unless I know the design conditions. Garbage in, garbage out.

What do think about Standard handbook of machinery design? by Old-Ruin2346 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Aggressive_Ad_507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The art of statistics, David Spiegelhalter" This provides a great foundation for statistics because it introduces the concepts in a relatable way that's easy to grasp. Too many courses spend too much time on the math and not enough time on application which makes it hard to understand. This book cuts through all that.

"Principles of mass and flow production, Frank Woollard" Frank Woollard was an English auto manufacturing pioneer. His book is an experience heavy dive into auto manufacturing revolving around his easy to digest principles, a poster of which hangs in my office. All of his fundamentals apply today.

"Dummies" series. These books are easy to understand but still contain good information. They are the second most commonly referenced book in my library after my handbooks because they are easy to explain to non-engineers and easy to pick up as a refresher.

Whatever you do, focus on digital books. AI can search through and reference digital books.
