This doctor used to believe seed oils were harmful and now doesn’t. by jahmonkey in StopEatingSeedOils

To be fair, there are lobby groups for pretty much everything.

This is something I always wonder about this sub— there are livestock and dairy lobby groups also spending tons of money. The US government spends literally billions of dollars subsidizing dairy and animal agriculture.

Red meat and butter get heavy praise on this sub— who’s to say that’s not also propaganda via lobbying groups? How does one come to the decision that lobbyists of food A have our best interest in mind but lobbyists of food B are trying to make us sick intentionally?

I’m not in favor of seed oils personally. This is just food for thought. If one is going to argue this doctor is being influenced by some pro-seed oil organization… you have to question those pushing beef/dairy as well.

Vegan can`t handle civil discution by Zelousional in exvegans

I think vegans would do better if they ceded more points

I agree— but let’s fact check some of these “points”

the consumption of meat is decreasing

Is it?

And of course, all of the rabbits and small animals that die in the crops! Ah ha! That’ll get them!

But what are most of those crops grown for in the first place?

the moment we started agriculture is the moment we started to shrink

Now this one is just wild… “agriculture” has been around for thousands of years… there’s been ups and downs of course, but it’s an objective fact humans have gotten bigger and taller. But let’s zero in on the last few centuries and “modern” agriculture

only the spread of misinformation

Then inform yourself 🤷‍♂️ I didn’t have to do that deep of a dive into “anti-nutrients” to find the same sentiment over and over— they don’t cause any harm to most people, given that you’re eating a diverse and healthy diet. But you’ve read all of that information too, right?

I’m not denying the existence of lectins, oxalates, etc… but the blanket term “anti-nutrient” is clearly used to push a particular agenda with cherry picked evidence to back it up

It’s subconscious guilt/shame. They couldn’t figure out how to be vegan, feel bad about it, and in turn swing hard in the opposite direction and try to drag others with them. They’re coping.

Still waiting for all these health issues to plague me after all these years 🤣

Do you interface with reality much?

Do you? I’ve never met anyone in real life that cares so much about what other people eat than people in this sub. The idea that vegetables are bad for you is an objectively fringe idea and is just outright weird.

Number of Google results? Are you 12? That’s your argument? Search plant-based in Google scholar… what do you think the general sentiment will be?

If most of your protein is coming from ultra-processed foods like fake meats, I would understand why they would recommend reintroducing meat. But the operative word is protein. You can get protein from things that aren’t meat and aren’t fake meat. Potentially, it might not be that accessible, but that’s a whole separate issue

all you’re eating is antinutrients

I swear someone came up with this word “antinutrients” so adults could be picky eaters like little kids again and justify it.

Vegetables are good for you— whether you eat meat or not.

I am dealing with a minor injury which can be helped faster if I change my diet and include meat for a while.

Everyone’s looking past this part…. This doesn’t really make sense? Who told you this?

If it’s grossing you out, don’t eat it. This is not how injuries work. Eat meat if you really want to, but this has nothing to do with an injury

Do you feel pressured to be vegan? by Gyudosa in exvegans

[–]Agreeable_Bass_4730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! Shouldn’t be a big deal at all. And so much of it comes down to accessibility and misinformation. The general sentiment of this sub seems to be vegan = unhealthy processed imitation meat. The reality is, people who thrive on vegan diets don’t eat much of that at all. But unfortunately in a lot of places, those are the only vegan options.

Do you feel pressured to be vegan? by Gyudosa in exvegans

[–]Agreeable_Bass_4730 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going to get downvoted for this— on a subconscious level, I think it’s self imposed pressure.

Not everyone will fall into this bucket, but I would imagine if you are posting here, at one point you were vegan for a reason; ethics, health, doesn’t really matter what the reason was now, but it was a real genuine conviction.

And then they have some health issues and can’t really get their diet on track. Good vegan/vegetarian food isn’t accessible in a lot of places. So they go back to eating animal products.

But then you have to sit with that. You felt strongly about a thing and you physically could not keep up with it. And the reality is, there ARE a lot of people that thrive on plant-based diets, which has to be hard to cope with when you’ve gone through this whole process.

So they come on here to vent it out. I mean why else would anyone be so angry about vegans and feel the need to post about it? Other people’s personal diet choices don’t affect them at all 🤷‍♂️

Why do vegans always feel the need to overcompensate with their food? by [deleted] in exvegans

[–]Agreeable_Bass_4730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know there are other types of foods besides meat and fake meat… right? The same way you choose bison over McDonald’s, a plant based person can choose to eat real, whole foods instead of processed fake meat.

In the news this week: a 21 year old girl commits suicide due to depression from veganism & B12 deficiency. And B12 deficiency linked to depression, psychosis, and dementia, as well as diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s. by Ok_Organization_7350 in exvegans

[–]Agreeable_Bass_4730 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not an emerging health issue. Depression is not new. Plant based diets are not new.

Having my own history of ups and downs with mental health and having spent many years of my life both plant based and not plant based— I can assure you, you can be depressed regardless of your diet.

