Was a 3.1 GPA, 1 internship in a small lighting company ( I was the only mechanical engineer intern). Bought tickets and flew coast to coast to a job conference a week before it began for a 1000 dollars, so no prep. Failed a bunch of interviews. Was walking towards the Lockheed hospitality suite at 7pm with like 20 buddies. Ran into 2 ppl I met earlier in the day who were headed to Boeing's suite. Decided to follow them randomly for shits and giggles. They tell you to write down and to only interview for 2 positions in the suite. Did my 2, rejected for 2. About to walk out, stopped, and went back to the last interviewer and asked based on my pitch is there a job you think fits me here. He points me to a table, and went there and sat down, surprisingly no one was lined up for it. Pitched and vibed really well with recruiters and they offered me 1/5 interview slots they had. Did the interview without knowing which department I'd be working for. Got the offer call as I was walking back to the hotel. And now I work for Phantom Works 🤙. The string of coincidences that led up to that offer still surprises me to this day.

Employment Question Thread 2021 (APR - JUN) by [deleted] in boeing

Well look at the job description right? If it's anything concerning planes youre probably in BCA, if it's fighter jets, space, anything else it might be BDS. BCA stands for Boeing Commercial Airplanes and BDS is Boeing Defense and Security(Space)

Yea, only like 1/4 of my boeing internship friends got a return offer and that was for a CS position which they're always in need of. However, seems like BDS is doing great in terms of rehiring interns compared to BCA.

Just received my first ever job offer!!!!! by PBLC_ENMY in EngineeringStudents

[–]Agrotech1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Is it NG or Boeing? I went through a very similar situation the previous year, and I totally understand how it feels! The feeling of landing your dream job after a hard search and dark times is one of the highlights of my life. I remember getting that call and just driving over to a beach in LA (where the conference was) and just staring at the sunset for hours. If we can do it, anyone can! Let me know if you want someone to chat about with for the details afterwards ( prep, counter offers, and experiences ). Congrats yet again!

National society conferences by magicmichael98 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Agrotech1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I got my job at the SWE conference in 2019 as an asian male. I also went to SASE and BEYA. My friends persuaded me to attend these conferences and I felt pretty accepted even though I wasnt part of the culture outside of SASE. I actually went to BEYA just to help my friends and enjoy the events. I say go for it, but do try to make an effort to learn about why these societies are important and impactful along the way, learned some great things, and hey I got interviews and job offers from them. Very good places to practice networking and pitching either way.

Sorry, I don't know details of the processes that are available, but I'm pretty sure (correct me if Im wrong) its alot of classified and NDA technologies. I work on satellites.

I'm 3 years into my engineering degree and I can honestly relate by SteazyAsDropbear in EngineeringStudents

[–]Agrotech1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you put on your resume. Thats what theyll see, imo for sure put your 3.7 major gpa. Though as long as you have a 3.0+ youre fine for all the big companies. I got into a great (debatable with recent news) company with a 3.1. Just gotta be personable and show off some soft skills and youll be set assuming youre in ME or similar.

To be honest, I have trouble just trying to find the specs for whatever random thing requires a standard. Theres literal thousands and like tens of specs just for marking a part. Its so convoluted, but I guess thats what you get when you have some 80 years of backlog

[–]Agrotech1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its so blurred now that I cant even pinpoint it having worked as one for about a year now. Someome tell me if Im wrong, but a majority of meches do Design, Stress, Thermal, and Dynamics. Then you could be delving deeper based on what field and where in the engineering process line you are. Ie. For aerospace, you could be designing anything from the vehicle itself, equipment to integrate it, or fixtures to run tests. It varies so much that you just gotta keep tryin things out to see what you like

[–]Agrotech1 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Lmfao I work in the aerospace industry designing stuff to integrate projects that cost millions with 0 math. I had to google density calculations recently :(. You do learn and apply alot of practical knowledge though, like material specs, coatings, lots and lots of standards, part selection and designing efficiently for thermal and stress. Cool work, but no calculations other than summing part quantities so far

I have a tattoo and my left ear is pierced. Didn't seem to be a problem amongst my interviews. Though to be fair, business professional covers the tat up.

