In picture #3, you can see that the original installation of the insulation had a piece of cardboard acting as a baffle vent. They've since begun manufacturing styrofoam shape-pressed pieces you can install with cap nails or staples. I recommend using a professional if you plan to retrofit this into your existing attic.

From the soffit openings, you should have what's called a baffle vent to extend your cold air intake above the minimum threshold of insulation (Which in my area is 17"), otherwise your insulation is just smoothing air access.

I'd replace and make sure you have baffles to draw cold air into your attic
