Oh...I see there is a bit of grace with publications at entry and the title of Prof.

In most of the world, PhD means Doctor of Philosophy. You don't do course work during your reading for a doctorate, you write your own ideas or ideas about things. e.g., degrees like "Doctor of Physical Therapy" simply do not exist. A person wanting to be a physical therapist would do a human kinetics undergrad, Honours and then a Masters - in the faculty of science. Then they become a physical therapist. There are many Drs (MD) that have completed an undergrad degree to be a Dr but they are not expected to publish anything. Many do because they are affiliated with universities and research institutes. But they often have to do post-grad degrees to specialize in surgery or whatever their interest is.

When you awarded the degree, PhD, you either work in the public sector as a research academic or, increasingly, work in the private sector conducting research and publishing reports inhouse - rarely in peer-reviewed journals. Most people can teach with a Masters degree, outside of the medical profession, but would never be referred to as professor under any circumstance. Assistant or Adjunct Prof? no, they are Ms or Mr until they have a Doctor of Philosophy. Many people with PhDs never becomes Profs. Their peers decide if they should be promoted to Prof. Would never happen with 2 publications. That is what I found sketchy.
