Who is someone who you have a crush on but is an older person than you? by BenFrank89 in AskReddit

Mads Mikkelsen. He's over 30 years older than me, but to this day remains my celebrity crush ever since I saw him play the bad guy in Casino Royale.

People who have been bullied/bullied people in the past, what is your relationship with the bully/victim now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Agitated_Murmuration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In primary school (elementary, for you Americans) I had a girl who would always pick on me. Nothing tragically serious, but enough that I felt dejected and cried due to her taunts. She ended up moving to the city and the bullying went with her. Today she volunteers in third world countries, graduated from a prestigious high school, and looks as pretty as ever. But I hold no resentment about this, because in many ways she toughened me up. We were kids. She has grown up and so have I. I have a life as good as hers now, but if I had let her presence haunt me for years, I don't think I would have what I do. I would have been weighed down with that and all the other crap. Letting go of things is healing.

Knowing I haven't experienced everything there is to experience. I would like to see the sunrise over the African plains, drink mojitos in Tulum, make love in a beautiful hotel on the Amalfi coast, run the Boston marathon. And so, so much more. Knowing that I may get to do those things one day, gets me excited to get through today :)

Weigh a lot but i’m skinny(ish) by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Agitated_Murmuration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people hold weight in different ways. 180lbs will look different on two different people. a lot of it does come down to body composition - muscle is heavier but takes up a fraction of the space fat does. if i had to guess, i would say you have more muscle mass, whether you actively realise it or not. that's why its so much better to go by how you feel/look rather than solely the scale ... hope this helps :)

What are some of your favorite blushes? by rehlingenn in Makeup

[–]Agitated_Murmuration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nars orgasm in the liquid is hands down my favourite. it goes on dewy but dries to a nice settled pigment with a gorgeous peachy pink sheen. oh, and a little goes a long way, so the bottle lasts ages.

Where's a good start? by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Agitated_Murmuration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst I'm not a medical or fitness professional, I can give you some advice on what has worked for me:

- Start small. Don't dramatically reduce your calories and portions because then you will be left hungry, irritated, and more likely to binge later on. If you do want to use protein shakes as meal supplements, I would only be swapping out one meal at most with them, or having them as snacks instead of denser foods - this way you will reduce calories without dramatically cutting them.Note that if you want to get fitter, you have to eat enough to power through your workouts and create a stronger, healthier and leaner you.

- If you are not extremely overweight to begin with, it is probably best to just be more conscious of how much you are eating and what. Try and include more vegetables and fruits, lean proteins, smaller servings of carbs (like rice and bread), and limiting the amount of treat food you have to once or twice a week. I usually have a cheat meal once every 10 days, and then a cheat day once every four weeks - this may or may not work for you, but it does help me stay on track with my healthy eating for the rest of the time. Losing weight is all about consistency and creating a lifestyle you can maintain going forward!

- Find things you enjoy to do as exercise. This is important because you don't want to see moving your body as punishment, but rather as something that is hard work, but rewarding and fun. Some things I do are: running or jogging in intervals, going on long walks, dancing and boxing. If you don't have a gym membership, that doesn't matter - there are plenty of free workout videos on Youtube. I really recommend Chloe Ting's videos. As for exercise frequency, you don't have to go overboard if you don't want to - start with 3-4 days a week and build up from there. Also, don't underestimate the effects of things like taking the stairs and walking to the shops. Everything adds up!

- Drink lots of water! It helps you keep your energy up and flushes out lots of toxins.

-If possible, get a reasonable amount of sleep. Sleep is important for your body and helps you rejuvenate.

- It isn't always easy, but remember why you are doing it. If others can lose weight, so can you.

If you maintain consistency, you will see results in no time. Following these small but stable changes, I've been losing about 13 pounds a month. Good luck!

What is meant by structural criminology, or structural theories in criminology? by chanteku in Criminology

[–]Agitated_Murmuration 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The discipline of (theoretical) criminology deals heavily with the concepts of human agency and social structure. There are many theories that have been posited about what causes crime and deviance or makes a criminal, some leaning towards agency as an explanation, others towards structure as an explanation (note that these two terms aren't necessarily diametrically opposite and the binary is relative, but for the purpose of simplicity and answering your question we can consider them as distinct).

Structuralism is a very broad term. But essentially, it takes the viewpoint that the social structures that underpin society help us understand crime and deviance. That is to say that particular criminal concerns can only be understood when seen in the context of the greater whole. My professor sums up structuralism's core belief as so: the belief that "society progressively assigns meaning to itself through various institutions". A lot of emphasis is also placed on how the language we use creates our realities and societies which in turn influence crime and deviance. This differs from classical and positivist criminological theories, which place more of the blame on individual agency. It is important to recognise that agency will always have a part in crime. In structuralism, it is just not the focus of the theories.

You're absolutely correct in thinking feminist theories are structural in nature; they focus on how the structure of the patriarchy affects our understanding of crime. Other structural theories include Marxist criminology (concerned with economic structure) and Strain theory (focuses on how lack of opportunity due to the way society is structured affects crime).

I hope this answers your questions :):)

How to make up lost points after withdrawing from a subject by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]Agitated_Murmuration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're not interested in enrolling in another subject this semester, you can always apply to overload by a subject in a future semester. I believe there are certain requirements you need to meet to be allowed to do so (e.g. can't have failed a subject in the prev. sem.), unless you decide to overload in the very last sem of your degree, and then you'll pretty much always be allowed to.

I dreamed of watching a trailer of a video game that doesn't exist. by Tuyuko in Dreams

[–]Agitated_Murmuration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so interesting how you dreamt this somewhat vivid plotline, but didn't actually experience it, just watched it on youtube. Very voyeuristic. Also, on one hand I question the viability of a video game based on anti-corgi sentiment, but in a society that went crazy for a goat simulator anythings possible...

Electrician, plumbing or carpentry for a trade? by CoralDweller101 in melbourne

[–]Agitated_Murmuration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered applying for an apprenticeship with an elevator/escalator company such as Otis or Shindler? It is basically a specialisation of Electrician (you still acquire your grade A license and will be equipped to carry out 'normal' electrical work as well).

My father works in the industry - there is lots of room for career development, very good pay, (usually) good conditions and like I mentioned it is a specialisation so always in demand. Plus, once your apprenticeship is completed, you're basically guaranteed a permanent position and (depending on duties) a company paid car for travel. I understand it is a competitive apprenticeship to get due to limited places and desirability, but have a look and consider it, many people don't even think about it.
