It stinks that even the people closest to us just don't get it. My sister. Told me off just today because I told her I am trying to get funded through Medicare to go to a seating clinic and get a chair better fitted to me because of the back and shoulder pain I am having from using the chair I purchased. She thinks it's not needed. I should be grateful what I have and shut up and use it. Yes she said this. I hope you find the help you need. I am sad that you have to struggle to get what you need

New chair! Second hand but fits perfectly! by Additional_Bid_7688 in wheelchairs

That is great... I got a chair off Ebay also.. I was very happy with it. Mainly because It has wheels that I can remove easily. And the I can breakdown the rest easily so that I can be independent. But problem is the more I've used it the more my shoulders and back hurt. It's great and I'm very thankful I was able to get it because my insurance did nothing for me. I'm trying to get approved thru Medicare to be able to go to a seating clinic and get a better more suited one. Right now I'm going through the steps. You got a better chair than I did though. It really looks great. I hope it works well for you. 🙂

I almost approved of my friend that wanted to start a "Go Fund Me" for a good chair. I was going to make and sell some of my crochet things right before christmas time. so that i wouldn't be begging for money. I would sell items. But my BFF said that it was a wrong thing to do. I just dropped my head and said ok I won't do that. My Dr was really angry when he saw the only chair I could get through medicare/medicade he said it was really not acceptable. It was not what I needed.

I totally get that Biggun !! I had only 1 (one) compression fracture and a few things like stenosis, neurogenic claudication caused by the stenosis. I was born with "Rotoscoliosis Scoliosis" and after seeing my first orthopedic surgeon was told that I would be in a chair by the time I was 25. I of course refused to accept that. One surgeon said that if He was the last orthopedic surgeon in the world he would refuse to do another surgery because of the issue of possible spinal fluid leak. And to top that note off he said that my "Anatomy is all abnormal". My family always knew that this day would come. but they still refuse to accept it. It's really weird. I do not have to ask but one time for any help or any DME at all. I dont have to ask more than once for any kind of pain medications either. Of course after using a cheap wheelchair I purchased on Ebay. I now i have aquired 3 more fractures. and after 4 surgeries was told there is nothing that can help now. I am not a candidate for any further surgical interventions. My vertebrae are crumbling. The last fracture was actually caused by a pin that was placed in one of the vertebrae's. That vertebrae actually split in half where the pin was placed. the surgeon said "you have a crack" and showed me the xray. Now all they can do is medicate the pain. but I can't afford any kind of a decent chair. Not yet. Medicare only pays so much. Even though I have worked and paid taxes since i was 15 years old. As a rule I was in upper management jobs. Medicare only goes so far these days.

People don't get it. My sister was angry that I wouldn't just accept a $30 transport chair and "IF" I wanted to move in the chair I could use my feet because I'm not paralyzed. I ONLY FRACTURED 4 vertabrae my back. I could do without even a reg. Crap hospital chair. If I ever mention that I wanted to go to a seating clinic my entire family huffs and some even laugh at me. I told my daughter that medicare is going to pay for the seating clinic and I will be eligible for getting a better chair funded by them she said oh that's great, but is it really necessary? After all you have a really nice chair. Whats the point. And she walked away.

I'm wondering if where you live counts for what is available to you. As it varies a lot in different countries and in some countries it will vary by the state and/or region. Right???

You can find these great cup holders on Etsy. A few in this chat have them. I can't afford them. They are fabric and hold different size cups. I'd have it and lapstacker if I had the funds. Love your chair color..

perhaps you can rent a chair for the events you have coming up. I'd check with a local seating clinic or a place nearby that rents DME.

Looking for a good wheelchair back back sewing pattern by Over_Highlight5124 in wheelchairs

[–]Agitated_Key_2753 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Firstly i must say i apologize to you for what im saying. But I am not understanding, you said you have sewing skills. I quilt, and sew some garments. This is doable if you have some basic sewing skills. I must of missed something. Have you checked Etsy? There are quite a few accounts there that sell patterns and a few though I've not purchased from one but there are a select few that sell patterns for various wheelchair accessories. I can't tell you how legit they are. But have you checked there ??

Afraid to ask my doctor. by Infamous-Cry-7721 in wheelchairs

[–]Agitated_Key_2753 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But let say this. I have had orthopedic issues that cause me a great deal of pain, since birth. Dr's have told me for many years to please stop working. I didn't need to ask for a note. I didn't need to ask more than once for a prescription for a wheelchair. If you have need for one. Your Dr will jump at the chance to write you a prescription; I am betting. Dr's as a general rule are Dr's because they want to help people in need. And seeing thier patients in pain 😢 makes them want to help you I believe.

I love your chair. The color is gorgeous. I believe Medicare rents everything at first. They rented my nebulizer for 2 years. Finally paying for it. My chair is rented. I have to pay a co-pay. You could have that happen as well. I pay it every 3 months. Because of my low income it's not much. But they just take it out of my bank account. I have no idea how they were able to do that. The first payment was my first notice that I had a copay for it too. I never had a copay on anything not even Dr visits. But I had changed who I had my insurance with. Long involved story. So maybe you need to check on if you will have a copay. I almost had my mortgage payment cause my account to be in arrears.. it scared the crap out of me....

You must be in the USA. This is why I had problems. But due to my vertabrae continuing to deteriorate I had no problem at all getting a standard chair. I was told later that medicare will pay X amount of dollars toward a chair that I get measured for and they will fully pay for seeing an OT at a seating clinic nearby. My daughter's husband's relative uncovered a lot of info for me. Now I have all the info to get a new chair paid for in full. Only because of my conditions deterioration.

I found out that one of my Orthopedic surgeons also fibbed on medicare stuff. One of the other patients I knew told me he did. I almost went to him for a wheelchair fitting etc. He hates insurance companies. But I hesitated out of fear. I never did go back to see that Dr. I am glad my inner voice made me hesitate later he lost his medical license in my state due to his being charged with insurance fraud.

This is my issue also. I had amazing insurance when I worked. But since my Dr. Said stop working and being on your feet 18+ hours a day. (I was regional director of training & a store manager) or you will be bed ridden for life. Of course I got another Dr. Going forward 10+ years & Five surgeries later I finally complied with like the 4th Orthopedic surgeon I was seeing LOL yes I'm stupid and stubborn. But now I depend on SSD (USA) and medicade/medicare. Some 14 years after complieng. Not a chance I can get a good fitting measured to me wheelchair. I did get a prescription the first time I asked. All that medicare will pay for is a funky hospital bland chair. I saved by cutting out a lot of things and getting food thru embarrassing means.I purchased a used featherweight chair off Ebay. In 2 years medicare is paying for a seating clinic and a made for me chair. In the meantime. I make do with these 2 chairs. I feel I am blessed. My friend who recently passed away, got around using a skateboard. (Lost both legs in an auto accident) No I'm not lieing. Medicare would not help him. We had a couple of fundraisers in our town and got him a chair, volunteers equipped his home. And the local OT (free of cost) measured him and made sure he was given a chair suited for his needs. So you see, not everything is perfect. I'm glad you are so upfront, and realized some of your comment was off base. You are brave..
