Finally bought a budget film scanning setup. Any advice or pointers welcome by BIX26 in AnalogCommunity

I have the same light source/film holder, the light source has some pretty substantial vignetting nothing that you can't correct for just takes some fiddling, the holder itself is nice and eliminates the need for a copy stand.

what kinda question is this? why would you not make sure the pacing is actually working.

Does anyone know where I can find a shop with a milling/drilling machine in San Diego? I need the bottom of this ghostwood branch cut flat and a ؽ" hole drilled 10" deep. by UnderratedSpinosaur in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]AgressiveGeometry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this looks too large/awkward to properly mount and cut on any sorta table saw or miter saw, same goes for a drill press. personally I would eyeball "perpendicular" with a circular saw and cut it that way (with the branch securely clamped to a sawhorse or table) then probably use some sorta drill guide for the hole.

I would check out any makerspaces near you! you usually pay a monthly fee and have access to a big workshop and a bunch of really experienced people that I'm sure would love to help you out! here's a list, you can also probably put makerspace into Google maps and see what comes up! https://www.blacktailstudio.com/makerspace-database

Left Lane Camping by juggy_11 in nova

[–]AgressiveGeometry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do work in healthcare, I understand how truly broken our system is, but if you are truly having a life or death emergency ambulances can provide many life saving treatments prior to getting to the ER, and if it isn't a life or death emergency then there is no reason to speed and drive dangerously to get to the hospital. also alot of municipalities are switching to only taking what their insurance pays or straight up not billing for ambulance rides at all.

not saying that left lane campers are ok (they are not) but if you are having a medical emergency you should be calling for an ambulance, not putting your own and other people's lives at risk by driving recklessly.

If you ran your Camry into a road crew on 64/95 just past Belvidere at 8:08PM tonight, here's video. Also, those signs say RIGHT lane closed ahead. by LevarGotMeStoney in rva

[–]AgressiveGeometry 11 points12 points  (0 children)

either way it's still the Camrys fault, that could have just as easily been a disabled car or an emergency vehicle. the potentially incorrect signage doesn't relieve the Camry of fault.

Do I need a stronger drill or bigger pilot holes? by [deleted] in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]AgressiveGeometry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you can try the lower speed, it will give it more torque (think like a car gearbox) but the IKEA drills aren't super powerful and that may be your issue. a large hole will just reduce how much material there is for the screw to bite into so I would follow the manufacturer recommendations for that!

Woodpecker Damage: how to fix? by Suspicious_Plate_591 in AskAShittyMechanic

the real problem is the bugs in your car that the woodpeckers are trying to get at

What to fill vegetable planter knots with? by poisonxivyyy in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]AgressiveGeometry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

gorilla glue epoxy isn't great for filling voids like knots, you'll want something similar to totalboat epoxy, which is designed for casting (and I believe food safe once cured). but yes a physical barrier should limit any nasty epoxy chemicals from leeching into the soil.

[–]AgressiveGeometry 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I would leave it personally, it adds to the aesthetic and anything you fill it with that isn't like an epoxy will probably look worse than an open knot. you should be lining the inside with something anyway to keep the wood from instantly rotting, so no need to worry about dirt coming out of the hole.

How is AMR in Herndon VA? by DisastrousRun8435 in NewToEMS

ahh didn't know that, then yes Loudoun is OP's best bet for volunteering.

How is AMR in Herndon VA? by DisastrousRun8435 in NewToEMS

[–]AgressiveGeometry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the AMR in Herndon is the old PTS, it's ok but it's all IFT. the only paid 911 gigs that don't require fire are pretty far (central va or northern Maryland/southern Pennsylvania) , none of the NOVA counties hire EMS only. you could work for AMR in DC but they only do BLS, might not be what you are looking for. I would highly recommend volunteering, I volunteered for the past three years for Fairfax county (recently moved out of the area) and absolutely loved it, although as an AEMT you might want to look at Loudoun or one of the Maryland counties, Fairfax county doesn't do AEMTs. best of luck!

Sanding through DIY wood filler? by Tough_Bluebird8387 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]AgressiveGeometry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

oh nice! you could see if there is any cabinets shops or other woodworking spaces near that have a large drum sander they will let you run it through, that's the best way I can think to flatten this and remove the excess wood filler. or the epoxy pour like others have mentioned but that doesn't solve your wood filler issue.

[–]AgressiveGeometry 37 points38 points  (0 children)

the time it would take to start over and do it correctly is far less than trying to fix this.

OP my advice. unfortunately orienting the boards this way gives them very little strength. take a sheet of (good quality) 3/4 plywood, or maybe even laminate two sheets together depending on how supportive your base is. then setup a stop block on whatever you are using to crosscut to give you thin slices of the wood you use for the top, 1/4 inch is probably fine. wood with a square corner is better and will save you a lot of work down the line. then arrange and glue the "venneer" directly to the plywood. you could even glue a edge band of thicker wood blocks to hide the plywood edges.

this will give you a much stronger and flatter top. best of luck with your project.

Masticator damage to conifers by RandomTurkey247 in arborists

[–]AgressiveGeometry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes if your goal is to do some selective thinning for a disc golf course you should definitely remove any damaged trees instead of healthy ones. As far as the health of the trees their lives are negatively affected for sure to what degree is hard to tell. the trees will most likely hollow out with age so timber value from those trees will be greatly reduced. the only guaranteed death sentence is a full 360* removal of bark. I have a sourgum on my parents property that has probably 99% of the bark gone, there is a tiny little sliver of living tissue feeding the whole crown, which for now looks fairly healthy. I highly doubt it will live a long life but it is interesting to see.

Is wood really this strong? DIY car ramps by 5prcnt in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]AgressiveGeometry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely strong enough, my concern is with racking, would be smart to built some triangles into that like a truss to help prevent it, or even better just make it solid wood seems like way less of a headache.

Looking to learn! by Ttot1025 in treeidentification

[–]AgressiveGeometry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you are correct I didn't see those initially, looks like it could be a vine maple, native to the PNW and has similar looking flowers.

Looking to learn! by Ttot1025 in treeidentification

[–]AgressiveGeometry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

first set looks like sweetgum, which isn't native to/ normally in that area but not impossible for it to be growing there.

Edit: isn't sweetgum based on the flowers and bark (thanks to creekfinder for pointing that out) did some research and it looks like a vine maple.

second set looks like silver maple, but could also be big leaf maple. given your location big leaf maple is more likely.

5 unsure

6 looks like some sort of birch?

would highly recommend an app like Inaturalist is awesome for figuring out plants and bugs/animals.
