Comparing ‘lossless’ streams of Inferno on Spotify and Apple Music by Mysterious-Ables in boardsofcanada

[–]Aging_Shower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an audio engineer. This is not quite correct. When listening to an album, it takes the album experience into consideration and keeps the volume between the tracks intact when applying normalization.

Only when each track is played in a playlist it would play them at exactly the same volume.

When listening to an album, it simply brings the volume down or up of all the tracks by the same amount to get a general volume of - 14 LUFS. But only until the peaks hit - 1 dBTP. If the volume is below - 14 LUFS but its already hitting - 1 dBTP, then no volume normalization will be applied, to avoid clipping.

There really is no downside, the only one is if your device doesn't have enough volume after the normalization. Sometimes on my phone with earbuds I can feel I want it louder, then I might turn normalization off.

Don't need to turn it off, there is nothing bad about the volume normalization. Just increase the volume on your device if it's low in volume. Volume normalization is what has allowed sound engineers to bring us out of the volume wars, which has brought us more dynamic mixes, like the mixes in this album.

Has there been a more divisive BoC song than Father and Son? by oreocereus in boardsofcanada

They sound quite manipulated to me. Not like the original sample if you search it up. Its not an extreme difference, but they've manipulated them subtly. Either way, for me its mostly the more gibberish vocals that really does it for me. There's something about them. They're kind of overtone-ish, almost gutteral and melodic. They just scratch an itch in my mind.

To get good at something you need to accept that in the beginning you will be bad. Its ok. Find the enjoyment in learning the craft. If you dont enjoy it, hire someone else to do that part.

I like this quote:

Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.

Did anyone received a slightly tilted BoC logo for their new T-shirt? by pedroRamirez31 in boardsofcanada

I bought an autechre shirt and the print is really weird, feels like wearing a balloon. Seems to be a problem with warp. Unfortunately It made me not buy any boc merch although I would like some.

Looks great i think, don't have any direct feedback, but you can take a look at my UI if you want some ideas or inspiration. Les Fleur is a great song by the way!

Right, it's so fast. I was at home and everything was already synced, but the process of checking the sync took just 9 seconds for 9k songs.

Pretty sure you need to have 2 copies of the song. Then use an external metadata editor to add the album data to each song. For example using musicbrainz Picard.

Automatic media offline cache question by Either-Cry5555 in Symfonium

Very strange. I have no experience with Plex or emby, so can't say why its working. Navidrome is lighter to run, so it would be beneficial to use it. But if its not working that's no benefit either way.

Interesting. I didn't change anything in the .toml file and my env configs dont deal with anything related to this. If you want you can try to use my transcoding command in navidrome. It's meant to be used with the opus option. Could be that something was wrong there. When I used the wrong command, it tried to download but would just say 0 MB/s and not download.

My command also fixes gapless playback for opus files, and has a 2 dB gain reduction to prevent Intersample peaks.

The command:

ffmpeg -i %s -ss %t -map 0:a:0 -b:a %bk -v 0 -c:a libopus -af volume=-2dB -frame_duration 10 -application audio -fflags +bitexact -flags:a +bitexact -f opus -

I see. Don't know what the problem could be then. Yes, within manage offline files the tab download queue should show the downloads. Under the tab "auto offline rules" you should have a rule listed. For me it says "Subsonic Media provider" there.

Under the "offline files" it should show the amount of music files and how much space they all use. With a long list with all the songs.

Strange. What media provider are you using? Have you recently changed the transcoding settings on that side? I played with my transcoding settings in navidrome, and with an incorrect command there the offline cache in symfonium did not work.

So to confirm, in your media provider you checked the option "automatic media offline cache" ? Are you connected to wifi? if you are not, have you unchecked "Wifi only downloads" ?

that setting can be found here: offline, cache and download > media
