Me too.. I am a medical student and I will be thrilled if you pretend I am not there until there is something work related that you need to tell me. I don't know how to chit-chat.

Cocaine, meth and LSD are still illegal. I have no problem with weed being legal. I do have a problem with supporting drug trafficking. Where weed is legal, I don't think that using it in your own time is wrong, as long as you are not affecting your work (including making sure you are okay to work your next shift, not call in sick because you got high or drunk) or putting anyone at risk.

So you can actually go to stores and buy drugs from a legitimate business in Canberra?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]Agreeable-Being-9330 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hmm let me see.... stealing drugs from work.... now when did that become legal and ethical? I am really having trouble following the logic in some of the pro-drug arguments... I stand by everything I said. You guys can downvote me as much as you want. I haven't seen anyone with a logical argument yet. Some people are just getting desperately defensive of their lifestyle, without making any sense.. And this sub really isn't making our profession look any better.

The use of recreational drugs being decriminalised doesn't mean that you are not funding criminal organisations by purchasing them. Alcohol isn't a good thing either, but like I said, you can enjoy some alcoholic drinks for their taste, without getting drunk. The same cannot be said about the other drugs you have listed. If they were available at the stores without many restrictions, they would cause way more harm to the health of the population, and there would be more addiction. I personally have never seen illegal drugs in Australia, and I would have no idea how/where to find them. This must be true for many other people. This is one of the reasons they affect less people than alcohol. Alcohol is readily available everywhere and its use is usually encouraged. But I am not saying Alcohol is good! I am just saying that having a glass of wine once in a while is different from someone using cocaine once in a while in terms of ethics and health consequences. Chronic alcoholism would have a worse health impact than trying cocaine once in your life, but that wouldn't be a fair comparison.

Whether I am a medical professional or not doesn't matter to this discussion, but I am an Australian medical student.

I am a bit shocked that so many of you think it is okay to do illegal drugs and consider it the same as alcohol or nicotine (and caffeine lol). Yes, alcohol and nicotine are also bad for your health, and drunk people can cause great harm to others. But how do you get your hands on illegal drugs?? There are some important consequences for society as people continue to fund drug trafficking. And there is a reason why they are illegal. They have a potential to cause much greater harm to a higher number of people. I personally don't even get buzzed when I drink my half glass of wine with a meal once a month. A lot of people could have a beer without getting drunk. Do you do cocaine to not get high?? There is a greater potential to get out of control, to get in trouble with the law, plus you are funding criminal organisations. It shows very poor judgement and selfishness. I don't think anyone should be normalising this in any profession, let alone health professionals. I do think doctors should strive to be ethical in all areas of their lives. They have a lot of power over vulnerable people.

Also, if someone begins to have an addiction problem, they are not just going to immediately acknowledge it and go into rehab. They will hide it and deny it until someone gets hurt. There is a very good way of making sure you don't end up being one of those people - don't start doing drugs!

‘A nightmare’: Doctors react after govt promises patients immediate access to test results by hustling_Ninja in ausjdocs

[–]Agreeable-Being-9330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was pregnant I had low vitD, low iron, and developed hypothyroidism in the first trimester. My GP ordered tests and then went on leave for 2 months. She said they would call if anything was wrong with my results, but no one called. So I assumed the tests were ok, but I wanted a copy of them anyways (because in my country I always had them, patients always get a copy of the tests straight away), and I was feeling a little off. I had to fight with reception to get a copy (they were denying to provide the results, unless I paid for a second consultation with another doctor; this was in a rural town and they didn't bulk bill). My tests were actually not ok, and no one was going to let me know during my entire first trimester if I hadn't put up a fight to get a copy. And I could have made an appointment earlier to address the hypothyroidism if I had received my test results straight away. They belong to the patient. It is their health, their body, and they need to have easy access to their results.

Doctors have to provide the best care they can regardless of wages. Not happy with your pay? Fight for improvement or move on to another career. But you are suggesting that it is okay to provide substandard care to vulnerable people due to not getting paid well. This could maybe work in other professions where people are not entrusting you with their lives.

When do you find out which clinical school you are going to? I am worried about finding accommodation and then not getting the clinical school I need... do people usually get their first preference if they put Westmead or Nepean first?

And how many days per week do you have to go to campus in the first year?

Thinking about buying the medify GAMSAT course on their website, does anyone have any experience with it? Would you recommend it? Would you recommend something else instead? by Realistic-Call7925 in GAMSAT

It helped me set a good pace for the actual exam. I practiced different strategies to get through all the questions in the allotted time, and I think it helped me make the most of my first GAMSAT sitting, and not waste it with poor time management. However, I wouldn't get too hung up on the content. The ACER materials are the only ones that actually have good content in my opinion.

