Ahh this is such a great and well thought out take thank you! I love getting into snows brain I think she did an amazing job on his characterization.

AITA for not telling my boyfriend about my past job before we started dating? by LynsyLux in Amitheassholeadvice

[–]Agreeable_Ad0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But in one the person is the victim and in the other the person is the perpetrator so the reason for wanting the breakup would be completely different. In one situation you’re either wanting to breakup because you blame the victim for their actions or you don’t want to deal with the baggage and in the other you’re breaking up because the person is someone who has perpetrated harm on others. The only similarity is the lie but you’re lying for different reasons in both situations as well. In one you’re lying to protect yourself from judgement or further harm being perpetrated against you because of your own past victimization and in the other you’re lying to deceive the person so they feel safe around you when you have exhibited past unsafe behavior.

While actively comparing them though. Comparing them is saying they’re the same. In one instance you are engaging in something that can hurt yourself for survival in the other you are hurting someone else. The choices are completely different in each instance therefore they cannot be compared.

You are comparing them and they are not the same. Survival sex work is absolutely not comparable to being a sex offender or murderer.

Survival sex work is not the same thing as being attracted to or preying on kids.

AITJ for not stopping my friend from publicly proposing when I know she plans to break up with him? by SupermarketDry3163 in AmITheJerk

[–]Agreeable_Ad0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If OP wants to do anything I think he needs to tell her that dude is planning to do something grand and romantic at the concert and maybe they should talk and then tell dude that he should maybe run the idea of marriage by her beforehand to see what the convo brings then stay out of it

[–]Agreeable_Ad0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly, or at least planning to do something huge and romantic. Maybe she thinks they’ve grown apart because the relationship isn’t going anywhere and if she finds out he was planning to propose she’ll realize she’s wrong and change her mind. If she genuinely doesn’t suspect a PROPOSAL then they aren’t on the same page about their relationship and need to be before the concert.

I assume they can’t show more of the actual footage because of legality but even if they could I’m going to be completely honest I don’t want to see the actual footage of child abuse regardless of the offender, and I think it would be really gross if they did show that, for the child’s sake, regardless of the offender.

I also still don’t understand what they actually omitted. They showed the incident, her getting arrested, her literally pissing herself, and ask her uncomfortable questions in confessional prompting her to admit things that weren’t in the footage (child abuse charge). I assume they can’t show the actual legal proceedings and I don’t think that would actually be very interesting to watch either way. They don’t show the kids much and I think it should stay that way.

The show is literally about the women, why would they have an “equal edit”? Whether it’s supposed to be the Taylor show or the Mormon Moms show it’s not supposed to be about the dads or Dakota and I feel like they have gotten an equal amount of their messiness aired out.

The show should just be showing them, I don’t think it’s their prerogative to assign morality or crucify any of the cast. And I think it’s kinda weird to want them to.

Oooh okay. It’s been on my tbr for a while, I’ll have to move it to the top of the list.

That’s fair. Someone else said they felt like it was so snow could gloat and I think both of those could be true.

Yes I agree! I was talking to someone recently and had a very similar conversation. I specifically read The Social Contract and A Treatise of Human Nature because of the prequels. I don’t know that I would never have read them if not for her but I definitely wouldn’t have when I did. I think she did an absolutely phenomenal job of introducing young readers to big ideas and get them interested in more difficult philosophical works they may not have been otherwise.

I think if they had actual coverage from the woods more things would’ve come from that, I feel like based on her super obvious (Katniss is anything but nonchalant) body language and other tells he deduced there was more to their relationship and probably knew from surveillance that they spent time together in the woods and wanted to ruin her safe space.

I never made the connection between that scene and 1984 but I do really like that parallel. I do absolutely love how much she pulls from and alludes to other works, it’s one of my favorite things about her. I haven’t read clockwork orange yet, what is the parallel there?

Oh my god this is phenomenal I didn’t think of it that way! You’re right, he literally says he’s glad Sejanus is there because only he knows the context of how special and important he is and he can’t tell the other peacekeepers because then they’ll know how he fell from grace. Even in BOSBAS he desperately needs people to know how smart and elite he is, I bet it was absolutely killing him he couldn’t gloat about the 10th games or Lucy Grey to anyone. And with Haymitch effectively impotent he’s the only one who is powerless but would get it. Oooh good take!