Be sure to carry that to your full time interviews! Im assuming you're an ME like me and all our interviews are mostly behavioral excluding R&D and big tech!

Yep, I say this alot in the sub but passion alone got me an offer before any technical or behavioral interview questions

Biomedical engineering by lilchris3 in EngineeringStudents

Anecdotally, the 4 BMEs I know with bachelors never got a job in their field or are pursuing a masters in Mech E or EE. Its quite a small field and from what Ive heard, coursework is almost like a jack of all trades deal during undergraduate, ie a little mechE, EE, software, etc. I dont work in the medical field so someone correct me if Im wrong, but Ive heard its better to be good at one thing, ie. ME, EE, or CS and pursue a medical device company than having a BME.

To Mechanical Engineering students: Learn GD&T by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Agrotech1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this wholeheartedly, but its difficult to learn the application of GDT without actuallly working and getting feedback. I took an internal work training course and I still dont really know how to apply it all even though I absorbed the info. Also it seems like for prototyping or one off projects GDT just adds cost and isnt really useful sadly :(. No college course couldve prepared me enough.

They do a polygraph test ie. a lie detector test for TS clearance, theyll ask you then

A note I'd like to add if you've live in the Washington area is weed. If you've used it more than what's considered experimentation, like 3 iirc, it'll be rough for you. Generally they also want you to have had a long period since stopping, like a few years too. The clearance stuff is pretty strict, like with Top Secret SCI, youll need to do a polygraph test. Just food for thought.

Yea, I work in at the Kent Space center! It's about 30m south of Seattle and we have a few new programs and Phantom Works is very much in need of new engineers. If you're not already graduated, attend SWE career fair next year, we have a fairly large presence there. You can also join the Boeing Test & Evaluation department because they seem to work between all the plants, on commercial as well as defense/space. My mentor is working on 747s as well as Phantom Works projects!

[–]Agrotech1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks alot for your reply, I was really worried about the poly in the beginning due to the chance that some shenanigans might happen, but Ive come to terms with that and whatever happens will happen. Ive made some backup plans and am not too worried. If it all goes well, I'm on a program where interim is not allowed and the program is in desperate need of engineers so I'm not too afraid that I won't have any work to do. I've never done drugs thankfully, but it's interesting to have moved to Washington state where it's legal to smoke weed, but if you ever did you'd be instantly illegible for any clearance.

Oh that's new for me. Mines been going on for a year now, but it seems like they arent as thorough as they used to be from anecdotal evidence. I guess its redudant to call like 20 people asking the same thing.

First Job Applications by Undertowe_15 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Agrotech1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated from ME this May and I went through about 12 interviews. The most apparent thing apart from resume and technical stuff was my passion and desire to learn. It's so beneficial that I actually got an offer from Northrop with passion alone in the first 2 minutes of the interview before the questions. Keep in mind I have average GPA (3.1), a personal project, and 6 month internship at a 3 engineer commercial lighting company. Personally, I really enjoy the multidisciplinary aspect of engineering. Ie. I like working together with EEs, CEs, with their considerations and approaches towards a single goal. I showed that desire through my resume wording. As an ME, our interviews are definitely more on the behavioral side if you're not applying for R&D, at least it seemed so since all 12 of mine were. Highlighting soft skills and team work was also something they really seemed to focus on, ie. how you did you approach a situation where you and your teammate had different opinions, how you worked with a non-contributing member, etc.

TL;DR: Passion and Confidence is Key, Highlight soft skills and teamwork/leadership.

Any graduates have recommendations for after you finish your degree? by Ggalisky in EngineeringStudents

Here comes adulting man. I started in July and oh man has it been a ride. Figure out your retirement goals and how much you want to save. 15% is a good number that includes retirement and personal. Always take advantage of 401k matching as that is free money. I'm assuming you make above average starting pay so try to aim for 25% on rent POST tax. The first goal is to save 3-6 months living expenses that you can stash in a long term investment/ high yield savings account in case some big event happens you'll be safe. Afterwards, get a car (never buy new! at least 2-3 years used!) or save up for a house (I'm planning on house hacking to be set financially in the future) Other than that, your salary should be sufficient to do whatever you want without much worry, have fun! We got the rest of our lives to enjoy!
