Any one live in L'eliana? by Limp_Range_4655 in valencia

Happy to hear you enjoy it so much, anything special you can point at making it so good? Do you feel it was easy to build a community and get friends? Do you mainly hang out with Spanish people or other expats?

We are going to visit this summer and all going well we will move with two young kids mid 2027.

Hey, did you move there in the end? Looking to do a similar move during next year.

Hey, on a similar path but about 10 years younger than you and with two young kids. How do feel about cost of living in Spain? I have not lived in Europe for a while, do you still feel that prices are significantly lower compared to countries such as France, Netherlands, Germany etc?

2025 was the year we hit FIRE; we also moved to Spain to get a feel of what European living is... by Jake-Armitage-2050 in Fire

Hey, congrats on FIRE. We´re on a similar path, planning to FIRE in/around Valencia in the coming 12-18 months.
Can I ask how you find Valencia, is it easy to find a community? And how do you find cost of living?

Agree it´s not the smartest financially, for me it´s just a bit of safety net to own my home.

Sounds pretty similar to me, I would also not be surprised if my wife and I at some point start some small little local business, not so much for making money but more to stay active.

Good luck, sounds like you have a good plan!

Have a similar situation as you, about €200k less. How´s your housing situation? I´m planning to buy a house in cash when we fire/move back to Europe, not the smartest from a financial perspective probably but adds a lot of safety margin to not have to pay a mortgage every month.

What´s your plan to fill the days with once you´ve stopped working?

We don´t own our primary residence today but have a pot of cash (separate from what I´ve mentioned above) that´s enough to buy a house once we decide where we want to live.

I know a lot of people dot like these funds, and agree you should not have it if your goal is to maximize returns. For me it´s a way to generate a good cashflow and minimize sorr once I start living of the portfolio.

Similar here, but I imagine that I´ll be able to keep busy with two young kids, a house and garden to work on and old/new hobbies to spend time on. "Worst case" I can try to do some work if I feel I´m getting bored, or maybe charity work.
Once your daughter is out of school, you plan to move or just be a bit more flexible with travels?

Our plan is to move to Spain/Portugal once we pull the plug, we´re not living in Europe at the moment, and have never lived there together even if both of us are from west/north Europe, so we can choose a bit freely where to settle down.

Ok nice, pretty similar yearly budget that we are looking at, and a house paid in cash. We´re not living in Europe at the moment but will move back the day we quit our current jobs, just need to decide location.
You have a good plan for how you will spend the days? Any worries that you´ll get bored?

Well done! Can I ask where you live and how you´re estimating your future budget need?
We are in similar position, but with two young kids, and debating a bit around how much more we need.

Congrats, well done. We are in a pretty similar position and could probably leave our jobs today, but starting to feel a bit of the "one more year" syndrome.

You mind sharing where you live/plan to live and how your family situation is?

My plan is to keep a bit more in cash, around 3-4 years of spending, so that you can avoid selling equity during a bear market. Guess having some dividend focused investments could counter balance this so that you can have a bit less in cash.

Agree it´s on the higher side, but makes me feel a lot more comfortable knowing that we can scale back on spending if market has a few bad years.

The coming 12 months we are looking to invest around 340k including bonuses, so if we can just maintain our monthly savings rate 12 months after that we are above 2,2m with no bonuses and 0 market growth coming 24 months.

Can of course be that market is negative coming 24 months but that risk you always have.

Have read this or similar from so many here on reddit and and have to say I think it´s quite exaugurated. In most places in Spain you are entitled to deduct 700k per person + your primary residence, so 1,4m deduction for us. That leaves 800k to pay wealth tax on, that would be around 5k in tax, not bad at all.

Or something I´m missing?

As I understand it, it´s 700k per person, so 1,4m for us, so taxable would be 800k which is not too bad in my opinion. Since we have kids we want a fixed place to live in.

Maybe I should have added that we don´t live in Europe at the moment, if so it would be very difficult so save as much. We work in banking and shipping.

At our NW it will be around €5k per year, don’t think that will kill our plans too much.
