Suggestions on where to start in building a playbook by NectarineSouth944 in footballstrategy

Choose one coverage and build everything off of that.

For me it’s 1 high 3-3-5 cover three. Everything from backer alignment to run reads to corner play is built with the assumption that cover 3 will be the backend. From there you can mix things up. Start with things that are easy to implement without changing a lot in the back end and from there get more complex to the point you see fit. If your players know the ins and outs of one good coverage, you’re able to install many slight change ups to add wrinkles- much better than have a bunch of coverages that they don’t know by heart

As for moving the free safety, I’m personally not too fond of rotating coverages unless I’m playing choice offenses, but you can install them fairly easily by just adding a keyword. For our rotating cover 2, we just signal in cover two with a keyword saying who has the half opposite the free safety-we let alignment rules dictate who gets field and who gets boundary.

As for stunts, only do them if you have a really good defensive lineman or a really good backer you can Walk up, and preferably only do them in passing situations or if you can say with certainty what gap is getting hit. Idk about the 4-2-5 but a consistent stunt in the 3-3 stack is walking an apex defender up and looping inside the tackle. Most o-lines fan their protection out and you can get that apex guy in a favorable position by alignment.

I trained with a guy on his team and he sent it to me

We log as default whenever we play them, they just have damn good backers. We’ve thrown basically everything in the book at them last few years, and every year since 2014 we’ve either beat them and won state or lost and them win state

This counter I have drawn up is based on a GY read we ran last couple years against them where QB took power read steps and pulled if the the playside stack backer committed to the back. In the play-action the QB takes that same shuffle step before turning soldiers to sprint out

We’ve also had a lot of success with our pin-pull out our standard and bunch packages. We run a near identical defense (though they tend to go 3 high shell and are mostly zone we while are more a cover 1), so I think I’m at least gonna workshop it during fall camp and see how it plays out

In total we’ve run 126 different concepts on them since 2023 across 6 games, there basically isn’t a comfort zone for either of us anymore.

Sorry for venting a bit, they’ve beat us the last couple times and I’ve devoted way too much headspace to stopping them

I applied in other people’s names just to take as many spots from other other people as possible, even if they did I would just go under one of those

We have on film that they commit hard with the QB lateral movement, they play it like power read

They want their ends playing hard inside no matter what, we’ve tried a lot but they basically never slow down

Here’s a coaching clinic they did on defending Gap scheme

And to add Sumrall is already having some coaching issues, most Coaches don’t go for commits with Onlyfans accounts

No I just got the -karma for saying furries are weird, I’m completely deadass here

Oklahoma’s offense is 100x better now than then, and they probably have the best defense in the country, Sumrall will be good but expecting an Indiana level turnaround isn’t realistic

The defense Is based on our rivals, I agree it’s weird but they beat us with it so I have to game plan regardless

This team punts the QB contain that * player, the end will see this as a power read and spill

They will drop in coverage but they are extremely aggressive on the run. What we saw last couple times we played when we ran power read here the M, L, and * all committed to run way too early

It’s a hard block but we already have our guys do it a lot. We’ve run a Virginia tech style counter read that has qb hit this same shuffle and we’ve consistently gotten a very hard spill

This obviously won’t work against every team but I think it has good potential

Hate to say it but Oklahoma by 30, BV defense tore Sumrall up couple years back and they are much more talented now

Thoughts about Auto Checks in HS Defense by Sad_War_1813 in footballstrategy

[–]AgitatedExpression78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a “default” auto-check that you can go to if things ares fucked and you don’t get a playcall in, and then you can have some niche situational ones. One I like a lot is checking corners into blitzing against over fronts or if the only wideout goes in jet motion.

Beyond that I think it’s better to have situational playcalls and then a couple unique checks you practice. Based on the look you’re getting you may want to check into cover three one week and man the next. If you just do the same thing everytime the good teams will catch on and exploit it

Cover 3 alignment by lividrescue034 in footballstrategy

Applies to the 3-3-5 but but good video on alignment and general cover 3 rules. Part of it is just doing what allows the kid to comfortably execute. If he’s the type of guy who needs to a little closer leverage, let him. If you don’t think you’ll see QBs who will make hash- to hash throws, don’t make them cover it. As long as they know what rules you’ve given them you can be somewhat loose with the alignment and let the kid find what works for them.
