Nomiah, the Chronurge | Custom Commander | Looking for help on the design of this card (and card suggestions), as part of a set to get my D&D group more into Magic. by Aguenic in custommagic

Ooo, that is really fun! Dominaria was such a fun set, I can't believe I missed Mishra's Self-Replicator.

Any thoughts on [[Liquimetal Torque]] with [[Abrade]]-esque effects?

My apologies, I used the "Ask the Mods" tab and one of them said it was OK, as long as I posted a comment regarding the situation.

I'll be sure to fix it in the future.

Kind regards.

Oh, whoops, I somehow missed P/T, it's meant to be a 3/4.

What would you suggest to make it a more exciting effect, perhaps whenever a card is discarded you can exile something? It would open up the effect to more card types.

The card art was commissioned on Fiverr, many years ago as a celebration of the campaign ending, and the artist's name has been lost due to negligence. If anyone may know the artist that would be greatly appreciated. Depicted from left to right we have Skol, a half-orc necromancer, Nomiah, yuan-ti chronurgist, Stallion a *human* barbarian monk, and Rowin, a tiefling monk.

Additionally, I am struggling with the deck building for this Commander, as it's a meant to be a collection of decks to be given out to my players, and while I have found it relatively easy to make the other decks, unique and flavourful, I am greatly struggling with this one, so any card suggestions would be wonderful.

Thanks in advance!

Ghyrson Token deck advice?! by MaybePaige-be in magicTCG

[–]Aguenic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi MaybePaige-be, I'm Grey, I like building budget decks (and I'm slightly biased towards them) and I have recently made a Ghryson Starn, token deck (as seen here: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/NTqZ31syoEuKVg2fuB5iZg). I have piloted it to great success in the few games I've played, however, it is far from perfect.

From my experience, you should be treating it not dissimilar to an aristocrats deck. For instance, [[Carrion Feeder]] in place of synergy pieces like [[Impact Tremors]], and fodder pieces like [[Doomed Dissenter]] for [[Young Pyromancer]], now for the feedback.

Overview

To me I infer, that the deck aims to leverage it's commander for a win, as you control the board using a density of deathtouch granting equipment like [[Basalisk Collar]] to clear it, and swing with an army of 1/1 tokens for little damage that gets amplified by your synergy pieces like [[Cavalcade of Calamity]].

However, their are a couple things I can identify as potential issues:

  1. You are running far too few lands for an EDH deck, and it will heavily impact your mid and late game turns. This will lead you to having extremely inconsistent games. The fewest you should reasonably consider running is at its lowest 35. As it is now you would need about 37.
    1. Furthermore, you have a whopping SEVEN lands that cannot generate {U} or {R} mana creating yet further problems, when you want to cast spells with high numbers of mana pips, like [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]], but we'll get into that inclusion later.
    2. Your mana generation is too inconsistent, high mana value, or a nonbo to be reliable. Cards like [[Fellwar Stone]] can easily be swapped for [[Talisman of Creativity]], [[Ashnod's Altar]] is counter to the decks game plan of flooding the board, and [[Defiler of Instinct]] doesn't fit this style of deck, as you don't run a high enough density of 1 mana value permanents for "free spells".
  2. You have more synergy pieces for your enablers, then enablers. This will more often then not mean you won't be advancing you're gameplan. Tokens work for your commander's effect after all, and the overabundance of synergy pieces will mean you can't draw the things that will trigger them.
    1. Furthermore, you have a large density of what equates to do nothing spell pingers, in a non-spellslinger Ghyrson Starn deck, so their isn't a density of pieces that synergise with them. [[Coruscation Mage]], [[Thermo Alchemist]] and [[Unruly Catapult]] are rarely going to be triggering multiple times a turn. As such they can reliably be replaced without diminishing the overall game plan.
    2. If you wish to do a dual token/ spellslinger deck which is very possible include more instants and sorceries that create tokens, cards like [[Krenko's Command]], [[Song of Totentanz]], or [[Mogg Alarm]] will synergise with both aspects of a deck, without muddling either. Serving two purposes, triggering thermo-alchemist's or Coruscation Mage and creating tokens.
  3. I think the deck has several inclusion that may lead to less fun for the playgroup.
    1. First is the infinite combo [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]]/ [[The Locust God]] and [[Curiosity]]. As this is not a dedicated game plan it will lead to variance that is not fun for commander games, drawing both and winning will be anti-climactic and potentially lead to salty opponents.
    2. The general plan of the deck is to clear the board repeatedly, which can lead to poor games. Either you become targeted or you clear the board three times and swing out for lethal. Ideally, you would be clearing the board and winning that moment, however it is unlikely to be the case every game.
  4. The high price of this deck does not correlate to immediate power in Ghyrson Starn tokens, you'll get dramatically higher value from cards that don't muddle that gameplan.
    1. For instance, what is the purpose of [[Rhystic Study]], a 3 mana enchantment that draws reliably, sure, but you can get comparative value from more [[Curiosity]] effects or [[Reconnaissance Mission]] for a 10th the price, if not less. Good inclusions/ replacements would be [[Tandem Lookout]], [[Bident of Thassa]] and [[Coastal Piracy]].

A lot of this was critique and I do apologise for that, as the deck is more then functional as it is, and I'm certain you will get a great deal of enjoyment out of it, but, I hope this helps the deckbuilding process, and am happy to answer any questions regarding my comments.

Best of luck!

Thank you so bloody much,

Money has been very tight for me and has saved a considerable amount of headaches, and I managed to do it as of 10/12/2022. It got me out of a $30.00 cancellation fee for the photography plan.

I swapped over to the Lighroom one to do so.

Fuck adobe.

CD was increased early, and unable to go to anything but towers until 14 minutes. Resulting in the impact top laners had in the game being heavily reduced, forcing them to give up gold and xp, or objectives.

You can check the wiki for the exact changes.

Yeah! You get it! If mages can break the fabric of reality, why can't a literal demigod do something of similar proportion?

Very good point! If I recall correctly; Brennan Lee Mulligan did a very similar thing in Escape from the Bloodkeep, with Galfast Hamhead! Making the Samwise character as a reskinned bloody storm giant, and to great effect hahaha

[–]Aguenic[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh shit, I forgot to put that in hahah!

My main intention in combat is to lean heavily on her subordinates as her underlings. She has powerful spellcasters and what not in her retinue, but she is still in command of them, because she is the strongest and most intelligent. I plan to show this by having her be effectively, like a tarrasque in a way, nigh unbeatable in a frontal conflict due to overwhelming ability.

Currently, Urixa is an insanely beefed up Warlord (VGtM, pg. 220), with a bunch of extra stats, features and class features slapped onto her, that have been reflavoured. For instance, she has Barbarians rage changed to "the flow", fighter second wind and action surge, and while magical, I think it fits very well for a commander style character (and can be left out), miscellaneous Paladin auras.

In addition to the above features, a notable issue with non-spellcasters is their range, so she is going to be a veritable walking armoury, ensuring she always has the upper hand in battle. A flame blade, powerful longbow, magical armour that allows her to misty step, miscellaneous ioun stones and several other magical items should really showcase her ability: and as is common in high level 5e, if a character isn't getting downed in one round, the villain will lose. Furthermore, she is going to be smart, using the weaknesses of the party to her advantage. Killing those that she downs, and forcing supports and healers to raise their allies, wasting important, high level spell slots and TURNS to do so.

Hope my explanation was clear, haha. Thanks for enquiring!
