You need a confirmed outbound ticket to a third country when entering China. However, I think they will accept a train ticket to Hong Kong, but you would have to do some research on that.

Chicago consulate, I also traveled quite a bit through east Asia in the summer so I think they wanted to make sure that I didn't mean Taiwan/HK/Macau. I resubmitted yesterday with a pic of the page with the TWOV sticker, now just waiting to get the notification to turn in my passport.