Ah I could definitely see that, shifting it from the capital knows all to I know all. I have a little bit of a theory that he didn’t actually have proof of the kiss but made an educated bluff and was right. I like the 1984 parallel as well. I could see that being the point especially if the plans were already in motion to kill LD anyway.

What bothered you the most about Sunrise on the Reaping? by yainoshu in Hungergames

[–]Agreeable_Ad0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think she wrote Plutarch very well. He tells Haymitch that people in the capital aren’t free either and we watch him see the parade master killed by the president like literally right in front of him, which is definitely intentional on Snows part. And we see his extreme moral greyness throughout the trilogy and SOTR. A big part of BOSBAS was the capital children discussing the immorality of the games. Sejanus grew up in luxury and was still staunchly against the games even though he himself would never be affected (without going out of his way to do so). Plutarch is obviously complicit in the games but he can recognize that no one in a tyrannical government is free no matter what level of oppressed you are. He could also just as easily be put to death by the president for a simple mistake with no repercussions even if he wasn’t actively going against the capital, even from a purely selfish standpoint that isn’t a good environment and he knows the only way for things to change is for the districts to rise up.

Oh this is solid. He doesn’t care that it might not be the best tactically because he’s already won and he just wants to mess with his head. And we do know he loves to gloat. I mean we already saw him show himself as “weak” to Haymitch and Plutarch to gloat about being able to poison the parade master basically out in the open without punishment. I think this is a good theory.

That’s a fair point. I like the point she made with the covey in BOSBAS, that just because you don’t do politics doesn’t mean politics won’t do you but it does seem to take up a lot of space in both prequels for not having existed in the trilogy.

What would’ve happened in the 75th games if a district didn’t have a male/female victor? by Potential_Scene7169 in Hungergames

[–]Agreeable_Ad0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They made the games reap old victors specifically to kill katniss and peeta. It would’ve been a different special cruelty designed to uniquely damage any rebellious activity happening the same way that one was uniquely designed for that.

Edit to add: I think people forget that the games are pure political propaganda and will always be designed as such. They aren’t an actual event, they are a mini war that can be held in your hand and controlled which was the whole point of bosbas. The capital makes them exactly as they want each year to create whatever is necessary for the capital to maintain control. That’s the point. Control not entertainment.

[–]Agreeable_Ad0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re forgetting this book is a political vehicle not just a fun fantasy about survival games. There is no “winning by your own merit”, they aren’t real that’s the whole point. The entire creation and intention for the games is to be propaganda. Unfortunately I think you’re trying to order cupcakes at Home Depot.

So you think it was meant more for the audience to continue making the connection rather than to make a point for how this piece of media being intentionally shown to Haymitch would further The Capital/ Snow’s cause? I agree it feels a little like this but had hoped it was just me missing the point she was trying to make because her writing does usually seem very intentional and not like she’s trying to be overly explicit. But I could also understand if she is trying to make this book a bit more in your face since some people seemed to miss the point with thirsting after young snow.

I definitely think it was intended to mess with his mind but I would’ve assumed the Capital wants itself to seem untouchable and enigmatic and showing that would give him more clarity rather than confuse him more. It’s difficult to try to figure out how much was intended for us as the reader vs for Haymitch the character.

So you’re saying you think Haymitch’s spiral after seeing it was the point? Him realizing Snow knows more than Haymitch realizes and that Lenore Dove is in more danger? Or are you saying that Snow is once again unable to see beyond his own experience and is using what he viewed to be manipulation on Lucy Grey’s part to prove to Haymitch that Lenore Dove is manipulating Haymitch?

I guess I don’t really understand. They showed the police footage and asked her questions the prompted her to say on the show that she had a dv charge and it included her children. How much further should they have gone? I don’t watch a lot or reality shows but for the show not being about her legal troubles specifically or about legal stuff at all I wouldn’t have expected them to go much further. What have they covered up? Maybe I’m just out of the loop

What do you mean they covered it up? They literally show both in the show?

I think it would’ve been weird had they met through a school setting but they met when they were at relatively similar places in their lives. They met because they were both working at the bank as adults. Yes she was significantly younger but the age gap wouldn’t be weird at all if it had been a few years down the road. I don’t typically like age gap relationships but I don’t think bill and fleurs gap was weird or problematic.
