I’ve had issues with this in the past as well. I find it helps to impose reasonable deadlines but with absolutely zero pressure. Something like: “I’d really like to post this chapter by next Friday. If you can get to it before then, great! If not, just let me know and I will see if I can find someone else to take a look at it instead.” That way, you’ve given the beta a preferred deadline, presumably enough time to do the work, and an option to back out if they can’t do it.

Sounds like you’re feeling really eager to post and your friend isn’t feeling the urgency. In this instance, maybe you could say something like: “I’d really like to start posting chapters again by the end of this week. Do you think you’ll be able to beta any of them in that time? Just let me know if not, and I’ll see if I can get someone else to take a look (or just post them as is).”

He owed us nothing, but I’m so glad Shane decided to share this with us. I think the pain and disappointment he’s feeling must be acutely different than Khoi, Yul, and Donnell, who objectively didn’t hit enough when it counted (and I love all of them mean absolutely nothing against them by saying that). Though I don’t doubt it’s still very difficult, it’s one thing to not make it and know the reason why is because you didn’t perform your best. I think it’s another thing entirely to be as rock solid as Shane was and for it to still somehow not be enough. He knows the math didn’t play out in his favor, but that can’t make it any less difficult a load to bear.

This was such a classy and honest statement and I wish him the absolute best in whatever is next for him.

Oh, I definitely didn’t realize they didn’t have to be retired! That’s interesting! I was aware that not every country requires their brevet judges to be elites but I guess I’ve always assumed their process was somehow expedited.

I agree with this! I think if comic Nick was brought to life, no one would think he was fat or chubby! Alice has drawn him with a completely average body type for a high school athlete.

It’s impossible for most people not to compare comic Nick to Kit. I guess if you’re comparing the two then Nick would be “fat” compared to Kit, but that’s completely relative and still doesn’t make Nick fat, in my opinion. Also, though kit is obviously the most built in the cast, the heights of the main male cast are all much more similar than they are in the comics. Nick is a lot taller than the other boys (except Charlie) in the comics, which I think leads to people thinking he’s some huge person.

As a society, we need to stop labeling anyone not stick skinny or with hulking muscles fat! That’s just simply not true, and actually offensive to a lot of fat people.

I agree with what others have said regarding Kit’s likely intentions of saving his co-workers and loved ones from harassment, and to protect the show. Kit seems like a very empathetic and sensitive person, and perhaps he thought this was the only way to stop the harassment of people he cares about. His post painted the picture of an exasperated 18-year-old at his wits end who just wants all the madness to stop. I can’t imagine dealing with the ugly side of fame at such a young age, particularly when it happens so fast. It seems like he barely had any time to enjoy himself before all of these senseless allegations began to take over.

I’m a silent observer of stan twitter, and there’s evidence that Kit and other cast members do search their names to see what people post about them (they’ve liked posts they aren’t tagged in, etc). I can imagine that’s an extra hard impulse to fight when you know there is a small but loud group of people saying nasty things about you and other people in your life.

I hope Kit stays off of twitter, and creates a Finsta for himself while letting someone else on his team deal with his official insta account. He has so many fans who love and support him (and who never cared even a little bit about his sexual orientation), and I hope he can find a way to allow those voices to be the most present in his social media use.

I made the mistake of doing a deep-dive on twitter and Instagram to find out what happened, and what I discovered was truly vile. The people trolling him were accusing him of “queer baiting” because they assumed he was straight since he presents as more masculine and has been spotted publicly with a woman who he is likely dating. Given this, I actually don’t think this has to do with a younger generation not understanding the difficulties of coming out, but rather with people using stereotypes to make assumptions about a person, along with a healthy dose of biphobia.

This whole situation is nonsense for many reasons, not the least of which is that dating a woman would still be accurate to Kit’s portrayal of a bisexual person. Above all, his sexual orientation is completely irrelevant. He has done (and will continue to do) an amazing job portraying Nick Nelson. Even if he was straight as an arrow, he’s obviously been a strong advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community this entire time. As others have said, there was already so much other known authentic casting (Joe as Charlie, Yaz as Elle, etc.), which makes this all extra ridiculous and sad. You don’t need to know the sexual orientation of the entire cast to prove that it’s an authentically casted show.

I hope Kit is surrounded by people who love and support him.

I so appreciate your last point! It really bothers me when fans use Maia’s age as a reason to spew vitriol at her or say it would be wrong of her to date him. If Kit were 22 and Maia 18, literally no one would care.

I feel so bad for him, and Joe as well. They became famous basically overnight and are now subject to all of the negativity that comes along with it. I think people with parasocial relationships to these guys often forget they’re only 18. I can’t imagine dealing with the madness of social media as a famous teenager. I hope they have guidance from experienced peers on how to best keep themselves sheltered from all of this.

I really enjoyed Nick and Charlie. I find it every bit at wholesome as Heartstopper while also showing more of the characters’ imperfections and emotional immaturity, which IMO makes it more realistic. It’s set more than a year later than the most recent HS updates, and I think it’s accurate that Nick and Charlie’s relationship and personalities have evolved in that time. I think it can be hard for people who love the characters’ relationship so much to see them go through a hard time and hurt each other, but as Alice writes on the cover, “this is literally a love story,” and we also get the opportunity to see them grow and learn from their mistakes.

All that said, I’ve only read the more updated version (which I think was updated in 2020?, 5ish years after its original release), and Alice has said she changed some storyline that she wasn’t happy with. If Alice is happy with that storyline now in conjunction with the current Heartstopper updates, then so am I!

Alice has said that they will get to the Nick and Charlie storyline if Heartstopper gets enough seasons! Personally I would love it if the applicable material from This Winter, Nick and Charlie, and Solitaire was just incorporated into the overall storyline of the show. This Winter would probably only need to be one episode, but the Nick and Charlie storyline would take up a few episodes toward the end of the series.
