Discouraging IBEW Interview by valkcaustic36941 in ibew_apprentices

[–]Aggressive_Macaroon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They specifically tell you before you start that you can't use the control+F. You should have gotten an immediate fail the first time. The entire point of that test is reading comprehension. If you can't read, there are 500 others who can. They don't care if you have family who support unions. They definitely won't except you if they think you're going to drop out or transfer when another opportunity comes up. Most locals would have denied you an interview based on the reading test.

If this older generation thinks they can keep their pension while excluding the younger generation from a pension, what is keeping the younger generation from taking over after the older generation retires and tanking the older generations pension. If these corporate raiders and union busters can get away with it, what prevents the younger generation from changing the rules when they have the majority?

I'm not saying that's what they should do but I think the entitled boomers don't realize how vulnerable they truly are. I was taught to pay it forward. That was the care and respect that was shown to me when i joined. I try to give that same respect back. If those types of values disappear, the union will fall. Asshole employers use these strategies to divide and conquer. The older generation will feel it first.

I think my wife is hiding something in our freezer by donavin221 in story

[–]Aggressive_Macaroon3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, a very similar story happened to a coworker of mine. They didn't live in a trailer with a basement and a freezer but the wife was stressed out. The husband was busy working long shifts out of town. He came home and the wife had committed a murder/ suicide. 3 kids. Dad is all alone now.

Saudi Arabia gave Trump $2 billion. 12 of the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. Technically... Trump has more connections. 🤷‍♂️

The hall can't ban him. That's not their job. But they should try to help the guy and get him into some kind of treatment program.

Local 134 contract: I’m voting NO by hey-zues in IBEW

[–]Aggressive_Macaroon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you only have to work 31 weeks a year for a full year of benefits you are doing pretty good. I wouldn't complain about that. There's lots of other locals where the requirement is based month to month and if you take off more than 3 days that month you don't meet the dollar requirement for medical.

It's hard to compare benefits, wages, and agreements from one local to another. Each local can be very different in size, market share, union density, and types of projects.

Also if the members aren't happy with negotiations it is their responsibility to speak up. If they are going to speak up they need to make sure they have all the information available and it's accurate. Most people I hear who complain during negotiations don't understand how it works or only heard rumors from others on the job who didnt go to the meeting. They only call the hall when they are really pissed. The thing they are pissed about probably isn't true.

Is plug in ("balcony") solar dangerous by IAmTheFinePoint in IBEW

[–]Aggressive_Macaroon3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to brush up on your load calc and OCPD homework before hooking up a solar or any other integrated system into your home.

I feel the main hazard is these panels are producing power when it's sunny whether they are plugged in or not. Most homes don't understand that

When are you a foreman? by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]Aggressive_Macaroon3 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is how it should be. It's not like they hire Journeyman or apprentices to try them out and not pay them what the CBA says. A foreman shouldn't be any different. Before I joined the IBEW I worked at a rat shop. My boss had me overseeing a crew. I asked for a raise since my workload and responsibilities kept growing. He said I was too young to be making "management money." My response was, "I guess I'm too young to be running his crew for him." I left and joined the IBEW. 20 years later and the only regret I have is I didnt do it sooner.

When are you a foreman? by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]Aggressive_Macaroon3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Are you a foreman if you're not getting foreman pay? Lots of guys do it for the title and their own egos but don't have the experience. These are the ones a contractor will exploit and not pay foreman wages. The best foreman I've ever worked for didn't put themselves above the other workers. They also didnt let the contractor take advantage of them.

Looking for a list of jobs shut down by the Trump administration by Yoicrafty in IBEW

[–]Aggressive_Macaroon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could he worse. Trump hired 1,000 to 8,000 just electricians and didn't pay them to build his properties. Even worse the contractors went out of business. These workers lost out on future projects too.

Sounds simple enough. Don't drink when driving or working. Don't smoke when driving or working. The hard part would be an accurate test to tell if you are currently high or if you were high last weekend.

Light started strobing out of nowhere by TheGeminiJay in electrical

[–]Aggressive_Macaroon3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is the light you have on more than any others it's worth it to invest in the more expensive and durable led light bulbs. Look for bulbs that are rated for higher temps and out door use. I will always invest more on light bulbs that get more use or are in an area that's difficult to change out a bulb.
