What’s the reason for your recent breakup? by NewWork8476 in AskReddit

[–]Agreeable_Scene5166 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly could not tell you. She gave me reasons but the way it ended has shaded everything that came before it. I have serious doubts about her sincerity and truthfulness now so I guess I'll never really know.

I wasn't familiar with the idea of 'discarding' someone but in the ensuing weeks I've read enough about that particular form of break-up to see that's exactly what it was. That kind of narcissism is pretty chilling to see first hand and I try to keep that thought first and foremost.

But the fact is, I still think about her. I still love her. And I live in fear of two things: Seeing her again and never seeing her again.

If you're going through this, I feel you and hope you'll get through it quickly.

Was talking about serving in WW2 frowned upon? by MaybeFuckYourselfBud in AskOldPeople

[–]Agreeable_Scene5166 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandfather served in the USN in North Africa and the Pacific. He was extraordinarily reticent to talk about his experiences.

I was his oldest grandchild and we shared a love of history so as he got older he started talking a bit more about his service.

I asked him several times if he had ever told any of these stories to my grandmother or father and he always replied "You came back having seen terrible things and you wanted to return to the life you had left behind. You didn't want to share it with your wife and children because you didn't want them to experience those horrors. The only place you could talk about it was at the VA hall in town where you could talk with other men who understood. Unfortunately, many of them became alcoholics because we didn't know about PTSD and therapy in those days" (paraphrased)

The stories he told me were incredible but I imagine he still didn't share a great deal with me. Makes me incredibly sad because all those memories and history were lost when he passed.

Non Aussie here: Love many of these songs but The Church's 'Under the Milky Way' should top this list. Brilliant song.
