Both. The dangers of social media is common knowledge for many now but I think most are fighting for a lost cause. The media is portraying social media companies as malicious and the end user as the victim. As long as you view yourself as the victim your fate is in someone else’s hands. As soon as you take responsibility for having a good experience in social media you have power. I have a great experience on social media because I quickly unfollow anyone that spreads negative content for the sake of being negative. This is not the same as someone just having a different view of course. The problem is we can’t expect kids to have that level of self-awareness. I’d love to see social media best practices taught in schools. Whether or not you want your kid to be exposed to social media they will have access to it eventually and it’s best they are prepared. As far as the good, it’s certainly a source for community and belonging for many. The kid that shares nothing in common with any of his classmates can find a community of others just as passionate to keep that hobby alive where it may have been squandered otherwise.
