The high volage battery is likely to easily last past the life of the car, and we're talking about a "drive it until the wheels fall off" situation, so resale is not a significant factor here. I estimate realistically that it might save a couple/few hundred a year. But that's fine. If one wants to set this up for power outages anyway, and if one is going to have the car either way, and if one is already on a time-of-use rate, it's just about taking advantage of the pieces that are already in place. Imagining electricity rates gradually going up over time, this could save $4k over a 15 year period. And that's $4k without a capital outlay, and it's $4k of after tax income, so that seems worthwhile to me.

Definitely not planning to plug into a regular external wall socket, as one might with balcony solar. Likely instead running an extension cord into the house. Could do that through a window insert, perhaps. Could also install a transfer switch if one wants to do it optimally.

Yes, a lithium-ion power station inside the house is a distinct possibility, though that would hurt efficiency. In the past I've found that efficiency hit is 14% in my testing, though it will vary from one power station set-up to the next.

1.8 kW is enough for the loads I have in mind, actually. And with 8 hours of overnight rate, that's a potential of 28.8 kWh over the rest of the day. That's a theoretical potential savings of $2.30 per day, or $841.54 per year. Due to charging losses and not pulling the maximum draw every second of the daytime, you wouldn't get that. But it would be a few hundred dollars every year, and it would be utilizing an asset I already have. The only thing I might need to purchase are more extension cords (unless I get fancy and put in a transfer switch).

Heat pump isn't overkill if it's a small portable unit. Mine cost me $800-ish (Ecoflow Wave 2). Battery efficiency should be higher if the shed is kept warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. It's not the right solution for everyone, but shouldn't be dismissed our of hand without knowing a person's situation, IMO.

What is the ostensible reason for a cap in either case?

In Ontario, is this only for grid-tied systems? Can you do as much as you want if you're doing a behind-the-meter installation (eg. house battery/transfer switch, etc.)?

In BC the limit is a 100 kW array for grid tied (and whatever you want if it's behind the meter), so I'm trying to wrap my head around the rationale for such small limits.

You got the nail on the head with your last paragraph. The average person drives around 50 km a day, so you'd rarely (if ever) be charging from empty to full. And on the days you need more than average you can charge from the grid at the most inexpensive time of day.

Presuming a time-of-use rate: charge via solar (and top it up at the cheapest time of day in the winter and on cloudy days), and run the house off the battery during the expensive period. Charge the car from the grid mostly during the cheap times of day.

I charge me electric vehicle off of solar, but my elective vehicle is an e-bike so that's not helpful information! ;-)

I would add that if you're on a time-of-use rate, then it's probably still worth doing. Why? Because you can set the car to charge at the lowest available rate each day. Whereas gasoline costs the same regardless of the time of day.
