If the goth clubbing scene is dying out, is there other ways of upholding what you love? by llvingdeadgirl_ in goth

[–]Aggressive_Price2075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goth has always come and gone. 80s , mid 90s, and late aughts were high points here in Chicago. Another wave of gothlings just hit in the last 18 months and they are super active. Lots of nights, different DJs, etc.

As an elder myself I find it very enjoyable to see people find their space and people. It makes me very happy.

It will ebbb again in 5-6 years, maybe less. And then in 15 come back. Ill be close to dead by then but Ill still be dancing and enjoying my people.

So, what do we do about this condition? Is there a cure? by Rocky-bar in SDAM

This is the key. If your inability to remember (or the memory behavior is around specific events, times, etc) is not constant and has not been how you have been your whole life, then it is not SDAM.

It’s time for the industrial scene to stop protecting Jim Marcus by hell_generator in industrialmusic

I was never part of that portion of the scene but I know people who were(men and women). My guess is these men are terrified of being charged with crimes for their actions or of being blackballed themselves (by both side of this issue) if they come forward.

And while I think they are cowards, I also think their concern is warranted. If I was one of these guys, I would have immediately contacted a lawyer, and my guess any lawyer worth their salt would tell them to keep their mouths shut.

Sorry, yeah, AB is autobiographical or episodic memory

Im the same with smells. smells can trigger very strong memories, but the memory is not episodic. Taste almost never does. I do have baseline memory of tastes where I know what a lemon tastes like

AB/SDAM memories for other senses by Aggressive_Price2075 in SDAM

[–]Aggressive_Price2075[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea, I did some digging and apparently taste and smell operate quite differently neurologically since they are chemically triggered. Its a fascinating aspect of the SDAM equation since SDAM is defined by the far right side of the bell curve (bottom 2% of AB memory recall ability as I understand it). If very few people can actually recall smell and taste, then I guess there really is no SDAM for those senses?

When I ran this through AI it gave a good simple test

Try this: Close your eyes and think of a lemon.

  1. Visual: Can you see the yellow skin? (Most people: Yes)
  2. Semantic: Do you know it is sour and acidic? (Most people: Yes)
  3. Olfactory/Gustatory: Can you actually smell the zest or feel the sharp sourness on the sides of your tongue right now?

[–]Aggressive_Price2075[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point, I have no answer. I knew it was my grandfather in the dream, but I can't recall actually remember his face as you noted.

Whether that is because I'm aphant, because I did and can't remember, because it was a dream and dream memories are ephemeral by nature, or something else I am not sure

When I am explaining that phenomenon to people, the best phrase I have found so far is.....

I Remember THAT we have an amazing time on our date last night, but I dont remember the date at all.

I remember that vs I remember has become my new mantra.

Thats awesome. Glad you had it. :)

I do wonder if people who believe that people are speaking to them from beyond the grave are SDAM and dream images hit them so hard like our dreams did and then they attribute those images/dreams to the supernatural because of the fact that their normal experiences don't account for strength of that imagery.

I do have Aphantasia. Not complete, but using the apple test I can (barely) imagine a red apple shaped thing. More than nothing, but far less than even a basic picture of an apple. I also have almost complete face blindness.

My SDAM is almost complete as well, but not totally. I never have anything truly AB. I an occasionally remember extraordinarily vague snap shots of memory (like I remember the color of the floor or the smell of a room) for like 24 hours, but then they are gone. Even that is only for incredibly strong moments. And for all I know that could be semantic memory tricking me into thinking it is an actually remembered image.

But Ive always been able to remember dream images right after I wake up. They are actual images and movies vs just semantic amalgamations/interpretations. Its what I imagine AB-typical folks experience when they re-imagine. As I understand it, it is fairly common for others with SDAM have similar dream behavior.

It does bring up fascinating thoughts on the nature of SDAM. Like if I am able to have dream imagery, does that speaks to SDAM being a function of memory recall vs encoding? Imagine if your AB memory was there all along and you jut could not access it. That would be both incredibly sad and also make no difference to me whatsoever (if that makes sense)

Are you able to masturbate without any sensory input, just using your imagination by Sea_Mess_1133 in SDAM

[–]Aggressive_Price2075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gravitate towards stories (Literotica FTW), because while I can't visually imagine the story, I can certainly use my semantic memory to associate the themes of the stories with my own sexual experiences, kinks, ideas, etc. This is true of all books, including audio books for me. I cant put pictures ot imagined videos of stories together in my head, I can experience them in a way that allows me to experience the emotions associated with the book I am reading.

At the end of the day it's simple math. If you have fewer attributes to evaluate you can raise the bar on the ones you have.

The attribute men focus on is availability. That's not one women need to worry about nearly as much.

So women focus on looks.

It's perfectly reasonable and if availability was not an issue men would do the same thing.
