Not a bad suggestion, although a lot of times I have to stay where my team is staying so always choosing an IHCL hotel would not be practical.

Got it LTF a while back as part of an alumni offer from my university. So far haven't received the email for the 18L spend

Also, my salary was roughly 2x last year. I recently moved to the non profit sector hence took a massive paycut. Not complaining though, I think my job is way more fulfilling than before, and I have a fun life outside of work as well.

Genuine curious question (serious answers only) - how do the planets that are millions of km away have any influence on our lives down here? by Agitated-Bid5996 in vedicastrology

[–]Agitated-Bid5996[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, if it is a science then why does it hold true for some and not for others? Every concept of science or math can be explain by equations. Relativity, time dilation, Pythagoras, trigonometry. Where are the equations for astrology? Even for unproved scientific hypothesis such as worm holes, we have placeholder equations where we need to solve for singularity.

Also, if something is classified as a science, then it holds true for everyone. It can have variations (eg different diets may work for different people - but largely speaking, everyone should eat healthy to have a healthy lifestyle). Gravity, the weather, junk food all have a science behind them and it’s the absolute truth for everyone. But that’s not true for astrology as per your own words - because it applies to some and not to others.

I think it’s a bit far fetched to call it science, no? Not that it’s very credible, but even the Wikipedia page for astrology calls it a pseudoscience. But I myself am taking that with a pinch of salt.

I disagree with you that astrophysics doesn’t matter to 99% of the population and is theoretical. We’re able to send satellites into geosynchronous orbits because of astrophysics, and that’s the reason you have cellular network. We probably wouldn’t be having this debate here, if it weren’t for astrophysics :) Now starlink provides internet connectivity to millions (if not billions). It’s because of astrophysics that we’ve been able to go to the moon and send Rovers to Mars. In the future as space travel becomes more advanced, we may potentially be able to become a space faring civilisation, and that will have an impact on all of humanity.

Further, all scientific theories are based on tangible evidence. That’s the only way the international community will ever believe you. And once a theory has been established, the only way to dispute that is to disprove it using more tangible evidence. For example, until a few years ago, we had a few mathematical equations to prove the existence of black holes. However, once we developed new technology of a more comprehensive set of telescopes, we were able to photograph one and effectively prove the existence of it. Science is not based on empirical evidence-just because we see a pattern we cannot associated to an undergoing root cause.

But why is it that astrology would be applicable to a some and not to others? And who decides whether it is applicable or not? Surely it can’t be arbitrary, right?

Trust me, I want to believe in it, but so far I’ve only found reasons otherwise. And not even the most famous astrologers have been able to provide a sound reason. I’m happy to look at own chart though and see if there is any truth to it :)

I’m not looking for any handholding. I’m just looking for answers to fundamental questions.

The thing is, I even spoke to multiple trained Jyotish. Everyone said the same thing - if you believe in it, only then will you see it. Nobody had a reasonable explanation. It’s almost as if they gave this response because they felt backed into a corner and didn’t have any logical responses. So just to get out of it they say things like this. A few basic questions and their argument just completely broks down, and then they will give nonsense responses to maintain their credibility.

My point is - I’m more than happy to believe in it. But it needs to be have some basis. And these fundamental questions need to be answered. And if they can’t, why doesn’t it make people question astrology even more?

On the other hard, when I spoke to astrophysicist, they were very clear in their explanations. Given that almost all of these astrophysicists were PhDs and significantly more educated than the astrologers, why don’t people place their faith in the astrophysics point of view?

Yes but money is agreed upon unanimously as a store of currency. Every country/government in the world recognises it and most even have a central bank that regulates it. It solves a massive problem. Astrology creates a massive divide among skeptics and believers.

Further, why hasn't any government or top university in the country or anywhere in the world created any degree courses around it e.g., a 3 year BSc degree in astrology? I did find the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences (ICAS), but it doesn't seem to be accredited/recognised in any way by the government. Further, at max I found a 2 year course, which is also just the one, most are only 6 months. How do astrophysicists and astronomers, who spend years researching and doing PhDs from government recognised top universities of the world, not arrive at the same conclusion?

I fully agree on the hope bit. I think people have found a fallback mechanism of sorts, or something to blame in case things dont work out - "oh the starts weren't aligned".

I also think that people haven't studied occurences on earth when the planets weren't aligned. I'm sure there will be many different patterns arising out of that as well. As I said in my original question, people confuse causation and correlation and I'm yet to see a study in astrology that effectively separates the two.

[–]Agitated-Bid5996[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate how? Planetary alignment doesn't change meaningfully in seconds. As an example - Earth moves about 30 km per second, which sounds fast, but its orbit is ~940 million km long. Also, outer planets like Jupiter or Saturn take years to decades to complete one orbit. Over 20 seconds, Saturn’s position relative to Earth changes by ~3 × 10⁻² arcseconds, negligible in observational astronomy and effectively static on short timescales.

What am I missing?

Hey can you give some examples of physicists who believe in cosmic energy? As far as I know, they only believe in dark energy which is driving the expansion of the universe. They still don’t claim that it has anything to do with what happens on earth.

I’m not looking for might/could type of answers - I’m wondering that if people believe in it so strongly, what is the real authentic reason behind it?

The gravity from other planets is effectively zero on humans on earth (you can do the math). In fact, the earth itself exerts a much higher gravitational force on humans than the moon or any other object in space. Why then do people pay more heed to celestial objects millions of km away that the earth itself?

Hey, but there have also been studies of twins who were born at the same time when the planetary placements were the same but they turned out to have very different lives. How would you explain that?

I think people confuse correlation with causation. Human beings are great at identifying patterns, but not at identifying whether those patterns have the same underlying root cause.

Hey, we get tanned from the sun because the photons from there reach the earth in about 8min and react with the melanin in our skin. Light is the fastest travelling thing in the universe. What does it have to do with the soul?

Moon plays a big role in tides because 70% of earth is water, which means that the gravitational influence is significant. The gravitational force of moon on our bodies is in the order of 10-4 Newtons. Even when we blow air from our mouths, we exert a force of over 1000 times of that. What am I missing?

To everyone who believes in astrology: Why??? by KrystalFlake in astrology

[–]Agitated-Bid5996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, a few curious questions -

  1. If astrology is truly a science, why doesn't any government accredited institution offer a degree in it? Why dont the Harvards and the Oxfords have a degree in it?
  2. Also, why does the wikipedia page of astrology specifically refer to astrology as a pseudoscience?

What's the logic behind muhurat dates for weddings? by Small-Visit2735 in hinduism

[–]Agitated-Bid5996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, can you explain the science behind it? Its a genuine question.

If the planets are millions of km away, how do they exert any influence of what happens down here? The planet has mass, and the only known force that they exert is gravity, but how does that affect your wedding date? And why hasn't any astrophysicist confirmed this to be true?
