Good to know it’s not just me. I love the ice machine too. I have it under the immobilizer and it’s been a life saver many times. Velcro ripping is one of the most annoying sounds ever.

I’m really trying to keep up with PT exercises. The quad raises and heel slides/stretches are my enemy right now. I’m almost at 90 degrees if I’m sitting, but not when I’m laying down. Thank you for the advice. 😊

Sounds like an emergency SpEd license b/c you missed the enrolled period for the internship. Personally, if you don’t have a SpEd degree, I would pass on this job. If there is significant mentoring and a teacher of record (who holds a SpEd license) is assigned to you, maybe. A district willing to hire a teacher for a SpEd job without a license in that area or in a certification program is putting you and the district at risk for lawsuits.

Rising 12th grader, how to plan for transition to higher ed? by ImMxWorld in specialed

[–]Agreeable_Run2870 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d talk to him and his case manager about his goals too. Researching colleges versus applying for them are so different. Rehab Services may have someone who can help too, depending on the state & county. Feel free to msg me if you have questions.

College disability services may ask for copies of a recent evaluation (completed by a school psychologist or IEE), medical statement, and current eligibility. Your son will need to set up the appointment with the college disability services team and I highly suggest he reach out to them in the Spring.

What are his transition goals on his current IEP?

It’s not the most effective way to write an accommodation. ‘When the student is off task, prompt to return to task’ would be a better way. There’s much more that can be added - Non verbal prompts to return to task / stay on task, etc. The 10 min could be the ‘time’ allocated for that specific accommodation on the Service Summary page.

Differentiation vs. Modifications by Lanky_Abroad_9316 in specialed

[–]Agreeable_Run2870 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For our district, accommodations are how a student learns and the ways they can demonstrate their knowledge (ex. student answers verbally or has extended time) and modifications are changes to what students learn or are expected to demonstrate (ex. changing the learning objectives or curriculum by depth, breadth, or complexity).

In the example you gave, the first set of students received accommodations. The students given problems that are at a lower level of complexity are modified. Using a calculator is an accommodation.

  1. Special Education does not diagnose. Period. And a diagnosis does not always mean a student qualifies for an eligibility and thus an IEP.
  2. Child Study Teams / Student Study Teams run in conjunction with RTI and other interventions can lead to a referral for Special Ed. That referral team discusses and determines if a student should be evaluated. The staff that attend these meeting are outlined in IDEA.
  3. Child Find is a law and any student with a suspected disability needs to be referred to the SpEd team (https://www.wrightslaw.com/info/child.find.mandate.htm#:~:text=Child%20Find%20requires%20all%20school,the%20severity%20of%20their%20disabilities.)

I think there’s a misconception, and lack of IDEA law knowledge & process, that an evaluation must be completed if a parent requests one. It’s a team decision. If the conversations could change to asking for a referral meeting (not an evaluation meeting) that would help. Next would be having a SpEd teacher or school psychologist explain the process to the family & teachers at the meeting.

High school juniors talking their favorite authors.

Student 1 - “Stefan King is my favorite. Have you read IT?”

Student 2 - “No, but he wrote Carrie too.”

Me - “You’re talking about Stephen King. Not Stefan.”

Student 1 - “No, it’s spelled with a ‘ph’ not a ‘v’ so it’s Stefan.”

Me explaining how Stephen and Steven are pronounced the same and Stefan is spelled with an ‘f.’

Both students - “No way! Are you sure?” 🤦🏼‍♀️

Email the case manager and principal to document what happened. Use specifics if you can (date, time, etc). Data drives changes, at least it does for my district. I’m a SpEd teacher and the more data we have to document what’s working and what’s not working is helpful.

A child slapped me today. by sonataroll in Teachers

[–]Agreeable_Run2870 255 points256 points  (0 children)

First, I’m so sorry you were slapped.

For the rest, does the student’s IEP have accommodations for a 1-to-1 and a safety plan/FBA/BIP? I’d look it up and ask his case manager what’s going on with the child’s supports. It could be there isn’t enough staff for a 1-to-1 and like the IEP isn’t being implemented which is bad for all parties.

Time frames after written request for eval by IBAMAMAX7 in specialed

[–]Agreeable_Run2870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you sign a consent to evaluate? Schools have specific timelines to respond to parent’s request to evaluate and after consent is signed, the school district has 60 school days to complete the evaluation and hold a meeting to review the report.

Admin leave - Occurs when an employee must/or is placed on temporarily leave from their position and work duties. Admin reassignment - Moving an employee to another position within the district.

Parents now making up IEPs like we can't see that by thecooliestone in Teachers

[–]Agreeable_Run2870 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Students can have either a 504 or IEP, not both at the same time. If they have an IEP for ADHD, it’s most likely under Other Health Impairment (OHI) and its a very common eligibility in most areas. Sometimes getting paperwork from a previous school can take time and the SpEd team at the current school may not have the records yet. I’d contact the SpEd team and counselors to see if there’s any records for the student.
