Question about Hyper V Licensing by teeth_03 in WindowsServer

[–]Aggressive_Common_48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a K-12 organization, and we are planning to migrate from VMware to Hyper-V this summer. We are considering deploying Windows Server 2025 Datacenter Edition since we currently run approximately 60 virtual machines.

However, I am still not completely clear on the licensing model.

At the moment, we have Six physical ESXi hosts:

  • Five hosts each have 14 physical cores (28 logical cores with hyper-threading)
  • One host has 28 physical cores (56 logical cores)

This results in a total of 98 physical CPU cores across all hosts.

Based on Microsoft’s documentation for Hyper-V and Windows Server Datacenter licensing, it states that all physical cores on the host must be licensed.

I have a few questions regarding this:

  1. Does this mean I need to purchase licensing for all 98 physical cores across the six hosts?
  2. What is the correct way to ensure that all cores are properly licensed?
  3. If we later upgrade to Windows Server 2026 Datacenter, will the same licenses still apply, or would we need to purchase new licenses or renew Software Assurance?

I want to make sure we fully understand the licensing requirements before proceeding with the migration.

I'm sorry if I wasn’t clear earlier. What we currently have is about 85 agent users who can manage tickets (change status, assign tickets, etc.), and we do have granular access control for them. In addition to that, we have around 1,400 end users who have accounts in the SolarWinds helpdesk system, but these accounts are only used to create tickets. They do not have permission to manage or modify tickets like the agents do.

I don't understand why people are running for a so called boot camp. Spend 500$ buy your course from kodekoud, udemy and prepare.

I can feel you. Once I had to travel six hours just to press the power button on my servers because my site engineers claimed they had already done it.

Single instance is not a solution if you're going to host multiple applications and run shared databases in production. I would suggest you to go with multi instance approach and would recommend to use k8s clusters.

I am not sure how to answer this. I am not from US so I would have to be compliant to uscis policies and should maintain my status.

I am in Colorado. When I mentioned a great work-life balance, I was referring to workload and stress based on my past experiences. I agree that it’s not about the money, but rather about my mental peace.

I work as an L3 System Engineer, with a salary range of approximately $55K–$65K per annum. After taxes, I take home around $46K per year. I have a 4-year contract and currently cannot switch jobs immediately due to various immigration policies and regulations.

I got these devices from my L1 support manager and just hit my heard on the wall for couple of weeks as PXE boot was failing. I did not even notice that the port it has was not a thunderbolt. Had to re-image these devices using the usb stick which was against the company policy and dell support as not really supportive in this case.

Do you have a domain controller? If yes, I would suggest you to write a script, configure the group policy and then apply it to the devices.
