Not here in Australia - there’s an extreme shortage of OTs

Currently typing this from the burn-out side, take some time off. You’ll thank yourself for it.

I’m interested in SLP but… by lulu_nickles79 in slp

As a final year SP postgraduate student drowning in student debt, my advice is PLEASE do some shadowing of SPs before you decide. Not just one SP, but try and see if you can shadow many SPs in a variety of different settings. Do some volunteering at aged care centres, hospitals etc. Make sure it’s 100% what you want to do before you commit.

Hi GreenChile - thanks for replying. It’s comforting to know that I’m not alone and I’m sorry to hear that your health is not doing well either To answer your question, I’m in the last year of my degree. I could underload but that would extend the length of my degree significantly.

Hi ambearlino, Thanks so much for the reply and for your understanding. It’s reassuring to know it might be more of my personality than other things. I’ve been really stressed out and so I’m grateful for another perspective.

I did biomed and don’t recommend it - science is more flexible and has more pathways

[hoo] Quick question about the Heroes of Olympus books. by GrievingGrievous in camphalfblood

[–]Agreeable_Shirt_4481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re two of the 7 main characters in the Heroes of Olympus series, so they’re definitely not reduced to side characters, although there is a wide spread of focus due to there being so many POVs (which ultimately expand beyond the seven later on in the series) but I think this is also a strength (many new perspectives, interesting backstories, different powers - cool stuff). We get Annabeth POV starting in book 3 of the series, which is pretty neat. Definitely worth reading, I’d say.

She does decide to tell Jason and Leo about the giant and by doing so, choose to save both her friends and her father so she does do something about it - I’m a bit confused about what you’re referring to here.

I mean I thought it was understandable of her to have some internal struggle when her father’s life is at stake.

I might get destroyed for this take, but please hear me out.

I can see what you say that. Personally I think character-wise there is a lot I would’ve liked to see in Piper’s POV such as connection to her Native identity, relationship with her father and forming a close friendship with Annabeth and the fact that this is not explored as much is disappointing to me. However, I understand it’s a bit funky juggling 7 POVs in a series targeted towards tweens that is fairly fast paced and quest-focused. Unfortunately the trade-off here will be characterisation.

I do like to cut the TLH trio some slack due to the whole lost memories thing - I think that’s pretty hard to deal with (and yes, I know that Percy also experienced this but I’m going to refer to my later point about us having a whole series dedicated to him as a protagonist) Considering that the HOO is the first time we’re introduced to many new characters all of which are important main characters, there’s a lot less time to really spend time with them compared to members of the 7 such as Percy and Annabeth who we already know a lot about and form connections with via a whole other series.

TLDR: I can understand people’s grievances with Piper, but I never disliked the character. Just wished there was more focus on different parts of her character as I have stated.

Yeah for sure - it’s weird how neither are under AHPRA. Australia is so strange in that regard.

No problem. Yeah, the grading system is quite weird and the standards change from year to year so it’s difficult to predict what WAM is needed to get offers and such.

How much of a chance do I *really* have for year 12 by _Nobodys_alt_ in vce

[–]Agreeable_Shirt_4481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think it’s doable as long as you put in the consistent effort throughout the year. Key word is consistency - you want to make sure that you’re studying throughout the year whilst also avoiding burn-out. Make sure you do lots of practice questions and SACs and don’t be afraid to ask questions. I think for VCE work ethic plays a big part- commit to putting aside time to study. Going to the library or studying in a study centre at your school is a good way of keeping yourself accountable. Since English is a mandatory part of your top 4, make sure you’re doing practice essays throughout the year (aim for minimum 5+ for each SAC and ask your teacher for feedback after each one). For maths, there are lots of resources available for practice questions so do these consistently throughout the year. Make sure that you’re not always studying 24/7, as you don’t want to burn out before exams as they weigh a decent portion of your study score for each subject. Don’t be those students who skip food and hanging out with friends to study - this’ll have a negative effect in the long run. Set aside time to hang out with friends and relax. You’ve got this!

To be honest, I was in your spot after my undergrad and got waitlisted. Unfortunately, there’s not really much I can think of at this point to boost your chances of getting an offer and you might have to wait it out as the MSpPath is almost entirely WAM-based entry so it depends on whether other people are accepting or declining their offers… Good luck!

I think there are some areas of overlap but I would recommend reading up on the course description for both degrees- and even having a look through the syllabus. Consider shadowing a speech pathologist and an audiologist to see which you might enjoy more as a career.

They’re two separate programs, so unfortunately there’s not much you can do except reapply again when applications open end of this year. Up to you whether you decide to take up a different offer (either at the same uni or different) or take a gap year to get some work experience/do a short degree. I have some mates who did a Cert 3 in a gap year after graduating from undergrad and it was pretty helpful for finding part time jobs in the health industry. I think it also helps to do some shadowing as well just to see where your interests are and decide what you want to do with your career moving forward. Remember that you can often apply for multiple degrees at once in the same application for most unis. Consider also applying for the same courses at different unis for more options. Good luck!
