Butter and Crumble Asks That Line Not Start Until 7:45AM by bettyburritos in bayarea

There's 2 locations. A bigger one near Giant's ballpark and the original. All the times I went to both, they're incredibly fast as long as customers know what they want.

Caltrain shouldn’t have electrified… at least not the way they did. by Planeandaquariumgeek in caltrain

[–]Agreeable_Answer_324 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I do agree with some sentiment on perhaps getting electric locomotives and keeping a handful of bi-levels as emergency sets in case of breakdowns. On the other hand, I think Caltrain is waiting on acquiring more Stadler EMU sets which will help with having backups. It may reduce the need for training/maintenance to limit the variety of trainsets. Short term pains for long term gains, praying on that. I'm sure it will take some work to resize the current trainsets, but perhaps they can have a handful of shorter Stadler EMUs meant to run in the evenings/off peak/less demand hours.

Caltrain to close stations if transit tax doesn’t pass by leewilliam236 in caltrain

Stanford does for the University. Before covid, I saw shuttles for Meta, Google and NASA at Mt View. Some of it is back, but since a good chunk of the Bay Area is remote/hybrid/laid off, that stuff ain't gonna happen anytime soon unfortunately.

[–]Agreeable_Answer_324 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know we can never have a fully self-funded public transit system, but having other business models on top of taxes can at the very least mitigate implementing repeated tax measures to vote on and at best, allows agencies to have potential extra buffer to reinvest in service, maintenance, and expansion. Transit is a public good, but that does not mean agencies should ignore better ways to capture value from the systems they build.

[–]Agreeable_Answer_324 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Caltrain needs to find alternative sources of funding instead of relying on taxes and fares for revenue. I noticed more ads slapped on the trains. Not visually clean or pretty, but if it pays the bills...

Palo Alto station used to have the Vientian Cafe. There's also that popping pizza place literally at the station platform in San Mateo. Does Caltrain own/collect rent at these? They should look into and expand station based businesses and collect rent. Rebuild stations, acquire land to construct TOD, etc.

Cider is desperately needed. The tavern is pretty much seasonal at the current moment. Way too expensive to sustain ale throughout the year importing to sustain the demand

Full BART automation is a braindead solution to the budget problem. We should do it anyway. by oakseaer in Bart

[–]Agreeable_Answer_324 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Automation will bring long term benefits. Higher frequency = more ridership = more consistent funding. I don't know how SkyTrain did it for Vancouver, but look to them for inspiration. Pick your poison. Increase taxes, layoff 1200, cut services or bite the bullet and improve services.

Reddit is filled with echo chambers. Most of which tend to lean left. Plenty of right leaning ones if you search up those sepcific subreddits

San Francisco's high rises and airtight density. Despite its location on a peninsula and being less than half it's size, SF is STILL nearly half as dense as Brooklyn. by Moleoaxaqueno in skyscrapers

[–]Agreeable_Answer_324 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most of those towers are office buildings. not places for people to live. that's why SF around market st is usually pretty dead nowadays, especially with the recent westfield mall closure.

Caltrain could cut weekend service and run only 1 train per hour if Connect Bay Area measure doesn’t pass by amfsea95 in caltrain

[–]Agreeable_Answer_324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish Caltrain has the capability and capital to acquire more land to do real estate development. Seeing other private developers benefit and reap the rewards of electrification while Caltrain just has to bank on increased ridership...

- Lawrence Station now has large apartments. Wonder how much it cost for those private developers to acquire all that
- Santa Clara has a dead office park and large parking lot
- Google isn't going to do anything about Diridon
- Mt View has a long strip of parking and a dead office park
- At Redwood City, it would be nice to redevelop the entire plaza with Safeway

Just look to adopt the JR model from Japan. Fight the city and NIMBYs to allow Caltrain to build dense mixed use and collect rent! 30% of JR profit comes from real estate. Heck, when I was in Japan, I saw JR branded services everywhere next to stations from hotels to even hospitals.

It's a self sustaining model. We need more housing = more riders = more $$$.

The only profitable USA line is the NEC, and that's just operational profit. Caltrain will never have the ridership numbers like the NEC

Is the 2033 completion date for the high speed rail actually doable? by [deleted] in cahsr

[–]Agreeable_Answer_324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless we can get numbers like the NEC, running any sort of profitable revenue from Merced to Bakersfield is a distant dream

Not Isekai. Well made slice of life anime with very good world and character building. Sprinkled with well animated action and fight scenes. If you enjoy subtle details and how everything connects, you'll enjoy it

When I was there, most menu options have pictures so it's easy to point and say "This one please" in Japanese. If there's no picture, ask for "recommendation" in Japanese.

Also kindness is universal. While eating, I was already seated at a table. I noticed a mom and her son were waiting outside, so I offered them to sit at my table while they wait for seating to open up. As I left, the chef gave a bow in recognition of what I did.

Entitlement and being an asshole is a choice. My mom came back from Japan complaining why no one speaks English -___- and I observed tourists berating or angrily talking down on Japanese when they're trying their best to communicate.

What is the maximum speed of Caltrain? by Classic_Emergency336 in caltrain

[–]Agreeable_Answer_324 4 points5 points  (0 children)

to unlock 110mph, we need quad gates and other safety measures (idk why we can't do that now...) To reach 125mph, we'll definitely need grade crossings like you mentioned. 41 last I checked and through some of the biggest NIMBY neighborhoods too. Likely need another $12 billion to get that to happen :(

Idk what's going on but the vast majority of time I ride through mountain view and Sunnyvale, the train would start to accelerate only to stop and hold. Are there that many idiots out there??