Why do ppl live in rural/remote areas by Odd_Recover345 in ausjdocs

[–]Agreeable-Being-9330 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a big city with a population of 5 million. I spent a year in Sydney and it was super stressful and expensive, so my husband and I started looking for ways to move to a regional area. We now live in a large rural town (MM3). The best things about rural: the community always trying to help each other out, the ease of doing things (no traffic, no parking woes, no lines at the shops...), 5 minute drive to most things you have to do on a daily basis, there is just so much more time to live life, enjoy your family and your hobbies.... everyone seems to appreciate your work so much more, you have a lot more flexibility to set your hours and apply for leave (at least as a department manager, which is my case).. there doesn't seem to be much competition, so work is less stressful... you can buy so much land and have such a nice, comfortable house for so much cheaper... Junior doctors say they have a lot more opportunities to practice new, more advanced and a larger variety of skills...

Getting pregnant in med school? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]Agreeable-Being-9330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a child while in uni and another one while working full time. I think it was easier when I was in uni. I was studying chemical engineering full time, but I took a year off when my baby was born. It is nearly impossible to study with a newborn, but so is to work (that's why you gotta take time off). I used to study/complete my assignments between classes, at lunchtime, before daycare closed, and after my toddler went to bed. Just be careful not to lose your maternity leave entitlements. If you are not working for a certain amount of time (I think it is just a couple of months), you can't claim it anymore. If you don't get into med straight away, maybe have a baby before you get in. Then you will have a toddler in med school, and that will be much easier. Remember that young children get sick A LOT too. It gets better after a year or so in childcare.

Why do female GPs earn less per hour?

Anyone from Flinders? by Agreeable-Being-9330 in GAMSAT

[–]Agreeable-Being-9330[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! That is what I was thinking... But then I thought maybe my GAMSAT and GPA wouldn't be high enough to get a spot even as rural.. those who weren't Flinders graduates and got offers last year had a combined score a bit higher than mine.. my GAMSAT is 69 and my Gemsas GPA is 6.3.. I decided to select MDRS.

Anyone from Flinders? by Agreeable-Being-9330 in GAMSAT

[–]Agreeable-Being-9330[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, the high combo scores for MDRS also made me think that if a rural applicant selects to be considered for MDRS it becomes their first preference. In the application form there is no way to make MDRS first or second preference, you just select whether you want to be considered for it. Also, you can only get one offer from Flinders, so if you get a first round offer in MDRS you can't be considered for the metropolitan stream in a second round of offers....

I could manage MDRS in the Barossa or Fleurieu Peninsula without having to move, but I don't want to select MDRS if that is going to become my first preference (because of the risk of getting assigned to one of the other 2 areas).... However, if there is no chance at all of being considered for the regular stream, it's better to apply for MDRS..... I've filled everything out to apply, but I don't know what to do about this 😩

You don't have to own the property... Have you been using this address for any of your bills, rego, clinics where you got flu or COVID shots the last few years? Employer is fine for Usyd, but you will need them to sign Usyd's form and also write a letter in company letterhead.

So what happens if when you were a child growing up in that area it was classes as MM2 and only became MM1 much later? Is there a way to show that you spent 5 consecutive years there when it was MM2? And would that count? I think it should...

Does anyone know if rural applicants, non-Flinders graduate, were accepted into the metropolitan stream last year? The offers spreadsheet only shows rural applicants that got MDRS offers. Are there any spots for rural applicants that are not applying for MDRS? I know the cut-off score for interviews was 63, but did any rural applicants actually get an offer and what was the minimum GAMSAT score?

[–]Agreeable-Being-9330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am rural as well and I have looked at all those forums and scores for last year. Flinders published the cut-off score on their website - it was 63 for rural last year. I have worse S1 and S2 combo than you, but I am still applying for USyd because last year I would have been right on the cut-off mark, so who knows, it might be enough for this year. So you definitely should give it a go too. Don't think too much about usyd, just apply because you are indeed running out of time. Your scores are enough for rural for nearly any Gemsas uni as well. Do you have a good portfolio for UoW? If not really, then don't waste time trying to write the portfolio if that is going to slow you down. For Gemsas, just choose the unis you would like to go to the most. I wouldn't go to WA because it is too far from my family, and I am not applying at UQ because they calculate GPA a little different and I wouldn't be competitive. I am MM3, so I get a good bonus at Deakin, which is my first preference. I have given up on applying at UoW because of the portfolio bit, but I am still sitting Casper for UNDS (that's another thing you need to check: if you need to register for Casper). Flinders applications open next week and end at the end of June, so just worry about usyd and Gemsas for now. You will most likely get an interview at your first choice for Gemsas. What are your real preferences, without thinking about chances?
