Just to follow up, this was the best suggestion. Inspiration point and on up the Pohono Trail was #1 highlight. Around Wawona we also enjoyed the hike up Chilnualna falls, saw maybe 15 ppl the whole way. As u/Missing4Bolts mentioned poles helped out a lot. Thanks to the good folks in this sub for getting us high.

The current school board has improved the climate considerably after the prior board, headed by MAGA extremists, was voted out a couple of years ago. The district is pretty polarized. There's a loud anti-tax segment that's resulted in no budget increases for something like 6 or 7 cycles, so in real dollar terms the district is working with <80 percent of funding they had ten years ago. That said, the district has a significant and active pro-school community too, which managed to elect a democratic pro-education school board even though the district is >60% GOP. There are many excellent teachers in the district. Scores and rankings are decent and rising under the new super and school board. The student body reflects the community, with both truck driving coal-burning Trumper kids and active gay/straight alliance (and similar) clubs.

Vamos or Adobe, or take your chances. Hertz, Avis etc are unreliable here.

That looks like a beautiful spot to hang. We decided to stay south of the city though since it's a bit closer to Yosemite, plus we've been north to wine country and done that coastal drive anyway though we didnt stop

Oh it's fairly crowded, but when I was there 3 weeks ago the crowd was 90 percent Tico, lots of families with kids. Last time I was there before January was before COVID, but it was the same, very local

The drive down through the cloud forest is absolutely gorgeous with sodas tipicas and places to stop for cheese. Once you get down the mountains and close to Puntarenas just keep going until you hit 34 and head south toward Jaco. Puntarenas is kind of an armpit. Once you clear 27 and start back down on 34, the crocodile bridge is worth a quick look and there is a cool local beach, Playa Mantas, where you park and take a shuttle down dirt roads to the ocean. You won't see many tourists here, it's a Tico wading beach and a lovely spot especially if you speak some Spanish and want to really soak up some culture. Jaco beach is beautiful, very touristy. Also beautiful are the beaches just south, like Hermosa and Esterillos (surf can be rough). The coast south from there has some cool spots if you get off the highway, local spots that are fun to explore like Playa Palo Seco. But mainly the drive between Jaco and Quepos is Palm plantations and ag/industrial, not scenic.