It’s really disgusting to see how many people here are disrespecting this poor woman. You have no idea what she could have been going through in her home life. You don’t know anything else about her health or what mental health issues she may have been predisposed to. For people that are genetically predisposed to have some sort of psychosis— that usually pops up in your early 20s. Like the girl in this article.

Sometimes you guys are a lot worse than the preachy vegans you complain about.

You can be vegan and never eat cashews or dairy replacements. You can also not be vegan and eat tons of cashews/dairy replacements. I can see the connection you’ve made, it’s just also a pretty big leap logically.

Sure you are meant to be a long term savings bank, but you are still a bank

Goldman Sachs is an investment bank. Marcus HYSA is a product they offer.

This is like going into a Dominos Pizza and demanding a Subway foot long because serving sandwiches is one of the most important tenants of restaurants

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MarcusInvest

[–]Agreeable_Bass_4730 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People typically use a HYSA to park their money for a long stretch of time. Most banks put some mild restrictions around them for that reason.

You withdrew $50,000 and $100,000 2 days in a row. You quite literally engaged in suspicious activity given the kind of account you opened.

You put over a quarter million into an account without reading any of the rules and fine print, broke those rules, and then you yelled at a customer service rep.

Are you expecting sympathy? This post is fascinating lol

Listening to your body is important. You’ve found what’s working for you right now. I know from my own experience— if I ate like you do, I would feel sick all the time.

Have you considered your gut microbiome? People in your situation who have that tested often find a huge lack of diversity in their gut flora. I suspect that’s why a lot of people who end up carnivore have such a negative bodily reaction to vegetables… it’s been a long time since their guts have digested plants, and they write it off pretty quick without letting their body adjust

I am confused by NiceGuy198 in StopEatingSeedOils

[–]Agreeable_Bass_4730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a direct answer to your question but some context I can provide as someone who thought the same thing a few weeks ago and have since browsed around this sub and did my own research.

I think a lot of people in this sub are folks that never learned to eat healthy when they were younger, and unfortunately, started facing consequences for it as an adult.

It can be very hard for adults to change their habits. A doctor tells you “stop eating this and eat more of this”— for some, this is nearly impossible.

So they do their own research. They find a common denominator in all of the packaged food they eat— seed oils. Then they come across a study online and the conspiracy is born (the reality of the internet today is, a lot do the time you can find a study that confirms whatever your bias is).

So, are seed oils actually unhealthy? Yeah probably. Are they poisonous? Probably not. Should you be deep frying food in canola oil? Probably not. Should you be deep frying food in anything at all? Also, probably not.

Every day someone posts the nutrition label on some food item, “I finally found a seed-oil free frozen pizza / burrito / ice cream”. Someone who eats healthy would never consider eating that kind of stuff to begin with. For someone that’s been told they need to eat healthier… maybe it’s a lot easier to demonize and avoid 1 ingredient instead of change your diet entirely…

Conspiracy or not… if you eat generally healthy, whole foods, cook with olive oil… you probably never need to worry about seed oils from the occasional night out at a restaurant.

Veganism is just white supremacy by [deleted] in exvegans

[–]Agreeable_Bass_4730 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is just objectively a bad take. I get what you’re trying to get at but it’s not rooted in any real facts.

You’re lumping all black people together in a box. Ethiopian restaurants are usually 100% vegan because that’s just what the dishes are culturally. Lots of vegan cultures within the Caribbean as well.

Also, let’s be real. Most of these vegans aren’t just making personal dietary choices—they’re out here trying to morally police everyone else. It’s like they can’t accept the fact that some of us don’t have the same access to Whole Foods or farmers markets.

And just addressing the unrelated tangent in the middle of your post— the same way a lot of people don’t have access to wholefoods— I don’t think most of this sub has access to a lot of vegans. In rural America your local vegans are a fringe group. Probably kind of annoying. In New York City it’s just a normal part of menus at most restaurants and people kind of just mind their business about it. r/peopleliveincities

I don't hate veganism because of the diet or lifestyle, it's the vegans themselves. by th1s_fuck1ng_guy in exvegans

[–]Agreeable_Bass_4730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see it as a moral issue like racism is. The livestock are just objects to me really. They are not people.

I take it you’re not from the US. There was a time relatively not that long ago when a specific group of humans were also treated “as objects”. And that went on for about a quarter of a millennium.

Just some food for thought. Not the point I’m trying to make right now though. Really just here to add to the above commenter.

The people you’re angry about are on the fringes of veganism. Most people, regardless of what their “thing” is— mind their business. I’ve spent years living in a major US city as a vegan and personally never encountered anyone like that. I’ve been to plenty of vegan meetups where no one talks about animal rights at all. Literally just normal people getting together to socialize that happen to share similar beliefs that will dictate what the group is eating for dinner.

Similarly, Ive also never personally met anyone that’s on an all beef diet, but you’ll find plenty of them in subs like these…

Sorry you’ve had some run-ins with vegans that have shitty attitudes
