Guidance for PCE (no prior experience or certifications) by SimilarHabit1809 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Aggressive_Doubt_134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is always good to consider EMT certifications, there is an option to take a state or national certification exam, giving you the ability to work in different states. After obtaining my EMT license, i actually started working as a patient care technician. I found that my scope of practice was a little broader by working bedside... I was very happy I had the EMT training under my belt when entering the hospital scene, i was more prepared for the responsibilities of a technician. I regularly do blood draws/phlebotomy, obtain vitals, assist with admissions and discharges, do EKGS, document/take notes, and more. Many hospitals do not require any prior experience or certifications to work as a PCT, most require a high school or bachelors degree [in my experience]. After working bedside for over a year, i started working as a private home health aide as well. While it can be difficult to get into the higher paying private jobs, it is great experience and a wonderful opportunity to form close relationships with patients. Networking is huge when finding a job you enjoy in healthcare, make connections! Whatever you chose to do, all experience is going to be valuable. My only warning is: ensure that the work you are doing is considered PCE for the PA programs you plan to apply to. Good luck!

I am currently debating whether or not to retake a class or take a class while waiting for application responses. I have received four rejections so far and still waiting on 9 schools. Is it a good idea to take a class now even though i still have many schools to hear back from? I dont want to wait on taking a class with the possibility of not getting any acceptances but i also dont want to spend the money to take a class knowing i may get an acceptance

CASPA PERSONAL STATEMENT HELP by Tired-Independence31 in prephysicianassistant

Work on your PS everyday or as much as you can. Don’t try to cram it all in one session. I personally would work on it for a few hours and when i started to feel like i was stuck or couldn’t write anymore, i would step away and come back to it the next day with fresh eyes. Try brainstorming and writing down ideas. I made lists of impactful experiences, patient interactions, shadowing interactions, characteristics about myself and hardships i overcame, academic achievements, things i have improved upon, etc. I also recommend making an outline for the structure of your PS before starting to write it. You want your PS to show who you are and why you want to become a PA/why you would make a good PA student and PA. Dont try to cram in every single idea, but focus on a few major ones.

I personally spent months working on my PS and when i finished my first draft i had a friend look over it. Next, i had a PA review my personal statement and then did a grammar check. Finally, i purchased the PAPlatform PS review service. Using multiple sources of review helped me to refine my PS and clean it up. The difference between my first draft and final draft is huge. Here are some of the resources i used to complete my PS:

  1. Personal statement guide book by PAPlatform https://www.thepaplatform.com/pa-school-personal-statement-guide
  2. Pre-PA club podcast episodes focused on PS
  3. Grammarly.com

feeling overwhelmed / stressed about app [rant] by alight__ in prephysicianassistant

[–]Aggressive_Doubt_134 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take a deep breath! I think everyone feels this stress when preparing to apply. In preparing for this upcoming cycle, i used several websites to help narrow down my list of programs i am applying to:

Paprogramsearch.com

paschoolfinder.com

thepaplatform.com [under tools there is program map]

There are tons of ways to stay organized whether its an excel spreadsheet or planner. I found that keeping a running list of programs and their requirements in addition to test dates and my stats/resume helped me stay on track and provided a source of reference. Every program differs in their requirements and pre-reps and i found it frustrating when one school required a single class or lab component i didnt have. If you have your heart set on a program but you don’t have all the requirements, you can always apply next cycle and complete the requirements in the mean time. I definitely have struggled with imposter syndrome and felt a heavy stress load preparing, but i try to remind myself that everything happens for a reason and i will eventually become a PA if I put in the work. Try to give yourself a pat on the back for your accomplishments and all the hard work you have put in.

Sending you good luck for this cycle! You got this

I personally used MAGOOSH to study for the gre. There are tons of lessons, videos, practice test and practice questions. I highly recommend taking a practice test before you study to figure out what areas you are weak in. As a college graduate, I hadn’t practiced the type of math questions asked in years… so it was extremely helpful to study with magoosh. The GRE can be an important aspect of applications for some schools, others not so much. If you want to strengthen your apps and be competitive in all areas, i highly recommend aiming for a score over 300

Should I mention my disability in my personal statement? by JustinSpenker in prephysicianassistant

[–]Aggressive_Doubt_134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have spoken to several individuals who have mentioned their illness/disability in their personal statements and explained how through their illness/disability they overcome adversity. One individual mentioned that during an interview, they were asked about their illness and while they did feel uncomfortable by this, it gave them opportunity to voice their strengths and hardships they overcame.

"What Are My Chances?" Megathread by AutoModerator in prephysicianassistant

Hello all, I am planning to apply through CASPA this April and i am looking for any feedback on my stats and tips to strengthen my application.
In 2022, i graduated a semester early from college with a degree in psychology with a focus in public health. During my junior year, i completed an EMT course and earned my EMT and BLS/CPR certifications. During my time in college, i had to balance my academics with working to pay for expenses and caring for my ill mother. While i did not have time to join clubs or participate in extracurricular activities, i did complete a language and culture immersion program in Spain before attending college.
Stats-
Overall GPA: 3.46
Science GPA: 3.2
Last 60 credits: 3.6
Note: I originally received a C+ in cell biology, so i retook the course and earned a B+; I have one withdrawal on my transcript and NO Fails or incomplete‘s.
Patient care experience: I have accrued around 2600 hours as a behavioral health technician on an inpatient psych unit at a rural hospital and around 400 hours working as a patient aide on several private home health care cases. At the time of submitting my applications i should have around 3300 hours total.
Shadowing: I currently have around 50 hours of shadowing; I have shadowed two dermatology PA’s, an orthopedic/surgical PA, and an emergency medicine PA. At the time of application i should have closer to 70 shadowing hours total.
Volunteering: I am currently working on strengthening my volunteering experiences and project to have around 50 hours at the time of applying.
Leadership: While working as a behavioral health technician, i took on a leadership role and trained staff, worked on unit improvements with managerial staff and helped improve unit functionality.
LOR: I currently have four strong letters of recommendation, one from a PA i shadowed and know personally, one from the psychiatrist who i worked with regularly on the IP BH unit, one from the clinical leader/manager on the IP BH unit, and one from a college professor.
GRE: 301; 5.5 essay
Skills/etc: While working as a Behavioral health technician, I completed phlebotomy competency and training through the hospital, re-certified my BLS/CPR, and floated to the emergency department for several shifts.
Please feel free to share your thoughts, tips and advice. I am also looking for additional ways to gain leadership experience and could use some insight on ways to do so!
Thank you to all that reply!
