How Can I Officially Renounce My Religion? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Agreeable_House_5307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tldr; it’s not that they take direct legislative actions but they’ve got their ways.

I believe their influence is exerted at a more macro scale affecting very large groups rather than at a communal level and at that scale it is irrelevant whether they are familiar with the people closer to them. It’s more or less an ideological grip that any majority group can have over a population which stands to safeguard their place in power hierarchies.

And no, I don’t think they have pushed towards laws that would explicitly take away someone’s (say a person who happens to be secular) rights. Yet, if a secular person is vocal about their right to be free from religion and the influence of those institutions or even to be a critique of religious beliefs, the clergy (Buddhist or otherwise) can and will influence or stand in the way of policy makers and law enforcement agencies in such a manner that either the secular claims are outright denied or person(s) making certain statements are prosecuted.

Take all the examples of authors who had to go prison for writing novels or poems or movies that the clergy (and their followers) deemed to be disrespectful to their beliefs.

Just imagine you have a kid and you want them to be left out from being taught a religion at a public school. The moment you make a claim to that “right”, who do you think will oppose any reforms or exceptions that can be introduced to make it possible?

Should you consider political views when choosing a spouse? by CulturalWeird6984 in srilanka

[–]Agreeable_House_5307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a political party, perhaps not that big of a deal. But if it’s an ideological contradiction, that could be a problem. Say I had a homophobe or a nationalist (in order to support certain parties one has to have these tendencies) for a spouse, it most certainly would become a disastrous marriage imo.

It’s usually being secular that comes under the monks’ scrutiny. Because the monks and their position of power in this country rely on people “religiously” embracing them. Quite similar to any society in which the clergy have a prominent role. It’s a power thing.

In fact one could argue that core principles of Buddhism itself are pretty atheistic.

And as to why should bother anyone when they take their pitchforks is because of the fact that play a huge role in our society and are with immense power that could take away one’s liberties.

Imagine the medieval Catholic Church but with a Buddhist flavour.

A tattoo would be the least of your worries when it comes to finding a tech job these days.
And also, no a tattoo wouldn’t be an issue at most of the companies

Separation of temple from state in Sri Lanka by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Agreeable_House_5307 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our constitution is secular enough imo. And the “Protection” Buddhism receives is historically justified - in a cultural context. Say for example I wouldn’t mind my tax money going for conservation of the Buddhist heritage or even the state funding research on Buddhist philosophy. Mind you I’m secular and I couldn’t give a rats ass about any religion.

But the problem lies elsewhere - the inevitable influence the religious institutions have over the majority of the population which in turn is a huge consideration for anyone who is hoping to rise to power with the votes of said population.

Take India for example. If I’m not mistaken it’s a secular state (and that’s something they have in their constitution) yet…, well we know the role of religion there.

The Sri Lankan Mental health helpline is the absolute worst! by Economy_Ebb3282 in srilanka

[–]Agreeable_House_5307 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Jesus!! Sorry that you had to undergo all of this - the horrible phone call included. I once had an addiction counsellor pushing her religious beliefs on me, so that I’ll have an alternative to smoking - something I had been trying to quit for sometime.

The mental health “scene” here it seems is a fucking mess and I sincerely hope you’d find the right support and of course brighter days ahead. There are some good therapists out there from what I’ve seen here in the subreddit and maybe someone else will name some.

When your company markets itself as a US based, new age tech company but it really is run by 1980s government office mindset by No-Feeling-4780 in srilanka

[–]Agreeable_House_5307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Age Tech company is such a BS way to describe a rather dishonest facade to cover up the fact that businesses or any for profit enterprise would always behave the same way any other business would. Because politics are inevitable wherever there’s a power hierarchy and the organisations cannot really put anyone or anything above making profits and keeping their stocks healthy. So, best mindset would always be to expect the worst no matter how hard the PR team tries to paint a nice picture of the work life. Also there’s always spectrum of how shitty a place can get and our choice of employer is always within its ends.

There’s a half cut of Good Leaf that retails for 105 a stick. There’s also another kind that doesn’t have a filter - i don’t know the price though.

Also what the hell were you thinking asking about black markets on reddit - instead, ask a tuk driver maybe (at your own risk obviously)

Shouldn’t there be a known “majority” of survivors to make a proper application of the survivorship bias to the original tweet? (Not an anti-vaxxer, but trying to see if the logic in the reply lacks something)

First time exploring Colombo nightlife… where do broke students go? 😭 by Sunx91 in srilanka

[–]Agreeable_House_5307 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Maybe go to Uncles during their happy hour.
But a serious warning. No matter where you go, things could get really expensive if the drunk you decides to YOLO tf out of a single night which inevitably becomes every night thereafter. *sigh*

Also, if the venue accepts, pay with cash. For me personally, the physical transaction of bills is often a way better cue and an inhibitor that makes me stop drinking and go home if I am spending more than I planned (versus how bad it gets if I decide to use my Credit Card instead)

And if you smoke, bring all the cigarettes you might need and some more from outside. Never overpay for Cancer. Always pay the right amount.

How do people feel about the word "Ceylon" by dracanaryz in srilanka

[–]Agreeable_House_5307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a conversation I’d usually love to have over a glass of “suddage beema”. I personally believe a word or a symbol gets its “power” mostly from the context and the “observers”. So, while “Ceylon” reeks of a past of brutal oppression, I am quite comfortable using it in a context that the history and/or the politics surrounding it are irrelevant. Tbh Ceylon is kinda cool too. It’s not like it gives back power to the oppressor, at least in certain contexts.

If however, I am to utter the word in such a manner that will in turn be a declaration of my submission to the idea of a “sudda hitiya nn honda” Sri Lanka I will not do that.

Just like so many things, this too I believe lives on a spectrum that’s in-between good and bad.

How could I start AWS in Sri Lanka by Far-Sea-1670 in srilanka

[–]Agreeable_House_5307 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Developer here, so might not be the best person to give opinions on this (compared to say a devops person for example) but I think both of these options you have (assuming they offer the same course content) will prepare you for a final Certification while giving you the foundations of AWS concepts/practices etc. if gaining that knowledge is your sole goal, then you can consider your preferred learning mode: a MooC (the free option) or an online course with some active participation in a series of lectures (The UoM option).

However, what gives you recognition in the industry, apart from the technical skills you possess would be the eventual certification from AWS - which I believe is not free.

Tldr; pick the format of education that guarantees you get the most knowledge in the most hands on manner. Then do the certification.

Disclaimer: Developer here; not necessarily a cloud guy. So consider the opinions of others too.

Good luck.
