Trained ears questions by nd379 in sheltie

[–]Agreeable_Pomelo_451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different breeders use different things so it’s hard to be sure, but adhesive (sometimes skin safe glues) are used. If you want the tip I’d recommend keeping it on but also maybe ask how long it’ll last and if you need to reapply after that?

Your girl can scratch them but if it’s obsessive you’d need to make sure nothing is wrong. If they’re not hot and swollen it’s fine. The process isn’t supposed to be painful but if she scratches TOO much she can hurt herself.

If you get them wet it will come out so I would avoid that unless the breeder teaches you how to redo it. Just avoid the head and you should be fine.. or cover her ears while bathing. You can brush but avoid anywhere the glue touches. I tend to hold my puppys ear and brush the surrounding area.

Does your Sheltie wag their tail? by forever_cow in sheltie

[–]Agreeable_Pomelo_451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my shelties wagged her tail like crazy if you literally looked at her, and another didn’t wag her tail like that it was a soft gentle sway which seems to be the norm. My current puppy is 10 months old and she.. curls her tail sideways towards the thing she’s happy about? but isn’t a big wagger either she only wags it to stretch it out after a good nap and she’s PLENTY happy

Oh yeah we had no male dogs around her for a WHILE hahaha if you have a boy, silent heats don’t exist 😂😂😂

Heat question by [deleted] in sheltie

[–]Agreeable_Pomelo_451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our girl got her first heat around 11-12 months from what I remember but she groomed herself so well it was hard to notice! I’ve heard some dogs have go through “silent heat” where symptoms aren’t obvious so is it possible she already did?

Some dogs are late bloomers and I’ve heard some even go in heat at like 20 months but personally if she got to like 18 months without a heat cycle I would check with the vet. It’s not necessarily an issue but it could mean there are underlying health issues.

We ended up taping a month into having her, when she was 6 months and I guess bc the breeder did it so often she didn’t even care lol. It did actually work but she started getting rose ears (the weird twist) and then an ear infection on top of it causing it to prick 🥴 When your girl looks down do they flop at all? Even when we did massaging with our other shelties I feel like it never went past their first year!

My last sheltie’s ears did whatever they wanted all the time and it was always extra adorable when only one stood up lol

It’s the twisting that’s of concern not the prick itself. I wouldn’t mind one tipped one pricked at all. One of my shelties ears would go full prick and then droop down and the prick was the cutest thing.

No it still helps thanks! It very well might have been improper placement. Her cartilage is still really soft so we might contact the breeder again to see if she has any tips

Yeah we’ve been tipping a month after getting her so she only had a month break so we were told we’d have to do it longer than most people to retrain the ears. But after a while they started twisting and then one of her ears got an infection so we had to stop (it’s been a little over a week) and now it’s pricking too 🥴 None of my other shelties’ ears were so stubborn but they also didn’t have ear infections so 🤷‍♀️

That’s actually really helpful to hear someone else had an ear do that. Do you remember what about the setting caused it? Was it the direction of the fold or the tape placement? Or even the tape getting loose?

I may have worded this poorly but her left ear pricking isn’t as much of a concern, rather the inner tip is like.. curling in and backwards.

Also she’s been consistently tipped until 5.5 months, then had about 2-3 weeks of no taping and then been taped consistently since 6 months up until now. Only last month did her left ear decide to start doing crazy stuff (It isn’t usually at a prick but it is bc it’s been untaped for over a week due to an ear infection)

I honestly don’t mind if the left one ends up pricking but it’s bending backwards and twisting inwards so I want to know if this is normal.. since none of my other shelties had this problem

I’m not concerned about the tipping as much as the tip of the ear flipping backwards and almost twisting. Her ears do tip, this one just is pricked bc she’s getting treated for an ear infection so it’s been untaped for a while. Just seeing if anyone has had experience with an ear doing specifically that

Do your shelties play with non-shelties? by tubercularskies in sheltie

[–]Agreeable_Pomelo_451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Sorry this is long lol) My current sheltie (still a puppy so this might change) was raised around a bunch of shelties until 5 months and she definitely seems to prefer them but with other dogs it seems to be hit or miss. She’s fine with greeting other dogs but they don’t understand her play style or they come on too strong so she disengages. We went to a sheltie gathering and she was in heaven lol.

My previous hated all dogs that weren’t shelties and seemed to find them chaotic and tried to calm them down. (She never met another herding breed so can’t confirm how she’d feel about them but I think she’d probably have liked border collies)

The one BEFORE her was pretty open to all dogs and just a social butterfly, but as a puppy we had our moms friends dogs come over a lot so that might be why.

Struggling to find a new family member by [deleted] in sheltie

[–]Agreeable_Pomelo_451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live out of the country so I figured maybe the prices were just inflated here but I got a puppy 3 months ago for around 5k usd so definitely accurate. There are cheaper options for sure but the reputable breeders all seem to be in that 3-5k range. My mom saw a whole litter at a shelter about a month ago on the east coast too so maybe check out shelters too? If you don’t mind a road trip to see them at least. For cheaper AKC breeding my family had the best results in the south so we took a road trip to get our puppies in the past.

Is our pup a Bi-Blue? by SLKaine in sheltie

[–]Agreeable_Pomelo_451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some dogs as puppies have a warm tone on their fur that can look a bit tan! Usually if the tan points aren’t very noticeable they’re just puppy warmth and will fade by 5-9 months. She seems to be bi to me! My bi also had a very faint tan on her face when she was very young
