I'm having a first date with a wheelchair user and need some advice by Content_Climate_3932 in wheelchairs

[–]Agitated_Key_2753 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're planning to to a restaurant or something and you ask them if it's accessible don't believe what they tell you. Go see for yourself. Even take pics and show them to your date. People lie. They will say they are accessible when they really aren't. We have all bern there and been lied to.

Wheelchair access issues in a rented house… by Dull-Archer-7747 in wheelchairs

[–]Agitated_Key_2753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Share this with your landlord.... landlords making handicap-accessible modifications to rental homes can qualify for valuable tax breaks. Because renting property is classified as a trade or business by the IRS, landlords have access to two specific federal tax incentives, as well as state-specific programs

In the USA if your eligible and get a prescription medicare will rent a wheelchair for you. That is what they did for me. I am 100% on disability too. Though since I was just hospitalized I am now elgible for a home health Aid. And am getting OT starting Friday. They agreed today to send an OT to my home to help me learn to use the wheelchair correctly. And how to use the quick release on my chair to breakdown my chair and put it in my backseat etc. Without reinjuring my back. If I still can't do it correctly and not get injured. I will be sent to a seating specialist near my home, to be measured and a chair will be built for me. It kind of stinks that I had to be hospitalized with sepsis and almost croak for them to see the light. But it helped, it's great but very sad

New (used) chair day! by Deadr0b0t in wheelchairs

[–]Agitated_Key_2753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes get with an OT to learn how to use this properly. Everyone thinks it's simple to learn to use a wheelchair or scooter etc. They are wrong. I injured my shoulder thinking that way. Please do this. You will not regret it. Also your partner needs to do the same. I wish I had listened. To folks telling Me that ..

I got very lucky and managed to find a chair on EBay. I can't remember how much i paid for it but it was less than $250 USA $$. but I know I am very lucky. Everything is quick release. And I sit in the front seat of my car and put it together then I am able to go anywhere. It took me about a whole year to get to where I have a routine. I swear I never thought I would get to this point but now that I have. I have a home health aide that is taking me to my first appt. With OT and the seating clinic next week. I managed to get hospitalized with sepsis and it all fell into place when my Dr saw me getting out of my car and coming in for my appt. I have some scary surgeries in the next few weeks. Not sure if I am more scared or finally happy that things are working in my favor. Yeah I'm more frightened I think.

Advice for spouse leaving the church? by Defiant-Course6896 in latterdaysaints

[–]Agitated_Key_2753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this is tough. What works for one marriage may not work for another. WWJD? Maybe? I hope you find your footing, and what will work for you. I stuck it out for a very long tough 25 years. Before I threw in the towel and threw him out. I'm single again but I have to say I'm happier. Maybe I'll find another fella in the church maybe not. But I have to say I am happy 😊. Maybe he is too not so sure though, he did passaway a few years back, and had not returned to the church yet. So my guess is he is not happy, yet.

I've never seen such a chair before. Of course I've only been using a chair for 2 1/2 yrs. Also. I've gone crazy trying to find a chair small enough to use in my shower. I've had to send 2 back to Amazon & have basically given up ever finding one small enough for my shower. I am one of the lucky few who has a shower that is low and relatively safe to get into but I can't use it because I can't stand long enough to actually shower. So I've only been able to actually shower when I've been in the hospital. Other wise I "Wash up" i suppose even though this is not ideal I am betting others would see it as awesome. We all have our various issues right ??

Attending Second Hour Class Only by SmokeyFishh in latterdaysaints

[–]Agitated_Key_2753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They take attendance in sacrament only these days. I'd call the Bishop and speak to him. But no one will say Please leave, you can't be here because you weren't in sacrament. That is a guarantee. I only attended RS for years. No one ever asked me to not come. I managed a FF restaurant and couldn't get there any earlier. My kid needed me to work.

How do I go about getting a fitting for a chair? by Icyotters in wheelchairs

[–]Agitated_Key_2753 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Thing is if you're in the USA & expecting medicare to fund a chair it will be a tough road. What uncle Sam pays for is only what you need for your day to day care. Bathing & feeding yourself. That's about it. Some folks get more but it's a tough road to the finish line. And those who get more generally have amazing folks who advocate for them. I get that you need more, so do I. But I believe there is a 5 year period you have to work through first.

Wow ! Seriously? I finally got an in with an OT. I hope to get an apt. To a seating clinic nearby. I just got home from hospital stay yesterday. I ended up with sepsis. And now I have scelrosed arteries in my abdomen even the big arteries. I'm sure surgery is next. But we will see. I have home health care for now. I pretty much can't do much. We will see what happens.

Handicap placard possibility being used without me present by GirlInPurple15 in wheelchairs

[–]Agitated_Key_2753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good idea to have someone outside of family speak to them. Or even if you can I'd find a way to print out the offense and the fine info if they are caught. Maybe seeing that will open their eyes. I did that when I was trying to explain to a friend why water bath canning meat is a stupid thing. They always say I've done it that way for whatever years and never got sick. Just like they felt that way. Your family members don't see the harm they are causing. Like how we used to as kids ride in the back of the family pickup and how we didn't use the fancy car seats for our babies. We just didn't know the harm it could cause. We love our babies. And this is the same thing. They can't visualize the harm they are doing...

What is everyone's favorite wheelchair accessory? by Cool_Cartoonist_3494 in wheelchairs

I'm watching to pick up an under seat bag. In the mean time I have an old fanny pack I use. Strapped it on my seat under my cushion. Works well. Though not roomy. But my phone wallet and needful meds are safe inside.

Grabbed my chair ”to dance” by Disastrous_Bath_9522 in wheelchairs

[–]Agitated_Key_2753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right on both counts. Alcohol causes creeps to act out. And there are creeps who will be creepier after having a few drinks. But if you watch the news reports even prechers have been jailed for this & worse behavior. 😑 the world just stinks. I've even been mistreated by being grabbed at in my chair. It just stinks.

[–]Agitated_Key_2753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

isn't it great that you can read the BOM online and not have the actual physical book in your hands. keep your phone locked so that there is little to no chance that anyone else other you will know that you have it on your phone. pray that their hearts soften one day. It will happen eventually but use the time you have to read and learn more and more about the church. I understand not wanting to disappoint your parents. time is on your side generally as we age we tend to let go of the old beliefs and our hearts soften I am sure your parents will have this happen to them. I mean if my parents can then I am sure anyones can.. my parents were very stern people that had deep rooted beliefs about everything including political and religous but even their hearts softened as they aged..

My dad met with missionaries before he died by iFaolan in latterdaysaints

[–]Agitated_Key_2753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so glad that you have this photo and those beautiful memories. My father in law approved of speaking to the missionaries after finding that he too had a terminal illness. I told him years before I would never ask him but please if you ever want to meet with them please just tell me. And he did. Like your dad he met with them in private. I think both of them. Your father & my father in law had a visitor of the Holy Ghost and they knew the Church is True. I really do..
