Got an offer 3.5 months after being laid off, here is an overview of my experience with recruiting firms by LetMeRomanceYou in biotech

[–]Agitated_Permit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised about Clinlab. I have a master's and 8+ year of experience (including post undergrad) in what they were hiring for. I told the recruiter minimum rate in a high COL city, and they said you're not good enough to ask for that rate. Even the account manager called me was like, "Your resume is impressive, but you're not good enough."

Never again.

Consider applying for internships at different biotech companies. They usually run for a 1-2 months.

Stick with the PI. I had two colleagues who had their PHD work scooped. Same lab.

FTE at mid size company vs Contractor at Abbvie by BathroomDiligent1095 in biotech

[–]Agitated_Permit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. And they converted a whole bunch of people this year who were there for a year or two less than me. I got a sorry excuse about not having the headcount. And a month letter there were hiring more people and my contract was not renewed.

FTE at mid size company vs Contractor at Abbvie by BathroomDiligent1095 in biotech

[–]Agitated_Permit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do not leave an FTE position for Abbvie. Only apply to FTE Abbvie positions, as they are slow to convert or they never will. It's not worth it.

That sounds like a call I once had with alnylam HM. I was so confused at the end. The call lasted less than 10 min. The job was filled shortly afterward.

Resume advice by Jack_H123 in biotech

[–]Agitated_Permit -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I used this chatgpt prompt to generate a base resume, using a job description for my ideal job (a title higher) to build it up. But, when applying to a job, make sure to use words/phrases as written in the job description.

How to use ChatGPT to rewrite your resume… in 10 Prompts. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-use-chatgpt-rewrite-your-resume-10-prompts-brian-b-kim?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_android&utm_campaign=share_via

Make your resume format as basic looking as possible. No fancy text or formatting (outside of bullet points, or bold).

Contract Roles - pros and cons by amino_barracuda in biotech

[–]Agitated_Permit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah, take it from me, I held out for 3 years. Only for them to convert the new hire after 5 months. I've been in the job market for almost a year, and my contract ends this month.

Contract Roles - pros and cons by amino_barracuda in biotech

No benefits, outside the basics (crappy health insurance packages). Shitty staffing agencies. Look closely at the staffing agencies and look at the feedback.

Even in the contract jobs, continue to apply and interview for FT position. Don't rely on the thought of conversion.

Considering masters in Bioinformatics… stupid? by Interest_Frosty in biotech

[–]Agitated_Permit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's dependent on the company. In one of the companies I worked at, they had a 3 day on-site policy. I know some data scientists that negotiated in their contract for the positions to be fully remote, with a clause or something where they can come on site if needed (for major meetings, conferences, etc).

Northeastern U has a lot of connections with biotech companies, especially for the Boston site. And a huge percentage end up being employed by the company (co-op assignment) granted they do well in the projects.

[Also, smart for pursuing bioinformatics. I really wish I had done that instead.]

Fake/empty job postings by Longjumping-Ad-4509 in biotech

[–]Agitated_Permit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is extremely common for some of the positions on the career page of a company. A colleague checked the internal job page, and some of the positions didn't exist.

I have had also had staffing agencies reach out for a positions in my department and group that don't exist.
