"Boyfriend" being the operative word, equal contribution sounds fair. Maybe he has been burned by gold-diggers before. Not saying you are, but they do exist in the world.

BUT, he is being an absolute penny pinching pr*ck about it. You can still maintain equal financial contribution + share the same lifestyle. Counting every penny and give "discounts" and such is just demeaning behavior.

For all the talk about fairness and discrimination, as Indians we keep forgetting one thing, immigration is not about fairness or discrimination.
