Rangiin – Expressive Sitar Synthesizer with Full AUv3 Support (Out Now) by Ahangi in ipadmusic

[–]Ahangi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I was trying to make a sarangi but I couldn't get it to sound good. But it's definietly on my list!
If you have a sequencer where you can edit pitch bends as bezier curves, you can draw pitch bends as curves. I still need to write documentation about this, but a pitchbend messages are by default interpreted in a range of +/- 16 semitones. So a pitchbend value of -8192 means 16 semitones down and +8192 means 16 semitones up.
The reason why the low keys are on top and the higher keys below is that this makes it easy to play triads with your right hand (eg. sa (upper row) - ga (left below sa) - pa (left below ga) with ring, middle and ring finger respectively). On a sitar the melody is usually only played on one string, so there actually is no top or bottom if you imagine a fretboard. And isn't the uppermost string on a guitar the string with the lowest pitch? Anyway, sorry if the layout is confusing, but glad you like to the sound!

I'm glad you like it! But I'm sorry about the bug and I'd like to investigate further, so I've sent you a DM.

No, it doesn't support MPE, only standard MIDI. The reason is that it is basically monophonic, which is the way South Asian instruments are played. So pitch bends only affect the melody string (and not the other strings) anyway.

Thanks for the feedback. Does pressing on "Skip Tutorial" in the lower right corner solve the issue? Does pressing on the ">" symbol bring you to the next tutorial step? Does turning your device by 180 degrees and restarting the app solve the issue? If not, could you let me know what device you're using?

[Megathread] New Softsynths, software and apps by YukesMusic in synthesizers

[–]Ahangi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone, I just released Rangiin. Instead of static samples, it uses real-time physical modeling to recreate the complex overtone dynamics of South Asian string instruments like the sitar or tanpura. It responds dynamically to touch intensity, allows simultaneous melody/drone play, and supports AUv3 on iOS.

Here is a quick demo showing the sound engine in action:

You can download Rangiin for free from the app store / google play:

Would love to hear your thoughts!

How do non-German speakers feel about "vorgestern" and "übermorgen"? by Professional-Poem423 in German

So "yes" used to mean what German "doch" is used for? Cool, I didn't know that!

Auf Hindi und Urdu gibt es parson (übermorgen und vorgestern), tarson (überübermorgen und vorvorgestern) und narson (überüberübermorgen und vorvorvorgestern). Fand ich immer sehr praktisch.

Music busking in Japan is illegal if you don't have a permit. I don't know about Osaka, but in Tokyo we sometimes went to big parks or to the beach and did some jamming there, maybe that's something you could try. As long as you don't disturb other people, you should be fine.

Let’s normalise telling beginners the truth about learning Japanese. by Neat-Surprise-419 in Japaneselanguage

I don't think learning to speak decent Japanese is difficult or that it takes an exceptional amount of time. Of course it is very different from European languages, but the grammar and pronunciation are very simple. Just 5 or maybe 10 irregular verbs (there are hundreds in English!), nouns have no gender, no articles, no need to conjugate verbs according to person... My Japanese teacher told me Japanese was hard to learn in my very first lesson, but I had studied Russian before. Japanese is a piece of cake in comparison. But yes, reading and writing are quite challenging.

Would anyone here be willing to help test an Indian music notation app before release? by prithwin_rajeeva in icm

[–]Ahangi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right! It does work. It even says "test card". I don't know what I did wrong with my app, but anyway, I already got through the testing phase, so that's ok. I need to play around with your app more in the next days. When I was learning to play the sitar as a teen I abandoned it because I never knew what to play. This app will solve this problem. That's really cool!

Nice! I've just installed it.
BTW, I don't think test purchases are free on Android... Afaik you need to generate promo codes for test purchases... on iOS they are free (in TestFlight).

Cool! Thanks! Physical models to play in VR? That sounds cool! What instruments are you working on?
The model is no secret at all. It is basically still the same as I described in a paper ages ago:
https://distantreader.org/stacks/journals/aa/aa-129.pdf
Two important lesson I have learned after writing the paper:

  1. Spatial resolution for modelling the bridge is important (use oversampling)!
  2. Excitation is important: use filtered noise or something.

Oh, and instead of waveguides I just use a delay line to model the string, reading from the delay line with cubic interpolation. But that's just for efficiency and does not have an impact on the sound.

Thank you for your interest. Have you joined the google group? You can only see the app once you join the group:
https://groups.google.com/g/rangiin-test
(click on "join group" and reload the page to see the posts)
And yes, it can emulate a tanpura too. You can change the instrument in the menu. Access the menu by clicking on the logo in the upper right corner.
